This is a really weird situation. It's been obvious from the moment he was drafted that he didn't want to leave Melbourne, he's been quite open about his mental health struggles, he's having absolutely no success on the football field. And yet he signed a new contract in 2021, and then didn't request a trade this year despite flying over to Melbourne during trade week. He doesn't want to be at Adelaide, given his performances to date Adelaide probably don't want him to be at Adelaide, so why is he still there? Just seems like a lose/lose situation for all concerned, but one which could have been so easily avoided on numerous occasions.

No Vic teams have expressed any interest ?

It was a statement rather than a question

But yes, you're correct :)
I'll hold judgement on it as I read from some it may be serious family issues.

But yeah the whole situation was weird from day 1.

Think he's benefited from their recent desire to sign EVERYONE despite their talent long term and brag about it.... Only to delist contracted players later lol

...and pay for it twice with licence fees. How much did vic teams pay for their licence I wonder?

On the flip, it is pretty funny that we got more money from the sale of Waverley Park than we did from the sale of Football Park.

NAB getting out of the AFL - the blokes part anyway?

NAB ENDS LONG ASSOCIATION WITH AFL DRAFT

This week’s AFL national draft will be the final one sponsored by NAB.

The bank will also end its ties sponsoring Victoria’s under 18 competition, the “NAB League”, as well as the AFL Academy program, the national under 18 and under 16 championships and the draft combine.

It will however retain an association with the game, having extended its commitment to the AFLW competition for a further six years earlier this season.

Haha AFL Media seem to have blanked out the story on the AFL's website. Ive split the URL.

NAB ENDS LONG ASSOCIATION WITH AFL DRAFT

Mmmm I wonder who the AFL will turn to sponsor its draft and pre-season comps ;)

And don't think that we've reached anywhere near saturation point when it comes to the betting industry promotion and advertising in our sports either - not if what's happening in the US atm is any guide....

"In order to reap millions of dollars in fees, universities are partnering with betting companies to introduce their students and sports fans to online gambling."

Michigan State University’s athletic department has signed a deal with Caesar's Palace that is worth $8.5m over 5 years.

Other schools, too, have struck deals to bring betting to campus. After Louisiana State University signed a similar deal in 2021 with Caesars, the university sent an email encouraging recipients — including some students who were under 21 and couldn’t legally gamble — to “place your first bet (and earn your first bonus).”

And when the University of Colorado Boulder in 2020 accepted $1.6 million to promote sports gambling on campus, PointsBet ( a company also licensed as an AFL betting agency partner) sweetened the deal by offering the school an extra $30 every time someone downloaded the company’s app and used a promotional code to place a bet.

IMHO gambling and gambling advertising is a friggin cancer every bit as bad as the tobacco and tobacco advertising tsunami that used sport as a platform to spread their revenue base across Australia in the 70s and 80s before it was finally stopped/ rant

We need less frees paid not more FFS.
No we probably need more, but less of the BS technical ones and the umps get on their correct angles and pick up the obvious ones that they miss.

In the 1970's and 80's there was 70-100 frees a game, and around 60 in the early 90's, and it was a lot more open game.

When 3 umpires came in, in 1994, that's when frees were reduced to high 30s to low 40's per game average.

More rules, more interpretations, more umpires to umpire this, but less frees. It doesn't make sense.

I've posted this before -
Here is the number of free kicks paid in the first game listed for Rd 12 for every 5 years or so, or when the number of umpires changed. The only change in my games selection method is if Docklands is the first game in Rd 12, I will then use the 2nd game as the roof changes things in mid winter.
From https://afltables.com site

1970 105 frees
1975 72 frees
1976 85 frees ** 2 umpires introduced
1981 74 frees
1986 52 frees
1991 74 frees
1994 49 frees ** 3 umpires introduced
1999 36 frees
2004 15 frees
2009 36 frees
2014 35 frees
2015 27 frees
2016 33 frees
2017 36 frees

2004 season it got ridiculously low all season as can be seen from this info at AFL tables and comparing 2004 to different years.

If the 4th umpire calls play-on earlier when players clearly run a mile off the mark, I’m all for it.

If the stand rule was to stop the defender blocking the run of play, you need to force the player to kick over the mark or call play on - particularly when they are 55m out.

Every game should be umpired like the grand final let them play **** the tiggy touchwood frees right off.
I'm sure someone will come up with a stat that more are paid in grand finals lol.
