Hawthorn National List and Recruiting Manager Mark McKenzie said the trade agreement strengthens the club’s position at the draft.

“Last year we were really clear that we wanted to invest in the development of our younger players. Premiership teams are not built overnight, and this about building our next phase of talent,” McKenzie said.

“Being able to secure further picks has always been a priority for us. This deal allows us to continue to add further youth to our list, while also giving Tom a fresh opportunity.

“Being a three-time Peter Crimmins Medallist, Tom has played a pivotal role during his 106 games at Hawthorn, and the club would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him well for the future.”

“This year's trade period was the next step in a longer plan to develop our list and return to premiership contention, and we won’t get there if we don’t make bold decisions.

Jaeger O'Meara joins Fremantle, Lloyd Meek joins Hawthorn

TRADE
October 12, 2022

Fremantle receives Jaeger O'Meara and a future fourth-round selectionFROM: HAWTHORN

Hawthorn receives Lloyd Meek and a future second-round selection (tied to Western Bulldogs)FROM: FREMANTLE

So 30 and Meek for OMeara and 60.

With matching 30 could be 25, 60 could be 45.

Challenge for Hawks now is, who do we retire next year to open up list spots ???

Hawthorn National List and Recruiting Manager Mark McKenzie said the deal done with the Dockers puts the club in a strong position.

“We are delighted to be bolstering our draft hand for 2023, while also ensuring a positive outcome for Jaeger to finish his career closer to home,” McKenzie said.

“We have a clear plan to be adding the best possible young talent to the club, and to now add another early pick for next season.

“This year's trade period was the next step in a longer plan to develop our list and return to premiership contention, and we won’t get there if we don’t make bold decisions.

“The club would like to acknowledge Jaeger’s service to the Hawthorn Football Club over the past six seasons and thank him for his contribution to the Hawks.”

We're a pushover.

I'm glad we continue to get the best outcome for exiting players, above the HFC's best outcome.

Cute.

Dogs will be worse next year. The JOM pico will be around 25 - 28. If so. that is a slight win.
Mitchell deal a slight loss depending on how many picks we use and if we can trade up.
Realistically we lost our 3rd & 4th best mids (Moore & Newk already in front) who will both be retired before we next make the 8.
All up we broke even so happy with that.

I'm far from sold on Worpel or Nash...we have very limited mid-field depth and moving on two of our best seems counter intuitive at best and negligent at worst...
Fine but your point was that the midfield is lacking physically which won’t quite be the case

Collingwood gave Mitchell 3 years and Freo gave JOM 4 years.

I'd expect them to have at least that much good footy left in them and they were both pretty good this year.

These are top tier players we gave away for untried WAFL, VFL players and peanuts.
Out: 33 yo ruck (BB) 31yo forward (JG), 31yo mid (LS), 30 yo KPD (KH), 29yo mid (TM) 28yo mid (JOM), 27yo mid (DH) 26yo mid (TP)

In: 27yo mid (Amon) 24yo ruck (Meek) 21yo mid (Stephens) plus 2 rookie upgrades and 3 picks and a future 2nd in a stronger draft.

That’s a big clean out! They’re obviously aiming for 2024/25 as the years we should push up the ladder

The talk about 2023 was gonna be bad anyway..we are aiming for 2024 is rubbish.
We are bottom 4 for 4 plus years.
We don’t even have a good draft hand. May do next year, but there will need to be 3-4 years development.
Good kids we currently have are ok.
Look, if the plan is success and flag from 2027-2028 on.. great..but it will be a hard next 4-5 years..

Agree. O'Meara deal is fine. Just the Giants opportunity cost that grates. Surprised media not questioning Freo giving him a 4 year deal.

We should have walked away from Mitchell deal if Pies wouldn't give 27 or 25. We really yielded to a dud trade there.

I’m not as worried about the leadership and experience situation as others. Hardwick, sicily, frost etc all exhibit these traits in the backline which is where I expect most of our football to be played
In 2005 we had hodge, Mitchell (rising star winner), Crawford (Brownlow, AA), Everett (AA), smith (AA), plus leaders like vandenberg to carry the performance load and set standards on and off the field (leave Everett out of that one!). And we barely one a game and finished second last. But in the process we had hodge breakout and get AA, mark Williams kicked 63 goals, Trent croad won AA, and we debuted three legends in buddy, roughy and Lewis. We simply don’t have those mature, high performing senior leaders on the list anymore so it is all going to have to come from the young players. It’s a dangerous and unproven road. It could turn out great but we are going to need players like Worpel and impey to give us a hell of a lot more then they have the past couple of years as there is literally no one else.

It does not matter what a player has done in the past, it matters what they will do in the future.

It was obvious Tom Mitchell could not keep up with Sam’s run and gun game plan. Watching Tom this year trail the pack was maddening. He would make his way into space in the middle and so still rack up the possessions, but it left some of our players in 2 on 1s.

Don’t get me wrong, Tom Mitchell is a brilliant extractor, fit Clarko’s defensive strategy perfectly, and will likely fit in well with the Pies. But I’d prefer our midfield has even numbers with, or outnumbers, the opposition around the ball.

Cooper Stephens is a gut runner who won his draft years combine yo-yo test and performed well in the 2km time trial. He will fit in nicely with our other gut runners in Ward, CMac, Moore, Nash, Long, Butler and Maginness.

We are loosing a player that did not fit the group and gaining one that does.

Currently on page 601 as I type this as I don’t want to be influenced by others comments.

WTF has just happened here, MM must be made of sugar.Hopefully this is the last of the clean outs and getting absolutely rogered by any list manager that wants a quick kill.

We might finally have the list now where we Sam wants to build from but god damn we are bad at trade period, in fact we suck.

disappointing day, hitting refresh after refresh and then stunned silence.

Draft hand is just BOG average and some one needs to be held accountable

it’s a shame MM woke up

Especially when we could have got Stephens done in isolation for bugger all.

Somehow Stephens is the centrepiece to Tom. Nuts.

How is a pick in the mid to late 20s (at best) considered an ‘early pick’? How have we met the goal of adding best possible young talent?
