Great first 3 quarters with a real even spread, team defence worked for the first time in a long time, they couldn't get through from half back and wing at all first half.

Last quarter was on par with 1st quarter last week, horrendous, disappointing when we were so good earlier.

Loved buku playing the intercept role we have been missing. West's attack all night was relentless. Thought jj played really well early too. Bont was a class above.

Should get naughty, Hunter and hopefully caleb back, some big ins v dees. It's in our hands.

McNeil's best game for the club imo. He is worth persisting with on the wing.

Garcia also played his best game so far. We have a bit of talent on the list.
Loving having West, Cody and now Garcia around the ball in the front half - just gives us that extra fight around the ball. Far cry from the likes of Scott & McComb rounding out those positions.

Surely Sweet & Tim both stay for the Gawn/Jackson match up - not sure how we fit Naughty, Bruce & Jamarra in though as Jamarra holds his place for the rest of the year and I think we’re best with the two genuine talls and English/Sweet.

Would be so helpful if Bruce could genuinely go to FB and just be a big body who won’t get beaten - let Keath play CHB with Buku 3rd tall. Just not sure Bruce can play back though but geez wouldn’t be the worst idea to trial it for a month considering our season is still shot - and who knows it might just fix some issues.

I don’t care what anyone says, I don’t care if Sweet has zero touches - our midfield needs to dominate for us to win and giving them two genuine ruckman at all times is giving us the best shot at that. I really couldn’t care less if Sweet plays 40% game time all in the ruck it’s worth it over an extra small. Until Darcy’s ready to take over that 2nd ruck which hopefully is sooner rather than later that’s our best set up, no one thinks it’s great but it’s better than the alternative

What is your problem? You’ve been on a dinosaur rant all night, all the “Sweet lovers” were justified in tonight’s game that we remained competitive in the ruck all game, especially with English being down on form.

Either shut up, or actually contribute something to this board.
I’m pretty sure it’s @Foxman98s alt tbh 😂

Sweets tap work is sublime at times.

English in the middle is a disaster.

On top of that Sam Darcy is 205cm and growing. Obviously going to be a ruckman.

Not sure what happens if we get Lobb
Lobb for a couple of years until Darcy’s really ready to take over in a big way would be a big upgrade on Sweet.
Just not sure where it leaves Naughty, Bruce & Jamarra - Jamarra really needs to just stay in and play every game now. But I really want to leave Naughty forward… it would solve a lot of issues for Naughty to go back though… **** knows what to do, I definitely don’t.

Would be ideal if Darcy could play CHB for 3 years

Sweet was shit tonight.

Not sure what justification you’re talking about.

What was with the first 2 (maybe 3) saints goals from soft free kicks, and that play on call from Keefs mark? The ump NUMBER 14 (yes, I won't forget) copped a barrage from me from that one.

That free Hill got was criminal.

Tried to step around our forward (can’t remember who), cornered and caught. Then ducked his head hoping for the soft bail out free.

Terrible by the umpire- led to Steelers goal at the other end, when he was paid a mark when it was obviously touched. Umpiring was poor tonight.

Hard to get terribly enthused about that. We put the cue in the rack 5 minutes into the third quarter. Nobody is under any illusion that sort of showing will be good enough to challenge Melbourne. However consider these as positives:
  • Bruce was way off the pace tonight. He didn't stop trying but it wasn't hard for us to work out which player hadn't played senior footy for a year. And hadn't played in the same forward line with most of those boys for the same length of time. He will be improved for the run (if he pulled up OK) and will be better next week, especially when the tall defenders have more than just him to worry about.
  • English was also way off. He still got a lot of taps (something Bevo was keen to point out) but he spilled easy marks, fumbled bouncing balls and didn't look switched on most of the night. His value to us in the past has mostly been his work around the ground and he gave us almost nothing there tonight. Ironic that it was his ruckwork that served us best in this game. I'm not as sure English will be better next week as I am that Bruce will be, but third game back it would be a reasonable expectation.
  • Bailey Smith looked keen but pretty rusty after 4-5 weeks off. He admitted he was unusually nervous. He could have had a brilliant game but his delivery into the 50 was atrocious. He will give us much better service next week.
  • Treloar was back where he needed to be and seemed happier for it.
  • Bont was in a class of his own tonight. If that's a sign that he has found some relief from his injury problems (hip?) then it'll be worth going to games just to watch him in full flight. Hopefully he can turn that sort of touch and dominance on again next week.
  • Naughton, Schache and Hunter should all be available next week. Let's hope they have only had light doses of covid. Whether they all play is an unknown. I'd like to see Naughton play further up the field where he can play as a high marking transition player with ground skills almost as good as a midfielder, but able to drift inside 50 for scoring opportunities. He's a scary prospect for opponents when in full flight. Not unlike the Dermot Brereton role in the 80s and early 90s. Bruce deep forward and JUH floating around mostly inside 50.
  • Daniel could be available next week. If not, then the week after.
  • Jamarra finally put some of his good work onto the scoreboard tonight. He did attack the ball too hard at times which meant he ran under the ball. It looked to me like the action of a player still not at full confidence. Armchair shrink that I am, I reckon he will better if he can put the anxiety of other people's expectations to one side and just stay in the moment, treating every incoming ball on its merits. He will start clunking a whole lot more marks, especially those ones that come in quickly - not so much the high ball that Astro specialises in. Watch out when he starts to realise how all this works. JUH doing that with his pace, leap and mobility. Bruce being a bull at deep forward. Naughton creating carnage on the arc.

I though Sweet was pretty abysmal tonight. His tap work is okay but he’s shit at pretty much every other facet. I would much prefer to give Darcy a go in that role but Naughts will come in for him next week.

Bruce was so far off it, it wasn’t funny. Still good to get another injury free game into him whilst picking up a win. It’s going to take a lot of time for the big man and likely not this season.

1st off congratulations on the win dogs.

Also.... I enjoy the dogs smashing the saints at docklands. For one reason and one reason only.

It's only because in a game day thread, there is a certain saints fan that always complaining about the umpires. Dogs dominated the 1st 3 quarters. Let the gas off in the final quarter but got home.

I enjoyed last season's dogs vs saints game, simply because the dogs won with supreme skill.

Marcus bontempelli is one of my favourite non Freo players.

Loved Bonts goal in the 2nd quarter. Took one step kicks it from 55 metres out and nails a goal with ease. Amazing stuff.

Mofra I enjoy your antics on bay 13 lol.

Dogs season isnt over yet.

And just like dogs in 2016 and 2021, I won't be surprised with the dogs creating havoc outside the top 4 again.

Darcy is (wait for it) currently 208cm. He’s grown nearly 5cm since being drafted..
Going to be a ruck- let’s face it.

Not sure where English is going to play.
Good problem to have - I want to banish the frustration of watching many years of undersized Bulldogs teams being out marked time and time again.

Ironic that English looked aggressive and strong in the ruck contests. Beat both Ryder and Marshall in there. Then just strolled around like he's mind was elsewhere around the ground.

Has to be one or the other for him? Can't do both?

Some good additions to the defence - Buku, Treloar and even Hannan and with Richard’s pace and interceptions, thought we looked good for three quarters. Daniel to move up the field and fix some of those appalling final kicks into the f50. Busy bees tired in the last but the hard chasing of the inexperienced trio of West, Garcia and McNeil put pressure on their defence. Weightman still recovering from his elbow injury.
We should have been much further ahead before the last but a dozen or so rubbish balls into f50 was pathetic.

It's going to be a good day when somebody finds the switch for Bailey Williams. He definitely seems more suited to playing up the ground than deep in defence but at the moment he is clumsy and unimaginative. Every possession seems laboured. I'm convinced he has another level (like Dale and Richards have gone to) but we just haven't been seeing it.

Anyone got any ideas how to unlock it? Confidence has to be part of it. Maybe just giving him consistent time on the wing would do it. Unfortunately getting consistent time in one role is hard for anyone who Bevo has decided is an all-purpose utility.
