I think there's a few answers. I can imagine that over the longer term some do move either out that way or over that side of town a bit more.

While there is travel, the times of day the players will be heading out there will be largely against traffic as it comes in to the city in the morning and out in the afternoon so it won't be as variable as you may think. Northside players may be a bit of an exception pending where on the northside you live. So I think coorparoo area remains still available for those who want to and it does open up other options to players. Sherwood, graceville, toowong, indooroopilly, kenmore, mount ommaney etc etc. You've got a lot more options on where you live based on where you are in life.

As for the time to commute I think it will also even out on total commute time in the week. At the moment players spend large chunks of the day travelling all over the southside of brisbane to and from and parking, especially roudn the gabba is a nightmare. They're travelling at least an hour a day, its just a different type of travel.

So there will be a difference in how they operate. Players who live innner brisbane will most likely change from lots of small trips in a day and being able to go back home in between, to driving out to the club to start the day and staying there. Now the facilities around player comfort and areas have been designed for this and theres a massive shopping centre just across the road if they want to go elsewhere so they won't be sitting around doing nothing.

It will be an adjustment but I'm not super worried about it. TBH i'd say the women will have the hardest time especially if they're training in the afternoon/evenings. That drive out there at that time is not kind. If i was them i'd be parking at a train stop a few stops away and hopping on the train for the last bit of the trip.
Beat me to it, but your response was much more , well better.

It's also worth remembering that they're only in at the club roughly three days a week, and only for 9-10 months of the year. Games will still be at the Gabba, as will Captains Run training sessions on the weeks of home games.

If it were a normal 9-5, 48 weeks of the year kind of job, you would definitely move closer. But I'm not sure players will deem it necessary under those conditions.

Maybe they can get a team bus and pick up all the players :)

I only drove past the site last week. Didn't realise how far away it was. I live Brisbane northside now, and if any games are scheduled there during the Gabba rebuild, its going to be a nightmare to get there, probably more-so trying to get home.

Also begs the question, what are the players going to do in future? From what I can gather now, they all live fairly close proximity to the Gabba/Cooparoo area (Bulimba, Wynnum). There's obviously no team rule that says you have to live close the ground/training venue and I believe both Zorks and Smokin Joe do live Northside. The commute Gabba - M Voss oval is 30km, but Brisbane traffic can make that vary from 30mins to 2 hrs.
Will their be a gradual migration of the players over the next 10yrs from inner city Brisbane southside to Springfield?

The Redcliffe line connect's directly to Springfield so it would be a train there and back if you're on the Northside. A bad trip at all and much better than Metricon.

I'm on Ferny Grove line, so would require a change somewhere b/t Bowen Hills and Roma St. Its probably more the getting home biy. There doesn't appear to be any holding sidings at Springfield Central station, so how many Northbound trains would they be able to hold there at the end of the game trying to get 5000+ fans home. Packing everyone in like sardines is a thing of the past ...............

(just putting on my duffle coat and going back in time)

..... ummmmmmmmm jam donuts! That's something I can't recall seeing at the Gabba, hot Jam donuts. One my fondest childhood memories is getting half dozen hot jam (so hot it gives you third degree burns) donuts walking out of Princess Park with my dad and squeezing onto the W class tram on Royal Parade back into town. Everyone squeezed in, and smell of hot jam donuts, mixed with damp duffle coats and the old bloke who had a few too many tinnies

I hadn't really thought of it that way. Probably more in the preseason, I'd imagine but, yeah, if you play games and have a captain's run elsewhere, then really we're not talking about day in, day out commuting.

I'm also Northside and I'm resigning myself to the possibility that I won't be attending as many games during the Gabba rebuild. Not being critical at all - it's the reality that there will be disruption.

I'll still pay my membership fees but I just can't see myself catching a bus and two trains to go to the footy at Springfield - just put the journey into the TransLink app then and it's 2 hours door to door, one way. Driving is definitely better (45 min currently, according to Google maps) and not much different to going to the Gabba so that will be what we end up doing, I suspect. Just means having to sort out parking, designated drivers etc.

As long as we avoid playing at Metricon, I think I can live with whatever short term solution they come up with. I hate the idea of playing out of the Gold Coast.

They sold them at the ground level outlet on the Stanley Street side the last time I checked - which was about 8 years ago, admittedly.

I do wonder if it changes the flow of the week a bit. I've got no idea what their schedule is like but i would imagine that you're probably less likely to schedule in some sort of session on the same day as a captains run at the gabba (maybe there's no sessions anyway) although I guess we would still have access to under the gabba on those days pre and post captains run so could still run meetings etc. When the gabba isn't there then we're probably doing it at springfield anyway so moot point then.

Seems i've just talked myself in and out of an point while writing this, but i've put too much effort in now so you can all read it too.

I guess we probably make sacrifices to our scheduling now to fit in with venue availability. Our own venue gives us the chance to really plan it out how we want it with fewer compromises such as staggered gym sessions etc. Probably streamlines our use of coaching and fitness staff resources too having everyone in at the same time for things or our choice how to stagger them if we want. Easy for players too to go straight from a gym session to do some touch work out in the indoor area under fatigue or vice versa. thinking about it more and more the benefits of having a one stop shop over all the different spots we go now and the limitations space wise on them is actually immense. We would have to make so many more sacrifices and workarounds.

I mean i've driven past the gabba before and spotted players doing some touch work out in the park out the front near the cricket nets. Now it may have been a very one off, buts its indicative of the compromises we do have to make in our current space.

They just need faster cars.

Reminds me of going to concerts at Boondall. No special trains, just regular 30 minute services. Disgusting and sweaty, sweaty, sweaty... Much easier to drive and park in surrounding streets.

I'm pretty sure there was vigorous debate at one point in time as to whether dim sims or hot jam donuts were the ideal footy food on a cold night. I'm not sure a consensus was reached.

What dim sims are we talking about? South Melbourne market dim sims win every time (1 fried, 1 steamed, with plenty of soy sauce).

Unfortunately now, the tradition I've started now with my kids is getting Macca's at Central station before getting on the bus to the Gabba, and then getting a hot chocolate on the way home.

I’m not sure why there needed to be any debate at all.

Surely in the middle of winter you need the molten heat of dim sims and jam donuts to get you through.

Why compromise???

A few have commented on this already and it has been a topic of conversation over the last few years. Imho it will be a bit of a gradual thing, but I see there being a decent chance quite a few guys end up over in that Indro, Toowong, St Lucia and area. They are fairly desirable places to live and have good access to cafes, cinemas, gyms, universities, golf courses and a bit of the more low key nightlife (The Regatta, R.E and Indooroopilly Hotels). I also think some of the more mature players/ golf addicts with young families and some of the coaching staff might consider joining Ash Barty and living on the Brookwater Golf Course. Might even be some who look at an acreage option out that way. But like I mentioned, I doubt players will move on mass immediately. They seem pretty settled in that Bulimba area.

In regards the naming of the 'Brunswick St' style grandstand at Voss oval, how about the R Merrett stand?
The Grandstand at Brunswick St. was renamed the Fitzroy Grandstand in 2006. As paying homage to that Grandstand why not call it The Fitzroy Grandstand also? If not at least name it after a Fitzroy legend.

How about the Starcevich Stand. Inaugural and Premiership coach and player. Has done so much for our amazing women and Qld women

And he has managed to create an environment that has kept the team together. A massive thing in the face of expansion.

So he is very people oriented, and the stand us for lots of people. I know that reads weird, but I hope communicates the idea.

I get where you're coming from but calling something in Qld after something that is specifically Victorian is a No from me. Anything named at Springfield should come from the Brisbane Lions (or even the Bears since they were a Qld team) not the Fitzroy Lions.
