You teach players to win by winning. You do not want to create a culture where performance doesn’t matter and playing your best players out of position and then trading them out for deals that don’t improve our draft hand (not this year anyway) doesn’t offset the loss of players that perform and set standards. This is not how we built our list ahead of 2008.

Players that are 26 or older:
Scis
Impey
Frost
Breust
Chad

3 are guaranteed best 22. That is the profile of a wooden spooner.

I don’t like the return, but the 2008 team did not win much in 2004, 2005 or 2006. The big difference is we were able to get a good return for trading players then(thanks Norths).

So in the end:

Out: O'Meara, Mitchell, Gunston
In: Amon, Meek, Stephens, 41, 48, 50, F2nd, F4th.

If we can package these 3rds to move up the order we still could end up with a good draft hand. But currently it's a little underwhelming.

6, 24, 41, 48, 50, 52, 65

O'Meara 99 games and Howe 96 games. We can only hope any sons they have are terrible footballers, unlike Anderson and Allen.

And gets their pick $10,000. Why would you gift that money to a player from another club, just so that you could do that club out of 500 points?
It’s the afl and pick 1, seriously who gives a **** about 10k?

We weren't that bad.
At least we finished 13th with them in the team and 8 wins.
Mitchell 5th and JOM 7th in B&F.
Overall, the team showed a lot of promising signs with a good blend of youth and experience.
Next year is not going to be pretty.

We weren't that bad because our backline worked it's arse off, and our transition football was at times bloody exciting.
Our MIDFIELD craft, in terms of not just winning the footy but what we did with it with first use, when TOM and JOM were in there, was incredibly disappointing.
When Newk looks a star through the center, while a Brownlow medalist accumulator and fellow strong bodied Omeara can't with any regularity make us dangerous playing through that area in their natural positions, why the hell would you want to continue that storyline?

Insanity reigns.

We retained senior players to lead the young players. Crawford, vandenberg, Dixon, barker, smith etc plus we had Mitchell, hodge and brown from the 2001 draft already high caliber players to build around. We have completely guttered the list of experience and leaders.

Geelong won the premiership and get Bruhn, Henry, Bowes and keeps pick 7

We loose Top 10 players in Gunston, Mitchell, Omeara for picks in the 2nd round and 40's and get Amon, Stephens and Meek who are fringe players. Any chance we can trade MM for Andrew Mackie, this is so underwhelming?
Amon a fringe player? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You do realise he was Port's highest Brownlow vote-winner, right? That's got to mean he's not a fringe player I would've thought.

Check his highlights reel from this year alone - do yourself a favour!

Good example, with pick 2 and 3 my concern is north go past us. Least we have there old recruiting guys……

So we moved on two players who were brought in to win the next piece of silver wear. Omeara was heading home after next year so we got something other that a forth rounder for a 30 yr old with. Bad knees. Mitchell was great for the hawks but was limited to his flexibility and struggled to take ground so his possessions often slowed our ball movement. We picked up a big bull which we have not had for some time. Worpell has his best year will Mitchell injured so gets the chance to go back into that role. Add another preseason into ward, the duke and players like McDonald and day our mids could be quiet damaging. Really like what ward dishes up in his first year. Spin is looking ok if blanck is able to hold the bigger fowards (pre season will help) and free up cj, scrim and Sicily to build from the backline. What did people think we were getting for two aging midfielders. Meek gives us a safety net if lynch has concussion issues so we’re not reliant on reeves for the full year. I’m actually more than happy with Amon also coming in as a high class winger.

If you want to blame anyone for us not getting value for Tom, realistically you have to start with Sam. You can't remove a player from his best role all season, let everyone know you're happy to move him on and then expect to get true value for them.
My guessing is Sam played a big part in Tom's departure. Sam wanted him out and didn't fit in his future plans. I am OK if that's what Sam wanted as Tom was clearly in the decline anyway.

Okay - but trading Mitchell doesn’t mean performance doesn’t matter next year. Sam showed this year that you don’t get gifted games. I hardly think Sam’s going to rock up on day 1 of pre-season and say ‘right lads, Titch is gone so just run laps until we get flogged all year!’ and sit in a hammock.

I’m not as worried about the leadership and experience situation as others. Hardwick, sicily, frost etc all exhibit these traits in the backline which is where I expect most of our football to be played

Who exactly was offering more????
We keep them get some leadership and protection for the kids set training standards and someone to talk to them about their game in game and after the game that isnt a coach. The kids also get another 20 games into them. That is more valuable than picks we got. Unless we are taking 4 picks unless we upgrade some of those picks they are wasted
