Look at his eyes. He's not even bothering to look down the line, hence is his confidence in his kicking ability. This shit wins games. I don't care if he doesn't rack up 20+ yet, one kick like that is worth 5 cheapies.

Definitely love to model off peak Hawks. They used to get you the same way.

I still like to think I was the first to notice how good Paton was in his first couple of games. I'm certainly not bagging him, he's one of my favourites. A real no frills super disciplined black boots type operator. He's my type of player, he wasn't born with piles of talent but his work rate and drive have him in the first picked list every week.

He played like a 200 gamer from day one, this is the first time I've ever seen anything like a form slump from him. I must admit my expectations of him are so high that I expected him to come back from a broken leg like he'd never left the side though. He's just so stable usually. He's like a robot most of the time, he's a guy you never worry about.
I think he has more talent than that implies. Great mover, left and right foot kicking. He’s just a bit off.

Ryder wins Ruck and kicks 2 goals in literally his last match 7 days ago, far out and I thought my memory was shit

Rule number one of football is that anything that happened beyond the last game is irrelevant.

A week ago Ryder was our most important player and our win probability falls dramatically with him out. Now Marshall plays better as the number one ruck so we should forget Ryder. The thing is, Ryder is our best ruckman and Marshall plays his best when he is the main ruck.

This rule is also relevant to the discussion about Billings and Clark - I think a few forget how good those are when they’re up and going.

I'm finally watching the game, in the first quarter still but Hayes is just a great competitor. He's not a pretty footballer but he's a competitor and a natural reader of the play, he reminds me of one of those guys that plays in the bush where he's the best player in a league and everyone wonders if he could have made the big time. He's still got a bit of the agricultural about him but besides the lack of polish he's still a very good footballer. Does a lot of the team stuff as well.

Seb Ross is a much much better player all of a sudden when back on ball. Snags is very unusual player, he's kind of pudgy and a bit slow but can sneak a goal if there is even the slightest chance but also plays like Stevie J type of smaller lead up type. He's a match up nightmare, probably closest to a Papley.

McKenzie and Sinclair have both stepped up to be very confident and skilled players.

I said something very similar to old man during the game.

Reminds me of watching a suburban football match and you can tell he is the best bloke on the ground. Does all the dirty shitty stuff that helps others excel and then takes the mark and kicks the goal when it’s his turn.

No glitz no glamour. Just pure love of the game.

Shit second quarter from the Saints. We probably need a bit more killer instinct where we punish sides rather than coast. Suns are a decent side but we looked disinterested at times in quarter 2.

Watch Hayes and the very last play of the day. His reaction tells you everything you need to know about the competitor he is.

The SANFL where he is BoG with a fractured leg was EXACTLY the same, yes he was more dominant as it was a lesser league but his playing style is not one of a millionairre, and jut does the stuff that others benefit from. He is easily good enough for AFL and more than one team, it's not like he got a gig at North, he is playing good football in a team in the top four.

His influence can't be measured, a true utility that makes it hard for the opposition to match up on when he goes forward, having Skunk and King down there with another tough matchup in Higgins running about. Has a good lead and good game sense, can ruck a bit, and has very good skills in and under. Really adds to the flexibility of the team in general.

Was looking at the games played for each club side this week and we've fielded the 4th or 5th least experienced side. Not sure if the Hawk will play a less experienced side as I can't be bothered working out the average. Promising signs with a relatively inexperienced side with a few key outs

This is ages but we've been the sixth oldest I think

The vision; the execution. So beautiful to watch.

The third kick in that chain from Gresham was pretty solid too.

100 years and lots has changed and nothings changed. Good kicking is good football.

Just finished the third quarter. That was a stalemate quarter and Hayes goes back and sets up a few plays off HB, then goes into the ruck and grapples and scraps with Witts and Casboult and breaks at least even with Witts and easily takes care of Levi. He gets hands in and taps on and stands in the way and blocks and munts things our way. Then marks and converse if they don't pay him respect. I love him, he's like the Little Engine That Could or something, he's not much different in height to Steele when they're side by side. Just wills himself to be in things. You'd love playing with him.

Long good in that one too. He hunts like a hungry velociraptor. You'd stay away if he was around your area.

Paton looks fine to my eye… if we can forgive a few brain fades from Seb Ross after 10 years and 150+ games, I'll do the same for Paton who has not even played 50 yet.

Bloke is a gun.

He's looked okay so far.

Interesting hearing King say yesterday that he has gone from 88kg when he first got to the Saints, to 95kg now. Given he's had four pre seasons of lifting weights, it's not a massive increase. Love that they are prioritising his athleticism and not getting sucked in to make him as big as possible, as quick as possible. Daniher is only listed as 97kg and I don't see a need for King to be much bigger than that.

2020 we seemed to kick mark but most were shorter kicks. Having him and Lienert in gives us a couple of deep penetrating lasers. It's a weapon. Gresham is the opposite, you don't know what he'll do, he creates chaos and pressure through frenetic movement and unpredictable kicks. It's a nice balance. Precision and mayhem.
Milera is a weapon because he try’s to hit targets. Lienart is just a bigger savage. We can do without that type of he is replaced by a play maker. And from what I’ve seen even though he is tall he doesn’t seem a great defender
