Autopsy Round 6, 2023: Carlton v St.Kilda

Who do you feel would be the benchmark team to beat??
A lot consider it to be Collingwood and we went very close there.
I’ll be taking the lid off if we beat Geelong and Sydney.
I know Geelong didn’t start off too well and Sydney copped an absolute pizzling on the weekend but if we beat or go close to those two I’ll be a bit more of a cocky campaigner than I already am.
It’s a very open year. Still reckon it’s Melbourne, Geelong and Pies. We are next rung down but gaining ground and might gain a bit more with some key ins to come back from injury.

Some thoughts from level 3 (missing level 1 home game seats)

I wonder how big a gee up Roma received at half time? Not going terrible but not great either in the first half. The goal that put Carlton up just before half time came from a throw in where his effort was terrible.

To give him his due he knew it. Was right below us on the 3rd level and when the goal went through he hung his head.

Much better aggression and determination in the 2nd half by him and started winning some more hit outs that gave out mids a chance.

I wonder how much power Gresh has lost with his kicking after the Achilles injury? The goal he kicked in the 3rd seemed like he went F* it and put his foot through it. Wonder if there is something mental? Terrible injury that one. Hopefully that helps him. He's never been a great kick but he has been kicking it like it's a balloon.

Umpires were just laughable. We rearly do play under a St Kilda rule book. Every week. Not so much the ones the oppo get just hardly any of the same for us.

On Carlton supporters don't be sucked in. Yeah they ain't bad at the moment but as a 35 year member I'll never ever ever forget what they were like. You know it's there and like a cute wounded animal giving sad eyes after the past 30 years you can get sucked in....DON'T. Today was one of the greatest games of football ever because of us beating them. Take that attitude as a Sainta fan and you'll be ok.

Pretty close to the mark, not sure we are there just yet but it's promising

Port next week and Adelaide in Adelaide will be tough. GWS in Sydney also a banana peel.

I'd happily take 4-1 from the next 5.
9-2 at the Bye is still unreal.

You’d have to think that’s still top.

Only Crows for mine, Port are shizen away from home and GWS jump at their own shadows and are mentally shot almost, just going through motions weekly at present.

9-2 is what I'm eyeing at present on exposed form.

Also, watched Vossy's presser, man references his notes far too often so makes one think he really has no idea immediately after a match and is more deer in headlights for explanation of what he just saw, also the AFL link lost about 10 seconds in their upload for the lol.

Lol, looks like a big night out for George , waiting to see some kind of BigFooty presser apologising for his behaviour tomorrow morning...

"I'd like to apologise to my friends, my family and the BigFooty community in general, in particular the St. Kilda board. The footage of myself and Dard in the bathroom stall was inappropriate, not in line with the spirit of the game and I have let those around me down. I didn't realise the extent of the impacts my actions would have, if I had known the general community opinion on performing 'The Bubbler', I almost certainly would have reconsidered my actions."

Lyon's presser was good, one of the journo's saying we had a soft start to the season but stiffer competition in the last two weeks and Lyon biting back noting Freo and Footscray both played finals last year and the Don's are one of the form teams at the moment - but if the journo didn't rate those clubs that was up to him, hahaha
I'd remind anyone who says we've had it soft that we haven't played the Hawks, Roos or Eagles yet and have a percentage a bit under 150.

Conversely, the Cats only needed to feast on the Hawks and the Eagles and then rip an injury depleted Swans apart at the Cattery, to get the the media in a frenzy.

That press conference from Ross was epic. He’s such a ridiculously good operator.

Found it really interesting that he bluntly hosed down excitement about Caminiti in last week’s presser and then just went in to bat for Hill tonight. He seems to know just what messaging his players need to keep them up and about.

George and Old loose ball get will be too busy spooning each other all night to be worried about the fallout

I crap on about this a lot. Was a lot of why I didn’t back in the 5-1 start last year. Sometimes the team just gets tired

Our current system allows us to absorb opposition punches even when our pressure and intensity around the contest are off a little.

It's very comforting because in the past we would give up 4-5 goals in no time before we even realized something was wrong.

Collingwood - We saw it last week. Ross showed the most respect all year and probably went too defensive and didn't flick the switch to offense until too late. A big learning out of that game. Their level of fan support is a massive impact in a finals game if we played them. We have to be 4 goals better to win by under a goal

Melbourne - Gawn, Oliver and Grundy (only the last one because RoMa would struggle to beat both). Break even in the midfield and oh boy that's close for us.

Geelong - Cameron and Hawkins. With them a lot depends on how much it's on their terms. They love filing their cup but still not truly convinced how they go when it's not on their terms.

Sydney - Clash of the systems. They are quite a young side. I really love our list mix compared to theirs which is a bit of a mind f** given that 3 years ago our list mix was close to the worst in the AFL.

The rest - truly believe we have the rest of the comp covered not withstanding losing on any given day

With they way blokes like Philipou, Owens (mids) and Caminiti throw themselves at the aerial contest we are going to have a strong future. Philipou is an 18 year old kid and launches himself without fear. Once he starts marking a few more we’ll decimate some of these lower tier teams

Our 5-1 start last year was so different. No system or structure to our wins, purely just a 15 minute burst of brilliance from the team to pluck a win.

Our % was a good indicator of that, just getting over the line.

2023's 5-1 is significantly better so far. Bring on 9-2 by the Bye Round!

If they had a Captain's Challenge in AFL similar to the NRL then most quarters would take 40 minutes to complete
Woeful performance
