Autopsy Round 5, 2022: St.Kilda v Gold Coast

I think his broken leg was a very bad break. We had a player years ago who never played again after breaking his leg.
Totally agree , was just saying debilitating was not the best way to describe it

That second NWM kick is better then the first. The weight to drop that behind the defenders for wood but to punch it through the air to not allow it to be read off boot is unreal.

The first one is also great kicking. You can’t defend kicks like that when they punch through your zone like a hot knife through butter.
Someone post s gif of his first kick. He did an insane step/Baulk before kicking I think to wood.

Last week he made a couple of critical errors which he'd never done before and that footage of him marking and the choosing a poor option where he handballs into the guy standing the mark looked nothing like the stable player we've come to expect. I can't remember him making mistakes before this year. Hopefully it's just building back up from a pretty debilitating injury.
I’ve seen Steele, Wood, Roma, hill Gresh and others do the exact same thing. Think it’s a cos gong directive more then anything else.

I find it funny that the media has only just caught on to Sinclair, he has been one of our best and most consistent players for a couple of years now. Being around the ball more this year will naturally up some of his numbers but he was having great impact on our side before this year.

I don't mind that it's taken the media and a few others a little while to finally understand how brilliant he has been for us.

You liked savage so it seems you like players who seem to have one huge asset and that’s kicking long. Like savage clubs will start playing an attacking player on lienart. I have as second replaced at the moment behind windhanger.

I wasn't a huge fan of Savage, just thought that he was unfairly targeted and that we should have kept him as depth. Lienert is not a set in stone best 22 player but he adds something different to what we have now. We are trying to use the ball faster and break lines and he can do that.

That HBF role often sees guns underrated. Rory Laird was a star for years and people hardly know who he is outside of Adelaide.

Lienert is an average footballer. Not sure the big kick on him is always used to maximum effect by him.

I would love if we had Coffield injury free and back to his 2020 best.

I agree, if Coff could get back to 2020 form he's a gun. Probably 12+ months away from that still by the time he gets back, builds up and trusts his knee again. Right now the defensive unit looks okay and Lino's got parts of his game that help the unit.

After the game, Jack Higgins was asked about the turnaround in form this year, and he said it was due to a strong pre season and a good defence coach coming in. Is that a dig at Hamill?
Not deliberately, but it says he obviously rates what Enright is doing higher than what he was able to do

And as well as the Blues are going, they are still having big scores kicked against them

It's hard to know how good or bad assistants are but I'm glad we went for someone else

To be fair, even last year it took him to nearly half way to really get going

From round 10 onwards he has been elite

So he hasn't really been an absolute gun for a full season yet

Seems to be getting better every week though

He'd have to be the most in form half back in the comp right now

Apparently he is mid yet hasn’t attended a centre bounce for the last 2 games.

Elite is a different story but he's been one of our best for a few years now, super consistent. Maybe he wasn't getting the credit he deserved because we've been out of the finals and/or not really a good side but gee he has gone under the radar.

I'd say he's a half back that runs through the midfield

Up until last week he spent almost half his time in the midfield according to the telecast.

Seeks like we prefer him off half back though and will just use him there when needed

It will probably be even less so when Jones and Clark return but it's handy to have up our sleeve

It was nearly half way through the 2020 season before he was able to get a game

As good as he was he was just a role player that year

The move to a permanent half back has totally changed his career

Sitting down to watch Geel v Haw on Easter Monday and asking why this is a highlighted game. Very likely to be a blowout. Surely the AFL should be more thoughtful about scheduling and dump this outdated 1980s rivalry. Don’t we think a Melb v Geel or us would be a better game. The teams playing well should be rewarded for good form. The Geel vHW rivalry is over.

Us? Why would they thought of us in round 5 this year. Lucky to get Friday night next week and round one this year.

They started the tradition. It's a great rivalry and is always going to draw attention.

No issue with it.

I've always said we should be trying to do something in the indigenous rounds

There's an opening on the Friday night. We should try and get a big club like Collingwood on board, call it the reconciliation game

There's a big history there around that and Collingwood are telling us all they want to "do better"

I get your point but there's a bit more to it than simply 1980's rivalry. For about a 10 year period the Geelong v Hawks games were always must watch games, it's hardly a gift for them to have Easter Monday.

He had played 59 games in the 3 years before that. He has gone up another gear since 2020 but I always rated him, think he's a terrific and smart footballer, rarely makes a bad decision.

Hawthorn and Geelong has been a good rivalry all the way through. I guess that's what is good about tradition, these rivalries would mean nothing if they were moved off primetime as soon as there's a blowout (which historically hasn't been the case between the Cats & Hawks).

Not sure how the game started for you to say it's likely a blowout but it's only 15 points right now.
