if the list spot is there and available id 100% be going for some cat B rookies.
Obviously have to vet them first.
Multiple cat b rookie spots available on our list atm

Should be putting as many through the list and be agressive with cutting any after a year if no signs of improvement

Churn and burn until we find that next super star that adapts quickly

Not many but you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take

This is a free hit tool to try improve the list, time to maximise it and try our luck
It isn’t a free hit.

we've got that many dev coaches i'm sure they can manage
Our dev coaches are yet to show that they can develop what we have into elite AFL footballers. Once they do that, then come speak to me.

First, second and third priority should be develop what we have. What shouldn’t be a priority is spreading them thinner (when we finally have them stocked), for a low% chance.

Fwiw we are the only club in the league with no Cat B rookies in 2023.

Interesting that every other club is having a swing, albeit some are doing it via NGA players who went undrafted.

I’d be curious to know how many of those 17 are NGA vs not. It’s a nice loophole for NGA products. Ultimately more a testament to our shi*** zone more then anything.

Developing NGAs on the fringe of being in the best 100 junior footballers in Australia is a fair shout from turning 210cm basketballers and Irish hurling players into AFL quality.

thanks for that!

yeah even if its just putting the best nga talent that was the closest chance to get drafted on our list lets do it, who knows they may develop quickly in the professional system

do something with the cat b list, like the other clubs are

Possibly. But we're the outlier nonetheless.

Using the last 2 premiers as benchmarks.

Geelong - 2x Cat B players. 1x NGA, 1x Irish. I count 3x former Cat Bs in their premiership side.

Melbourne - 2x Cat B players. 1x 206cm basketballer, 1x NGA from Northern Territory.

No it's not the be all, end all of recruiting. But I'm with The Nostradamus - you gotta be in it to win it.

Best practice above says you keep searching for quality players using all avenues possible.

Devils advocate - you’ve listed the oldest and one of the other more mature lists in the league. Neither has a surplus of kids that need development. It’s also a worthwhile exercise whilst you’re not getting access to the draft as much. Then there is also the fact they don’t have to do as much education with their existing group as someone like us. A lot of factors.

I’m not anti cat b. But we need to get our s*** in order first.

What do you mean possibly? It's worlds apart. One group knows the game the other group needs to be taught.

You're making my point here too. Stronger and older teams have more time for development. We're about two magnitudes worse than the second worse team in this league. I'd like to see us start to develop our own back flankers from second round picks before we try Cat Bs. Hopefully by the end of the year we see some turn around in our development but right now I don't see it as an opportunity cost to not be taking shots at the moon.

What's Clarko's history with category B rookies?

Personally I love us to take a flyer on some long jumper or 7ft basketballer assuming we're adequately resourced now.

Keep in mind, the last few years we've barely been able to develop players with a footy background, let alone some bloke that doesn't play.

Jiath goes alright

I think with his poor grasp of the English language it wouldn't have been overly taxing getting JHFF signed as a Cat B.
Then we could have kept pick 1 for some other campaigner.

Oh clarko is mad for them; Peterson, Garlett and at least 3 others.

The key is failed long jumper and failed basketballer and yes we have had serious troubling developing guys taken early enough in the Nat draft.

Someone list the success stories. Aint many legit ones anyways

Oh just I work to the old fashion rule that if Nostra agrees with your thought processes, there's every chance you're wrong. Or at least take a good hard look at yourself :p

I agree with others that we haven't been in the place to invest and currently have including rookies 28 players to get up to speed.
Bigger fish to fry currently.

From memory we did attempt to recruit Mason Cox, however he chose Collingwood.

We could very well be into some of these blokes, but they are going elsewhere?
