Could Murphy have kicked that goal? Yes

Would Murphy had kicked that goal? 100% No

Bloke is an absolute legend for staying down for the count
He will be a bigger legend if he is fine to play this week.

The lols on the Port board would be worth it.

Quite a bit has been said about this. I wouldn't be so sure.

I couldn't find Murphy's set shot that goaled from a similar angle and distance but at the southern end, but this one's a gem.

(have to scroll down to it)

Edit: This one would have done it. around the 2:07 mark

There are quite a few players who are capable of kicking it... but only a few who would do so consistently. Murphy could kick it, but probably wouldn't.

I get where nicks is coming from. Dawson misses it and what have we learnt? Not a lot. We did everything we could to win the game. He kicks it, bliss.

What I dont get is Hinkley laughing before the kick. A miss and his season might still be on life support. Miss, and his job is gone. Does he care?

I think that was ironical laughter from Hinkley. Along the lives of, “can you ducking believe it, ducking Dawson gets the ball”.

If you really want to stop it being used as a tactical weapon less so, the player being subbed off has to "automatically" miss the following week.

The issue this creates is that it could lead to injured players being kept on the field, causing further injury. You don't want to create fear of removing an injured player on the basis that the injury might not be that bad, and they'll miss the next week. Conservative approach with injuries seems to be the approach.

Saw on FB a sponsored podcast from Neds which had Rockliff and some other dude talking about Port Adelaide.

Rockliff comments that Sydney in 2016 lost the first 6 games but went on to make the GF. Rockliff reckons that Port can still make the GF from this 0-3 start.

Now the facts -
  • it was 2017 not 2016, Sydney did make finals winning 14 of their last 16 games but lost in the semifinal week
  • Hinkley is not Longmire
  • Dixon is not Franklin (we can do this scenario with the whole list)
  • you can’t make a GF with the benefit of two home preliminary finals, it ain’t going to happen if you have to play away each week in cut throat death finals

They have got to keep the dream alive somehow

Not to mention pointing to an absolute outlier and anomaly that occurred half a decade ago, does not mean that it will happen to you.

Agree. I didn't have a problem with it. My immediate thought was that he was a laugh/smile of bemusement too.

Anyone making a big deal out of it or taking it as a sign of anything else is just hunting for things to talk about.

Looking back, here is the list of players at our Club who I genuinely believe could have nailed that kick there is probably at best 5.

Tex, Smith, Seedsman, Rachele, TT and of course Dawson.
IIRC there was another Crows player who kicked a goal from a similar position earlier in the game? Or was that Rachele?

Fogarty definitely could have kicked it, if his head weren't completely scrambled. Fog of 2018 to early 2020 would be odds on to kick it, Fog of 2021 not so much.
Re-writing history a bit there… 2021 fog was bloody good infront of goals..

Its 2022 kicking for goal fog thats the concern..

Is it bad that I'm so gleefully anticipating the demise of Port this season? It is giving me such enjoyment to see them fall away.

Does that make me a bad person that I'm enjoying someone else's disappointment?

I kinda see this as laughing when you see someone hit in the balls, and not laughing that your rival has broken a leg and now you get to take their place.

What's everyone's take on this?

Yeah... my bad. I meant Fog of 2022 as the inaccurate kicker, though I would note that his inaccuracy started in the second half of 2021. From R18-23 of 2021 he kicked 9.8, which was when the yips started.

It will be funnier if they finish mid-table.

That way they will just brush it off as bad luck. Like us in 2018.

That's where I want them. As funny as it would be, a bottom 4 finish for Port would be a catalyst for change. I'd prefer mid-table, good enough to trick themselves into thinking they're still a contender, and they'll also get a mediocre draft pick.

Making the finals in 8th position to trigger a Ken Hinkley contract extension, then getting smashed first week
