Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

I’m gonna say now that I’m ok(ish) with the progress of our rebuild.

Not over the moon, and frustrated at several things largely around selection and list management, but given the players Nicks has been dealt I can see the ability for it to work.

We seem to have drafted a lot of players recently who - even if they do make it - are slow burns.

I’ve written off Ned being anything other than a trier, but in 2023 we need Jones, McAsey, Pedlar, Cook and Schoenberg to have a decent contribution at AFL level.

Plus have Fogarty, Thilthorpe, Butts, Soligo, Berry, Hinge, Hamill, Parnell and Rachele to continue improving on what they’ve shown.

And get Doedee right or trade him out in a JHF deal, and nail the ‘22 draft, with a few bonuses like Newchurch and/or Taylor making an impact.

I’m being optimistic - lesss go.

[either Nicks succeeds and we genuinely improve next year or we crash and get a top 2 pick plus a new coach - giddy up]

I’m used to excuses being manufactured to explain not okaying kids when they deserve a crack and hanging into injured or out of form seniors. But I honestly never thought we’d use winning SANFL games as an excuse. I thought we’d used everything available, surely we’re tapped out now. There can’t be anything left.

So Clarko has put a $1.6m pa price in his head for coaching.

You have to ask which bottom dwelling club has the soft cap space to afford that. Whoever Clarko coaches, they're getting a leg up from the AFL. Corrupt.

Clarko would have zero interest in us. We legit have one of the worst squads and he'd know it.
We wouldn't employ him as he wouldn't align with our philosophies.

Roo ' but Clarko we gotta play experience or the consumers won't turn up , Clarko Clarko '

Clarkson ' thanks Roo please don't tell me how to do my job'

It's hard to imagine him having interest in any cellar-dwellar, whether it's us or North or whoever. He's won 4 flags with an outstanding list, then he's been through the decline as that list aged and retired. I'm sure he'd love to come back for a crack at another flag, but would he be as interested in taking on another struggling side just a year after getting out of Hawthorn? I guess $1.6m a year would entice a lot of people to do stuff they don't really want to do, but that doesn't mean you'll get the result you want if the guy is just doing it for the cash.

That's not to say it wouldn't be a clear upgrade on Nicks, but until we get our list into shape I think we'd be wasting our money on a legendary coach like Clarkson. It feels like putting the cart before the horse. If we're going to splash some cash, I'd rather sack Hamish and co and spend the money on poaching recruiters with proven track records of building successful lists at other clubs.

Unfortunately Clarko would be looking to trade out or youth for more experience. He was addicted to senior players (sure he had some good ones to choose from!). In his final years when it was clear they needed to rebuild he kept on wanting to top up with experience rather than going to the draft.

We might get Jack Gunston back!

For sure..

Wonder if we could atleast pay Clarko a one off consultation to give an honest assessment of our list before he's off the market again.
Kelly said he likes to benchmark against the best.. well go and do it.
This is a really good idea but they won’t do it. They had the Dunstall review a few years ago. We’re now completely on track!

We should already have someone at the club that can assess our list in a similar manner to clarko. I know we don't but we need to get them in on a full time basis to replace them.

He would still get 10 wins out of it if Nick's gets 6-7. Clarko would like the challenge. I don't think our list would put him off. It would be those running our club that puts clarko off. Ogilvie and Reid would be sacked on the spot if he took the job along with Kelly. I doubt Roo would survive as well. We should go after Clarko but we will need the AFL to chip in 50% of his wage outside of the cap. They might do it to get us out of bottom 4 for the next 5 years. Having an uncompetitive Adelaide costs them in the rights negotiations.

It's worked for the Cats. He just tried to extend their run in a similar fashion - he had no problem asking Mitchell and Lewis to retire/move on, when it became apparent there was nothing left in the well.

I did that comparison with the Hawks list after our loss. It was disturbing how quickly, in comparison of shown ability, their list galloped ahead of ours.

Barring a miracle, in 2023 I can't see us moving ahead of the sides currently above us on the ladder. Could be a Nicks form line of 18th, 15th, 16th, 16th ??

Everybody at the AFC is bleating that we are making progress and "ahead of where we were this time last year". No one at the club is capable or willing to make an honest assessment. Plenty posting on here could do it for them.

That so many of our wins in the last two seasons have been via the boot of an ageing Tex is a worry, because whilst he's still got it, he starts next season as a 33yo. By the time the rest of the squad is ready to move up out of the bottom three, Tex won't be here to provide a kick up the ladder
