I dont reacon Betts is salty and hasnt been getting on with his life since the camp.. I reacon Betts wouldve been pissed off at the time but would‘ve moved on from that pretty quickly.

Betts is just bringing this up now because he has a book to sell.
He has a go at the club every opportunity he gets. The people involved aren't even at the club anymore. I think he needs to bury the hatchet with the club and stop dragging up old history. I'm sure the club has apologised to him so what more does the bloke want from the club? Is he going to be still bringing it up in 20 years?

And yet what confuses me is his Google ads where he is shown ‘only’ in Crows gear?

Is that because Google is targeting you with the Crows version?

I haven't heard whether Carlton fans get a different version but it would be easily to do.

Google and the AFL, both sinister organisations!

Newchurch - the wise heads at the AFC may have already seen enough to know he won't make it, that's why he didn't debut when there was a vacancy and he'd just had his best month of SANFL.

Yes and no. If we forgo our 1st this year we miss bringing in one of the top rated mids. So while we could get rankine, we are still short on top end quality on ball...unless rankine will transition as an outside mid?

Its just one to consider if we have to give up pick 4 to get him

Rachele and Rankine rotating through the middle and up forward as Rachele builds his tank

The average prediction by Bigfooty Adelaide posters was that we would finish 14th. Check the Thread.

To be fair this was more optimistic than the AFL media, more than 50% predicted that we would win the wooden spoon.

We are on track to finish between 13th and 15th.

And yet all through the season - even when many of our losses have been competitive and we have played an even much younger team than expected - much of the comments on here are sack Nicks rebuild is going nowhere. The season has basically tracked exactly how we thought it would. Bar a couple of frustrating selection choices at times!

because he wont get past north or west coast in the PSD no matter how much money he puts on his head..

north has tons of cap space and WC will have a couple of big names retire this year so should have space too.
I highly doubt any club would risk taking a player with 800k on his head if he says he wants to be heading back to SA for family. Jack Martin was more highly valued at the time but no one took him.
the real point though is that GC lose him regardless, so they have no leverage in trade discussions with us if we hold our nerve. The other point is that GC don’t actually need any picks this year, so a player like Keays would probably be very interesting to them.

All this talk about salary - does it feel like Vic clubs always just seem to be able to find huge amounts of money to bring in players, after already having players on big contracts?

$900k, $1m, $1.1m, $1.2 million - numbers like this are thrown around regularly for teams like Geelong, Richmond, Melbourne, Collingwood. While we see $600-$800k as a huge contract.

Might be absolutely nothing in this at all, but the numbers just always seem to feel off.

Personally, I think salaries for players should be public information, for the purposes of integrity of the salary cap.

If every players salary for each club was made public, it would be so open and transparent that it should lead to no possible way to breach the salary cap.

The salary cap is $13.54m per Club, so in theory you should be able to add all the players salary per year to be equal to or less than the yearly limit.

“wise heads at the AFC”..

sorry.. but when it comes to our very recent list management and game selection history.. just who are these “wise heads” you speak of?..

Okay, so if you assume we come 14th, and GC come 11th (I think we'll finish above Hawthorn, but below Essendon) - that puts something like this on the table (inc. Amon and McStay compo at end of 1st round):

Rankine + 8
for
5 + 25 + future 3rd

If we're giving up our own first, that's the maximum I'd go. Picks will obviously blow out to 6 and 9 with Ashcroft bid
I wouldn't mind this (maybe without the third going their way and our future second not current).

Port would (likely) pick just in front of us and could be picking from all but one of Mackenzie (big bodied mid), Cadman (KPF), Jefferson (KPP) and Phillipou (local big bodied mid). I'd prefer Phillipou or Mackenzie, but a key forward to go with TT and Fog would also be on our shopping list. Hell, even if Busslinger (KPD) fell to us he would make us better (despite the melts on this board).

Mutineer you would have a better view on prospects for this and next year. Would you do a 1st round pick swap this year or next to get Rankine in the door?

Doesn't add up for me either.

I wonder if it's easier to keep a team together at the bottom end of the talent list over there, or talent vs. cost of talent in general?

"If I'm not going to be paid a premium for my ability I might as well do it back home in Victoria"

Like you say, I just can't imagine the idea of us paying someone 1.2 million being thrown out casusally in the media.

I think it always seems like this because there are always 2-3 Vic clubs in the bottom six, so every year someone is looking to land a big fish.

Also, they seem happier to pay big money for a few stars, and less for the rest of the team, whereas we seem to have a flatter pay structure, probably due to having to pay $100k+ more for young players from Vic to keep them in SA

Also being indigenous and saying he wants to be closer to family, would be a pretty big dick move for an interstate club to poach him. Need to be culturally sensitive around that. I'm sure his manager would tell those clubs he would refuse to play and wants to be near "his mob"

The closest I hope Dawson ever gets to the midfield is the wing, he's the guy to finish off the grunt guys work not inside the contest.

I think it's worth giving him some time in there to see if he goes ok. I don't see it personally, but he seems to create time and space. What if he looks a little Bontish in there. Mad not to at least try it, given we're supposed to be rebuilding.

yes I would, preferably this year.

being indigenous shouldn't make someone immune from being subject to the same rules as everyone else. If he goes into a draft and ends up in VIC, well, stiff shit, that's the system.

Epic button pushing here!
I’m being sincere.
Phillipou is exactly what we need and should be our first choice on draft night. I can’t see him slipping past you guys though so Rankine would probably cost you that pick. Knowing our luck though he goes to the Suns for the pick you give them 🤣

Then in two seasons from now, when Phillipou cant get a look in to the suns talent stacked midfield, we’ll get him to ask suns for a trade and return home with the promise of more opportunity…
