A couple of observations:
  • Hewett is not falling to pick 14
  • Robertson is not worth a second rounder. He was drafted in the second round 3 years ago and he’s done nothing to justify that rating since. I don’t buy the theory that Brisbane’s midfield is so elite that there’s simply no opportunity for Robertson; Tunstill has got games at Brisbane, so has Mathieson and Mitch Robinson. He’s just not that good. He’s this year’s SPS.

Agree, except think he's worth the punt for the right price

Pick 22 3 years ago, very hard to argue he's close to that still. He's played 22 games in 3 years and can't get in this year in a midfield that clearly needs something extra to compete with the big dogs in the league.

Pick 38 (at best) plus the promise not to bid on Ashcroft. Gives Brissy 465 points (and the list spot to use them) on Ashcroft. Plus potentially another 225 points if North don't bid on him and he slips to 3.

Article below says that due to the fact that Buddy is in the top 25% of earners at the Swans he is a Restricted Free Agent, therefore a trade might just have to happen if Sydney choose to match any offer.

If Buddy wants to leave Sydney will do the right thing and trade him cheap. He’s played 330+ games, is the only one left from his draft year still going. Has given great service to Sydney. They don’t need his salary on the books. They help make the move possible.

That's why we shouldn't give up much for him .
We got nothing for brander who has is in exactly the same position

Depends if he's contracted for next year or not, no one seems to know for sure.

If we do get him, I guarantee we will give up more than this board thinks we should, because it's the Eagles and we don't play the bad guy when it comes to trades.

Eagles keen on Victorian Aaron Cadman - 196cm forward , Cadman has links to WA having spent several years here .
Eagles strategy will depend on how they view the calibre of midfield talent available.
Depends on where Aaron Cadman goes in the draft I imagine .

He signs a 2 year extension to the end of 2026 and we go hard with 2 first rounders if he comes on as expected. If he is to come on and be a forward and second ruck then Jack Williams will stay deep and we play my coaching technique of two leading CHF's to either side of outside the square coming from defence. The moment one gets the ball the other runs deep to inside 50 for the leading jumping mark whilst the big body ties up the deep defender.

It's where I see Allen and Mcdonald excelling and I think it is the potential next stage of forward line evolution.

Out of contract at the end of 2024. Gives us two drafts to brinq in the other midfield pieces we need on top of Chesser, Hough and Culley.

Our 2024 1st plus 2025 1st would get it done and 2025 may be compromised with a Tassie team getting a heap of picks after prelisting in 2024.

I don't think the prelisting happens until at least 2025 with a fully compromised draft in 2026 with entry in the league in 2027. I also think Tassie could have an on par attrition rate for trades to GWS. It's ****ing cold, ****ing wet, **** all to do and behind even WA in the culture stakes by about 20 years. The north and south also hate each other and nobody likes to travel more than 30 mintues or so.

AFL Draft: Josh Kennedy retirement, Will Ashcroft’s Brisbane link brings Vic forward into focus for West Coast

A rangy left0footed tall forward in the mould of Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron is shaping as an potential draft replacement for Eagles spearhead Josh Kennedy in this year’s draft.

West Coast have been linked to Greater Western Victoria Rebels tall forward Aaron Cadman – a 196cm forward who is likely to come into even stronger focus for the Eagles now that Will Ashcroft has committed to Brisbane as a father-son draftee.

Ashcroft is rated as the best midfield prospect in this draft and the most likely to be AFL ready in 2023.

Cadman, who has starred in attack for both his NAB League under 18s team and the Victoria Country team, has grown up as a Richmond supporter but has links to WA with his family having several years here.

West Coast’s draft strategy will depend greatly on how they view the calibre of other midfielders in the draft after Ashcroft’s decision to opt in as a Lions father-son.

Brisbane will certainly match any early bid for Ashcroft, the player widely tipped as the No.1 pick.

The initial view of the likely Eagles strategy was that they would opt for midfielders, pace and power with Luke Shuey (32) with hamstring issues, Jack Redden to turn 32 later in the year and Andrew Gaff, 30, all at the veteran stage.

Elliot Yeo’s (28) battles with groin and soft tissue issues has further compounded the problem.

But the Eagles did pick up midfielder Jai Culley in the mid-season rookie draft while Campbell Chesser is highly rated and hasn’t played yet. Tim Kelly is still 28 and in his prime.

And while the Eagles have Jack Darling and Oscar Allen to play as tall forwards next year Darling is 30 and tall forward options take longer to mature. Rhett Bazzo, drafted last year, is regarded as a defender and Jack Williams is considered a forward/ruck type who will take some time.

Cadman’s interstate 18s form has lifted him in draft reckoning from a player likely to be taken in the middle stages of the first round (somewhere between 10-15), to one likely to be taken inside of the top 10 with his stocks rising rapidly.

He is now considered to be slightly ahead of WA’s three most likely first round prospects – key defender Jed Busslinger, midfielder Reuben Ginbey and midfielder-forward Elijah Hewett.
I hope that’s just the west talking shit and not inside info. That’s the last player I’d want at pick 2(3).
Please pick a star midfielder. 🤞

Sensible with multiple caveats.

Mids we desperately need. We cetrainly need a key forward target as well to replace Darling assuming Allen is a winner.

But one word springs to mind - Brander.
The only sensible thing for me is "it depends on how the Eagles rate this year's mids". But Warlord, Sheezle, and Phillipou are rated top 5 and Cadman 10 - 15. To suggest Culley and Chesser fill our mid void suggest the writer is thinking about our midfield over the next 3 years as opposed to what it needs to be to compete for a flag in 5 - 7 years.

I can't seen us spending a top 3 pick on a player widely rated mid first round.

It is pretty obvious we will need to draft one, and a good one at some stage.
Next year or the year after with our first pick. If there's one floating about with this years second and they're the best player available then we should strongly consider it, but should still be pulling the trigger over the next 2 seasons with our top draft pick.

Are we too fat or just thick? Is our fitness regime top notch or behind the 8 ball?
I'm going to save my judgement until round 1 next year! As whilst we didn't make finals in 2021 and they had a longer preseason loads of players didn't have a full preseason and then COVID hit Perth later.

If there is any fat scrutiny next season, we need to seriously change our fitness regime!!!

Key forwards really need 4 years of development to really hit their stride, even those with very high talent levels. Mainly due to strength, conditioning and then experience. Anyone we draft barring a miracle in 2023 won't be ready to impact games until 2027 or be dominant untill 2029 and thats if you pick the right player.

Agree, but this year the players just aren't worthy of a top 3 pick. I tend to think, given the time it takes them to develop, some KPFs don't get given the time they need.

There's a reason that Tassie doesn't have a team already. The catchments of either Hobart or Launceston are small, and they don't overlap.

I'm saying this as someone who has enjoyed a weekend in Hobart. But a weekend is all you need.

I agree, but it is sensible analysis of our need for key a forward, unless you are in the 'play waterman ' camp

Hence i'd prefer to trade for one even over the odds if needed when required. Otherwise this rebuild will just lead to the base for a further rebuild. The truth also is for every 2 top 10-15 draft pick key forwards you're probably going to be lucky to get one genuine star player.

Cadman reminds me of Charlie Curnow with the few games I’ve seen ..

“Have been linked” - by who? By this journo, writing this article, just now?

Agreed.

We have to hope that Oscar Allen develops into a no. 1 key forward post Darling. It then gets much easier to find a no. 2 key forward to complement him, if can't get a Logan McDonald at a reasonable price.

If he doesn't develop into that, then we will have to give absolutely everything for Logan McDonald.

We also need a ruck. Why not add that in.

We all agree that ideally we need another good key forward for when darling retires. By all reports the draft just doesn't have a key forward worth taking tin the top few picks this year.

The timing is right for 2026 to be trading in a key forward heading to their prime. By the end of 2025 we should have all the major pieces plus a fair amount of experience into them. If what we are then lacking is a gun key forward then we trade for one. I'd much rather Barnett with our second or third pick and Phoenix Foster with our third rounder if we are headed to the draft this year. You add two mids, a Ruck and a guy who has played mainly forward with some ruckwork but to me looks to be a key defender in the future. Foster is the same height as Williams but is much better around the ground and significantly more athletic.

Very good summation and I do like the players suggested at the points in the draft that you link them to us.

Two Mids, then a ruck and a KPP, pretty sound drafting strategy this year when you balance and overlap - both our list needs and where certain players are stacked in this years draft.

I agree, we will be giving up a second round pick for him. I don't mind it though because our reputation as fair traders has a lot of benefits. If we get him, that's 4 players we've acquired from Brissie since Yeo and I doubt those would have happened if we were D heads like Essendon. It also means clubs will trust us with handshake agreements, like not bidding on Ashcroft.
