I mean I get the long term idea of the Giants, but it is interesting they draw crowds in Canberra.

They like footy in Canberra it's a bit of a neglected market.
Canberra is made up of a shittonne of expats from footy states.

GWS just arent good. They were bad last year and lost half their midfield. They are wooden spoon chances this year

Perryman subbed off with a string inside the first five minutes too.

If it wasn’t for Tom Green they’d be in for a smorgasbord of 2012-level reamings

In fairness most Rugby teams get pretty unimpressive crowds to regular matches too. It's just, something to do with Australian's attending things. Something in our culture, I dunno. SA and WA footy crowds are the exception. Even many all Vic games are average. Geelong being an exception but it's easily explained, the only one team town playing in a tin pot stadium. Easy conditions to score a sell out.

Did they get their branding wrong?

They were obviously targeting the West-to-Canberra to catchment, but maybe just ‘Sydney Giants’ was the go?

Edit: sky blue and navy probably captures the imagination a little better than charcoal and ochre, too
I think it is just a Sydney thing - 25k would put them in the top 6 on members ladder for the NRL in 2022.

The Homebush area demographic may also not be the biggest supporters of AFL - that’s traditional NRL territory, and soccer is growing rapidly.

Plus, no one knows when they are a “western Sydney” or a “Canberra team”. I actually thought that this game was in Canberra (because of the Easter show) and what surprised when I turned on the tv.

It also bloody hot today and was poorly advertised.

In case anyone would like to sing along with the Giants' quarter-time song, here are the lyrics:

Pump it up
You got to pump it up
Don't you know, pump it up
You got to pump it up
Don't you know, pump it up
You got to pump it up
Don't you know, pump it up
You got to pump it up
Don't you know, pump it up
You got to pump it up

It' especially a sydney thing. Back in the 80s they used to show nswrl games on the abc on sundays. Their crowds were about half the sanfl crowds at the time

Who is their recruiter ?

Forget about the original draft concessions, in the years since they’ve had a tonne of high draft picks as players left and they got picks in…. I’m not sure who theyve got to show for those picks.

The swans will be ok regardless of ladder position because Australian Rules is relatively entrenched in the inner, gentrified suburbs of Sydney.

If you walk around those suburbs you see plenty of kids with Sherrins in their hand or going to footy training. It's becoming the sport of choice for rich people in those areas as the scandals in rugby (and soccer) stack up.

The problem with the Giants is that western Sydney is a different ball game. The demographics lean much more to rugby and soccer. Participation of AFL is non existent.

And further, the Giants aren't even based in western Sydney.

It's going to be a hard but to crack, especially with how the Giants are set up.
