We seem to win a lot of the centre bounces when he is in there.

60% tonight against two of the best rucks going around.

Maybe we should bring back Cordy or Buku rucking?

Our mids are in the business of winning clearances regardless of who’s rucking. It’s been done to death, we don’t need to go over it again

Sweet offers less on the field than just about any player on any list in the comp at the moment and tonight’s game was another example of that.

9 hit outs and did sweet **** all across the rest of the game. If there’s any game for the Sweet Fanatics to come to the realisation he doesn’t make our team better tonight was it. Some think English had a shocker and still made Sweet look like he’d won an on field match day experience in a raffle.

Sorry VP but the obsession with Sweet now seems at a crazy coo coo level. He could sit on the bench as the medical sub all game and some in here would post how well the 2 ruck tactic worked with him in the team.

Pleased for Riley Garcia tonight. He looked and played liked he belonged out there. Only his 13th game. Could become a regular.

Certainly appeals to me more than McComb and they'd be competing for the same spot.

Some good additions to the defence - Buku, Treloar and even Hannan and with Richard’s pace and interceptions, thought we looked good for three quarters. Daniel to move up the field and fix some of those appalling final kicks into the f50. Busy bees tired in the last but the hard chasing of the inexperienced trio of West, Garcia and McNeil put pressure on their defence. Weightman still recovering from his elbow injury.
We should have been much further ahead before the last but a dozen or so rubbish balls into f50 was pathetic.
McLean into the front half in place of McNeil/Hannan should fix up a few of those inside 50s, he’s a brilliant kick inside 50, super creative.

Cody, West, Garcia & McLean is a good mixture of grunt, pressure, class, goal sense & aerial ability. Not super pacey but quick enough to put on pressure

I know commentators only do what they are told but surely they know that 3-4 misses in a row would not have all been goals had the first one one been kicked? Sport just doesn’t work like that, go back to the middle, Dogs get the clearance and then what?

Tonights the classic list management reason as to why you don't spend huge assets on defence.

You can find interceptors from anywhere. If reason enough was Buku playing a good game intercepting you look at the saints and there best player is a rookie draft selection who was intercepting at will for the entire night.
Yep, we got Trealor and Port got Ali Ali in the same trade period.

I do want to know why

There’s something not right with English.

Watched him closely at the game and he seemed a million miles away at times.

If it is concussion related then it’s concerning. For both he and the club. Hopefully it’s managed as it should be.
Agree with this, he struggles after coming back from concussion. We all hope no long term issues but.......

Tonight gives me hope. For next year.

We were pretty good tonight but geez St Kilda were awful.

It was a good win but we’re still up against it for making the 8. I don’t see us making it.

Need less injuries, no terrible GF loss hanging over us, hopefully some defensive acquisitions in trade and draft week and hopefully we will bounce back next year.

On St Kilda, as I said, they were awful.

I know some on here hate them and I understand that, but it must suck at the moment supporting them.

We live in an age of premiership droughts been broken. Us, Melbourne, Richmond. Geelong a few years before all of the above, Swans a few years before Geelong.

Saints been waiting since 1966, had three golden chances in 2009-10 with probably the best side they’ve ever had, and couldn’t nail one of them.

Since then, us, Richmond and Melbourne all broken their drought.

I’m actually convinced after tonight that St. Kilda don’t currently have a team that can win a flag.

I have a few Saints supporting friends - all great people who were thrilled for me when we won in 16 - all who’ve supported the Saints through bleak times and have watched on as all the above teams I mentioned broke their flag drought, and I’d dearly love for the Saints to win them a flag.

I feel sorry for them. I really wish they’d get to see a flag.

I know things can change but looking at St. Kilda tonight I was honestly wondering whether or not they’ll ever get it together and win one.

Seemed the poor last quarter had alot to do with Covid. Coach said a number of players were late out of bed and tested late but they were really worried there were more cases in the club.

Naughton tested late when he "didn't need to".

Schache and Hunter were asymptomatic and Naughton should be right for next week too.

Cordy is in the H&S protocols as well.

Plan is to play JUH, Naughton and Bruce together

Buku is now not needed as a forward and will return to full time defender.

Interesting Beveridge thought English was very good in the first half. Thought he had a mare most of the night.

Short story.... sickness probably tired us late but even so Beveridge was pretty annoyed with the fade out and poor entries into the forward 50.

It's going to be a good day when somebody finds the switch for Bailey Williams. He definitely seems more suited to playing up the ground than deep in defence but at the moment he is clumsy and unimaginative. Every possession seems laboured. I'm convinced he has another level (like Dale and Richards have gone to) but we just haven't been seeing it.

Anyone got any ideas how to unlock it? Confidence has to be part of it. Maybe just giving him consistent time on the wing would do it. Unfortunately getting consistent time in one role is hard for anyone who Bevo has decided is an all-purpose utility.

He needs to take ayahuasca and come to the conclusion that he is a result of the causal nexus, not a disconnected agent acting upon the world, but born of it, connected and interdependent on all things. Only then will he unlock his potential.

As much as I think McComb is a touch maligned , Garcia has to get a game over him every time

Problem with this is, the Ruck is such a specialist position and like Wicket Keeper in cricket you need a back up on tour. And that back up occasionally needs to play to be ready if our main Ruck(English) goes down, which he is does regularly. Unfortunately Martin is too old and Sweet not quite good enough. And you couldn’t go into a game with Cordy or Buku or Bruce as our main or only ruck.
Bring on Sam Darcy!

You wonder if he starts to change the way he plays due to fear of another one.

Definitely wasn’t his lively self the last 2 weeks. Although his tap/ruck work last night was probably the best it’s been all year. Particularly early.

You cannot have your designated ruck thinking like that.

Not sure what you mean by change but if he goes in ruck contests with any more hesitation he will get beaten up even more.

For a number 1 ruck his base performance needs to be higher.

Loving having West, Cody and now Garcia around the ball in the front half - just gives us that extra fight around the ball. Far cry from the likes of Scott & McComb rounding out those positions.

Surely Sweet & Tim both stay for the Gawn/Jackson match up - not sure how we fit Naughty, Bruce & Jamarra in though as Jamarra holds his place for the rest of the year and I think we’re best with the two genuine talls and English/Sweet.

Would be so helpful if Bruce could genuinely go to FB and just be a big body who won’t get beaten - let Keath play CHB with Buku 3rd tall. Just not sure Bruce can play back though but geez wouldn’t be the worst idea to trial it for a month considering our season is still shot - and who knows it might just fix some issues.

I don’t care what anyone says, I don’t care if Sweet has zero touches - our midfield needs to dominate for us to win and giving them two genuine ruckman at all times is giving us the best shot at that. I really couldn’t care less if Sweet plays 40% game time all in the ruck it’s worth it over an extra small. Until Darcy’s ready to take over that 2nd ruck which hopefully is sooner rather than later that’s our best set up, no one thinks it’s great but it’s better than the alternative
Thought Sweet showed some pretty good signs defensively and was trying to get involved offensively. If Bevo gives him some games to develop, think he could develop into a reasonably solid 2nd Ruck option which we need to have. Chop out options don't work near as well IMO

Similar to how he was in the Geelong game. He’s either switched on or off the boil. There’s no in between

Spot on.

We forget that Sweet hasn’t even played a dozen games.

Sweet has limitations but we are harder to play against with him in the side.

I think our midfielders and clearance players prefer him in the side

His ruck work last night was fine.

His reluctance to get involved around the ground was the concern.

Hannan was absolutely bog awful early, but I will give him credit, he lifted during the game his speed was pretty good just like Smith but both turned it over a lot. I'm not sure Smith hit a long target all night.

As others have said West and Garcia need to stay in. Both have the hardness we lack. Richards is tracking to be most improved this year.
We have a really good nucleus to work with and we must keep Dunks to keep.the age profile solid.

Despite his limitations, maybe I'm imagining it, the team looks better with Sweet in it. I feel more confident with him there than a part time ruck.

Not sure if it was mentioned in the pre game, but what was the story with the Max King jizz fest? Was it supposed to be a piece about him and Naughton and a fwd battle and they had to do a shitty last minute edit cos Naughty was out? It was our home game and it was all about Stk.Those who went to the game and plan to watch a reply, do so with the sound off. It was nauseating the barracking from BT and JB for Stk particularly in the last qtr

I think I'd have to give up on AFL if I was a saints fan right now - knowing that we could have drafted 3 absolute superstars in Bont, Petracca and Naughton would do me in. Every club has draft regrets, and a lot of it is just luck, but having the picks directly before those 3 and getting some fairly average players instead has to be particularly painful.

Probably the worst place to be for a supporter, knowing there isn't enough talent on the list after a long rebuild and you might have to do down again.
