So increase Dawson's contract by 50%?? I would as well.
Id suggest Dawson was happy with the offer. Don't you? If Rankine is undecided about Crows or Power you have to either pay him enough to decide to come or gift him to Port. Make no mistake, until he signs, regardless of media speculation, Port is in play.

No one knows Dawsons contract
Dawson's 5 x $600k is cheap.

I've got no idea why posters quibble about the $, to lever (pun intended) players out of their club you need to offer overs.

We have a minimum TPP spend every year and right now I've got FA idea who is getting the big $ at the AFC to get us up to the minimum.

Forget the dollars, it's irrelevant. We just need to get this done and not get precious about first round picks. The good trading clubs if they target a top player they expect to pay, Shiel, Saad, Cerra, Neale.

Hopefully Gold Coast, as they're loaded with more picks than they can possibly use this year, will take next years first. Just get it done!

$50-$100k, why quibble over that when the salary cap is $14 million - while we have some good players emerging I don’t see a heap of guys that will require big coin

exactly. the salary cap is due to return to pre covid levels

in the last 4/5 years we’ve had all these lads, and their salaries leave the team;

bcrouch - $550k
lynch - $700k
talia - $7-800k
Dmac - $400k
Betts - $600k
Josh Jenkins - $550
sam jacobs - $450k
Gibbs - $600k

and bit players like kelly, lever, hartigan, douglas all retire or move elsewhere..

and what big ticket players have we replaced them with apart from Dawson?.. NONE!!.. look at the age profile of the group. the replacements have all been kids on flipping minimum wages!.. and keays who’s a delist we snagged.

as well as mcrouch and tex re-signed on what wouldve been smaller sized salaries.

its reported we have a heap of salary cap space and hopefully we’ve been paying some forward too which means more money to play with.

if it takes $800k a year to get Rankine to come home.. just do it.. Front load the hell out of it so we pay a shitload of it off in the first year so then the remaining years you're effectively only paying him the $600-650 you’d want to pay..

what the heck else are we gonna be spending it on?.

end of next year sloane’s $800k salary ends freeing up even more coin. force the bloke to retire.. he’s cooked..

if we miss out on Rankine because he wants to grab another contract and be loyal to the suns until till FA i'm fine with it.. but if decides he wants to come home now and we miss out on him because the powa outbid us coin wise, because the conservative tight arses at the club dont wanna overpay, then I’ll flipping vomit.

Mmmm ? .....let me understand your rationale

Rankine is a good future player, deserving of opportunity .....however, if we get Rankine, who cares about Newchurch

View attachment 1464032

Good to see, you're all in on Newchurch

Correct. Newchurch is made irrelevant in a scenario where Rankine is brought in.

After all, it's a system that already has Rachele as a small forward for next year, Milera will be fitter, Cook and Pedlar are better prospects (and both should be pushing for game time), you'd assume a McHenry/Keays will feature a lot next year as a defensive forward, we're likely to be going tall with one of Gollant and McAdam and adding Rankine who looks like he's starting to work shit out means we have no real need for a rougher third year forward prospect going into 2023 outside of a permanent SANFL player; not ideal for said player when list spots are tight.

I'm not holding my breath until the trade goes through.

Let’s be honest, we could have a player say yes, promise, have pen in hand and at the last minute circumstances change (another club offers more $ or clubs don’t agree to a deal, player gets cold feet, player uses club to get better $ at original club, pressure). Until I see ‘player trade lodged’ by the AFL it’s not 100% in the bag.

Fans blame the club/recruiters and away we go again. Imagine how many deals fall through that we never hear about.

But we are allowed to get excited…. Just in case

I'm keeping a Newchurch ahead of a Murphy/Mchenry. The blokes are total plodders.

Yes and no. If we forgo our 1st this year we miss bringing in one of the top rated mids. So while we could get rankine, we are still short on top end quality on ball...unless rankine will transition as an outside mid?

Its just one to consider if we have to give up pick 4 to get him

I really hope that Eddies interview about the camp (who more than deserved to tell his story), doesn’t sway Rankine.
Doubtful it will, the club is bigger than anyone who made that decisions and those who made the decision have rightfully left by their own or been sacked. Big mistake were made with us putting faith in the organiser of the CM and then not immediately dealing with the outcome.

Whilst I agree with this concept in theory, other posters have made the points multiple times that a top pick doesn't always translate into a top player.

Bryce Gibbs was pick 1, but I'm taking a Rankine all day everyday over him at pick 1.

It happened in the early 2000s. Crows had signed a big name player from Richmond, even posed with the jumper for the media, but the might before the trade went through, a whole host of Richmond team mates went to his house and begged him to stay. Pulled out right before the trade became official. Can't remember the player though. It's the one and only time I've ever heard of it happening.

McHenry is certainly living the completely average small forward life at the moment. Newchurch might impact Murphys spot at the current moment (or at least, will next year), but that's the one Rankine takes if he signs, as Murphy is in no-mans-land. Newchurch isn't competing for a spot with McHenry, as he's occupying a defensive small spot, a necessary evil for a team trying to rise up the ladder as a way to get around the fact they can't routinely outgun sides.

That said, last week also showed how close McHenry is to having his career snuffed out (and how out of his control it is, seeing it's in hands of Sam Berry).

if it gets us a potentially elite midfielder.. yes please.

Doedee and our 2022 1st out.. JHF in

worrell takes doedee’s spot.

2022 2nd and 2023 1st out… Rankine in

mcrouch out.. pick in the 50’s in
frampton out… pick in the 50’s out

these later picks used to match a bid on Max M..
It doesnt really answer the question. In your mind you believe that Doedee is now only a "half decent". Is that correct?

It is “interesting” that the posters who constantly rant and rave that we should be playing Newchurch in the AFL have NEVER seen him play in the flesh.
The irony is that you are quoting a poster that i reckon also hasn’t seen him in the flesh.

A lot of posters said the exact same thing about this year, just go peruse the pre season prediction thread and see how many had us rising up the ladder, and yet here we are, more than likely to finish with less wins than last year. All while arguably having the healthiest list in the AFL.
The average prediction by Bigfooty Adelaide posters was that we would finish 14th. Check the Thread.

To be fair this was more optimistic than the AFL media, more than 50% predicted that we would win the wooden spoon.

We are on track to finish between 13th and 15th.

Why on earth would we use pick 4 on Rankine when he's uncontracted and we'll finish below Gold Coast on the ladder?
because he wont get past north or west coast in the PSD no matter how much money he puts on his head..

north has tons of cap space and WC will have a couple of big names retire this year so should have space too.

It would have no impact whatsoever. Betts needs to give it a rest. The camp was stupid but it was no way as bad as it was made out in the media. The best thing for Betts is to stop the saltiness and get on with his life.

I think Don Pykes summation that the Crows were mentally weak has been shown to be spot on.

Just stuffed up the execution.

I dont reacon Betts is salty and hasnt been getting on with his life since the camp.. I reacon Betts wouldve been pissed off at the time but would‘ve moved on from that pretty quickly.

Betts is just bringing this up now because he has a book to sell.
