AFL Draft: Josh Kennedy retirement, Will Ashcroft’s Brisbane link brings Vic forward into focus for West Coast

A rangy left0footed tall forward in the mould of Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron is shaping as an potential draft replacement for Eagles spearhead Josh Kennedy in this year’s draft.

West Coast have been linked to Greater Western Victoria Rebels tall forward Aaron Cadman – a 196cm forward who is likely to come into even stronger focus for the Eagles now that Will Ashcroft has committed to Brisbane as a father-son draftee.

Ashcroft is rated as the best midfield prospect in this draft and the most likely to be AFL ready in 2023.

Cadman, who has starred in attack for both his NAB League under 18s team and the Victoria Country team, has grown up as a Richmond supporter but has links to WA with his family having several years here.

West Coast’s draft strategy will depend greatly on how they view the calibre of other midfielders in the draft after Ashcroft’s decision to opt in as a Lions father-son.

Brisbane will certainly match any early bid for Ashcroft, the player widely tipped as the No.1 pick.

The initial view of the likely Eagles strategy was that they would opt for midfielders, pace and power with Luke Shuey (32) with hamstring issues, Jack Redden to turn 32 later in the year and Andrew Gaff, 30, all at the veteran stage.

Elliot Yeo’s (28) battles with groin and soft tissue issues has further compounded the problem.

But the Eagles did pick up midfielder Jai Culley in the mid-season rookie draft while Campbell Chesser is highly rated and hasn’t played yet. Tim Kelly is still 28 and in his prime.

And while the Eagles have Jack Darling and Oscar Allen to play as tall forwards next year Darling is 30 and tall forward options take longer to mature. Rhett Bazzo, drafted last year, is regarded as a defender and Jack Williams is considered a forward/ruck type who will take some time.

Cadman’s interstate 18s form has lifted him in draft reckoning from a player likely to be taken in the middle stages of the first round (somewhere between 10-15), to one likely to be taken inside of the top 10 with his stocks rising rapidly.

He is now considered to be slightly ahead of WA’s three most likely first round prospects – key defender Jed Busslinger, midfielder Reuben Ginbey and midfielder-forward Elijah Hewett.
So what that will mean is we will still struggle to get inside 50’s but really efficient once it gets in.

The other thing i'd be inclined to take the risk on is trading our first next year to GC for their first this year if Elijah Hewett is there.

That would be pick 7 or 8. Have to back ourselves in to outperform that next year which, IF, we get a good draw for being second last, and a decent run on injuries we should be able to match/beat.

GC might be inclined if they end up with Adelaide's first round this year for Rankine.

We also need a ruck. Why not add that in.

We all agree that ideally we need another good key forward for when darling retires. By all reports the draft just doesn't have a key forward worth taking tin the top few picks this year.
Darling looks as though he could easily play for another five years. Cannot understand this obsession with collecting key forwards who won’t get played while having a pop gun midfield. I will be seriously disappointed if we don’t get a midfielder with our #2 pick.

I really like Cadman, so going to keep an open mind here.

Pick 2 - absolutely not!!!

I've said it a few times, I'm not hugely sold on anyone at pick 2 at the moment. I do think after Ashcroft it's pretty even to player 15, so my preference at the moment is trade back and try get some more draft capital. If we could get 2 x inside top 16 picks we could walk away with a Cadman and a good midfielder; Mackenzie, Szybkowski, Hollands, Clark, Hewett. Depending where the pick is Phillipou/Tsatas might even fall to there.

I wonder whether a Dev Robertsen being a done deal, might even influence their decision to look at Cadman. Who knows.

We would need a significant premium on our first in 2023. I would be want their pick 8 plus their second rounder currently at 26 plus another second rounder in 2023

2023 is viewed as a strong draft year especially at the pointy end and we won’t be climbing out of the bottom 6 with a real likelihood of being bottom 2.

I haven't seen Cadman rated in the top 5 anywhere. If the Eagles have their eyes on him, surely it's by trading in another first rounder (or trading down pick 2 for two picks in the top 15) and picking up a midfielder and Cadman.

As for Robertson, I don't think his value has significantly dropped from where he was picked; 38 is too low, 26 is about right.

Why not? Bloke can't get games ahead of Robinson and the Barometer...

38 or they can keep him.

All this talk about drafting a forward with Jack Williams sitting there just working away.
We have a developing forward already.
With Waterman/JD and Allen as the current setup.
I don't see the need to reach with 2 for a KPF at all.

Pick 2 will be a mid, our 2nd should be a mid with our 3rd and 4th picks being best remaining for needs preferring mid/small fwds/defenders.

Agreed 100%

Our squad needs an overhaul for sure, but our forward line is our best line. There doesn't appear to be a standout generational key forward so go with best available at 2 ... Which will be a midfielder.

Pretty sure same argument was made in past, just swap Williams with mcinnes.

Williams has obvious limitations, I'm rooting for him, but he's still along shot imo.

That being said with pick 2, just take the mid pieman.

Need Cadman to replace Brander

Cadman sounds like the worst superhero, what's his special power? The ability to use drawing software?

Very handy drafting tool and let's be honest, our drafting needs as much of a leg up as it can get. ;)

He's only in his third season, managed 22 games, including 16 last year, for whatever reason (and maybe briztoon can shed more light), he's not able to push into a team that is challenging for top 4 this year. But to me, that puts his development right about where you'd expect a pick 22 to be.
