I think Smit's more of a chance as a ruck as he looks like he'll have a bigger body and be more aggressive.Steene's still only 21, while Smit is 19, so both should have plenty of time on their hands to develop.

His aggression was what made him so impressive from the start last year, especially as he was pretty much still a junior. Interestingly enough, he's only 200cm, but I think the club will be very keen on both of them.I think Smit's more of a chance as a ruck as he looks like he'll have a bigger body and be more aggressive.
Was fairly quiet, but I think the commentators got his named mixed up a few times lolDid anyone notice much of Josh Browne during yesterday's game? He's come to us with a reasonable reputation, so I was expecting to see a fair bit from him. Maybe I wasn't watching as closely as I needed to, but I was hardly aware he was there, and I don't recall the commentators saying his name all that often (perhaps they didn't know who he was!). The statistics say the majority of his disposals were handballs, so maybe that's why he didn't really stand out to me:

Interesting, I kinda see it the other way roundThey see Steene as the first ruck, with smit the forward/ruck.
He just seems to lack any outstanding attributes. If Ryan had a the pace to match his great endurance he'd have played more games. The whole reason he plays it so safe is he doesn't have the acceleration, therefore the condifence to break the lines. It governs his entire game. No idea how people can watch him and think hes quick. Maye the flowing hair makes him look faster, i dunno.
We're a fair way away from either of them being AFL relevant. They see Steene as the first ruck, with smit the forward/ruck.
Need to be realistic with these two Jen, one an SSP and one a MSD. If one of them come along we’ve done amazingthey are developing, but showing good signs.
That Gold Coast practice half where GC rolled out 4 different rucks that he couldn't physically compete with has me very skeptical on Steene's ability to develop into a first ruck at AFL level. I think they need to target a different roll for him.they are developing, but showing good signs.
need to be a competitive beast like Briggs at that height to compete with the other rucks. That Gold Coast practice half where GC rolled out 4 different rucks that he couldn't physically compete with has me very skeptical on Steene's ability to develop into a first ruck at AFL level. Or the Saints guy, Darcy or even Tom Hawkins. You've got to be strong enough to push these taller blokes away from the ball drop or they'll outreach you.need to be a competitive beast like Briggs at that height to compete with the other rucks.
You “Don’t get that with Ryan” - that’s fine. I don’t get that with Parker as a possible Howe/ Murphy role interceptor. All you’re doing here is repeating yourself, listing the attributes he was drafted on. Those don’t put him ahead of anyone they just get his foot in the door. I’m asking what he’s actually done at VFL level or doing that elevates him ahead of guys like Jiath, or Parker? He’s not even ahead of those guys, there’s no “gap” between him and them. So who in this “pack” so to speak, is he actually ahead of?
Parker was given multiple games in his first year coming off no preseason and 3 years out of the game. TJ was also given a game last year, although he clearly wasn’t ready, as Ryan wasn’t in his first year either (imo).
Yes I’m absolutely a doubter. I’ve seen bits of play from both TJ and Parker (Parker in particular) that make me think “yeah that will translate well to AFL level”. Parker has already shown he’s almost there in his games late last year and in the preseason.
TJ I look at and see glimpses of things like closing speed, marking and defensive intercept work that make me sit up and go “wow that was impressive.”
I don’t get that from Ryan. His intercept game is decent without being outstanding, and his ball use is slow and safe. I barely see any of the “dashing run and carry” that was said about him in his draft year. That’s why I keep asking what it is that puts him ahead but you just keep parroting his basic attributes that got him drafted instead of giving me a real answer…
Really hope this kid succeeds, just has to keep turning up and putting up strong performances.Ryan was very good yesterday. I'm quite impressed with his development from last year

If you don't know his story look up a bloke called "Carlos Kaiser". Played for a lot of professional soccer teams on good coin but never played a game. Maybe this is the way to get recruited. That’s what Marketing is for.
Recruit me, and I’ll be the biggest draft story ever for its surprise and unlikeliness. And I won’t disappoint, because no way anybody will ever let me anywhere near a footy field to prove the doubters wrong.
True story: when I was in my young 20’s I was looking for a team to play scratch basketball with. I called up my local basketball centre (the old Albert Park centre) and asked how I’d go about getting a game?
The person on the end of the phone clearly didn’t understand the assignment, because he said “Come down on a Wednesday evening and Lindsey Gaze will give you a tryout”![]()
MSD?
Either they are physical brutes or athletically gifted like De Koning.Rucks are getting taller. I think the good ones of his height are physical brutes.
And De Koning has height on him anyway.Either they are physical brutes or athletically gifted like De Koning.
T. De Koning (vs Steene)? The Carlton website has him at 201cm, and he's listed in 2025 AFL publications at that height. That's 201 vs 202 cm, so a slight edge to our youngster! We know those figures can be a bit dodgy, but Steene is tall enough to be an AFL ruckman, and can make it if he develops well enough. He's only 21, compared to the Blues man's 25.And De Koning has height on him anyway.

PS If you're talking about S. De Koning please ignore most of what I've just said!
