My sentiments exactly. He is as vanilla as they come. I'd love to hear what it is they see in him as a future senior player. If he is in the mix as a Maynard replacement, I shudder to think of our prospects going forward. The again, I had no faith in Ned Long up until two weeks ago.
Ryan has endurance, pace, intercepting ability, and dual sided, that's a great foundation on which to build to his development around. Not Vanilla at all compared to say DeMattia who lacks some of these foundations eg woefully one sided.
Ryan at around 190 he is also a good size

When you put it that way…

Perhaps I’m being unfair in calling Ryan vanilla. But I haven’t seen him put together the attributes you describe, in a way which makes him stand out. Sometimes we can have a blind spot for certain players.

I will pay more attention next time I’m at the VFL.

That’s the issue I see Vicky. His draft profile suggests all those traits. But I don’t see him strong 1v1 and if you aren’t strong 1 v 1 you need to be like leggy or noble and have an ability to break lines. I don’t see Ryan doing that even though he supposedly has good speed. Ball use I’d say most of his kicks are short chips. I’m not seeing an AFL quality HB atm. I emphasise atm because it appears Allan is finally displaying his speed. Perhaps Ryan can to, he has had a lot of injuries

Physical attributes don’t stop a player being vanilla. So far Ryan has yet to put anything substantial together that makes him look anywhere near up to the level, he has no outstanding attribute that elevates him above others, his ball use is slow safe in a team where it’s a priority to attack fast from the position he plays.

He’s a classic “has the tools but doesn’t use them” type.

He's a good athlete who reads it well, but plays too safe. Doesn't confidently commit to anything. Who knows if that changes?

.
Endurance, above average pace, and being dual sided elevate him above others.
He debuted in his first season as proof of his potential, and then concussion proved to be a huge set back.
"Having the tools" is the the first step in a foundation on which to build his game.
Much like Allan who has also been a slow burn with "tools".

If we aren't going to persist with players who have "tools" then who are we going to persist with?

I thought Cochran had more than a few good moments
For mine , he’s our most impressive draftee
Then West (it’s bizarre that Collingwood has a KPF coming through)
Then Hayes (needs to act quicker but be more measured once he takes possession)
Would have been a big game for him - up against the team that rejected him and players that were preferred to him. Good character shown to perform well in that situation.

I'd persist with him too. He's a medium defender who needs to add strength - might see a more purposeful footballer if that comes - at the moment he looks a fair way off as nothing is done with genuine intent.

A debut isn’t proof of anything, lots of players debut and then never play another game. You’re just listing basic things, none of that gives him a point of difference that elevates him above anyone else.

Having the tools gets you drafted, using them properly is what propels you to a genuine afl career. It’s beginning to become clear that Ryan can’t use his properly, unlike Allan, who even from early on was showing glimpses of AFL level play but wasn’t putting it together consistently.

Stop listing his tools and start giving me some evidence that he’s actually capable of AFL level play if you want to convince me. All you’re doing at the moment is saying things you could say about almost any player in the comp.

You’ve acknowledged he’s got tools but doesn’t use them.
I’ve then responded, that if you’re not going to persist with players with the tools then who should you persist with?

Clearly my logic is sound.

Now, if you chose to believe he’ll never make it despite the tools then that’s your choice.

I’m obviously of the contrary opinion.

Literally every player on the list “has the tools” to some extent, so by your logic we should persist with every player and never delist anyone, which is obviously ridiculous and impossible, so no your logic is terrible.

Which players do we persist with? The ones who actually perform well and show in their performances that they can actually do things that will translate well at AFL level to our playstyle.

I’m still waiting to hear what he’s actually done or is doing at VFL level that’s making him worth persisting with once his deal expires, and you’re yet to list anything outside of the basic attributes he was drafted on, so 🤷🏻

I thought Ryan looked to be getting back to his first year form. Did some nice things. Strong overhead. Minus some shaky moments, uses the ball well. Hopefully he can keep building.
I reckon he's going allright too. But it seems you have to be all in or all out on our kids.

I thought he was ok but just can’t see anything about what he does that screams AFL level, which concerns me for a 3rd year player.
