Barrass one is hard, on one hand the potential to bring in talent plus a high pick it tantalising, let's call it the Rowbottom and pick 6 scenario floated. We get a young tough midfielder who is in the perfect age bracket for our list need and add pick 6 to our current haul. Would go a long way to our list rebuild.

On the other hand, we're gutting our defence and experience. He is the key pillar (first picked) in the defensive half, takes the key forward and his intercept marking is probably best in the league*, so we would be relying on young guys to hold up the defence. This could set us back massively, Tex got off the chain against young defenders, Lewis kicked 6 for the hawks, and Curnow destroyed Rotham. This could mean those young defenders never realise their true potential as they get smashed every week. He also brings training standards and experience for the young players to learn off, take that away and things slip.

It's not such an easy decision.

*Intercept marking relies heavily on midfield pressure, to ensure kicking inside 50 is more of a dump kick inside 50 so defenders can pick it off. Our current midfield provides very little pressure, so oppositions have time to lower their eyes and hit up leading targets which takes away from TB's main weapon. He does still manage plenty of intercept marks despite our crab midfield!

It’s only not an easy decision if any offer is overs or significant overs.

It is basically the same as the pick 1 discussion, there is an obvious choice - keep - unless something borderline crazy is offered.

Gov + Hedwards + Bazzo can hold the fort if they stay on field. Also key backs (blockers rather than intercept and rebound types) are often available through trade or 2nd tier comps.

But getting pick 6 and taking Curtain in place of Barrass isn’t particularly appealing. Like for like position without the proven performance, not sure the risk/reward adds up there

This is a pretty irrelevant hill for you to die on old mate.
Hey, I’m happy to move on.
Starting to question if you even come in peace anymore.
People disagree about a whole heap of stuff. I’ve genuinely tried to keep my replies civil (and peaceful), but because I have an opposing view, people aren’t happy.

Not that it’s opposing but you seem to think you have insights on our club - and the B&F is just the most recent one where you are wrong

Not touching the above discussion anymore.

This I agree with, and why I wouldn’t trade him.

There’s be a genuine debate about whether he is the best at his position. Andrews, May, Ballard, Taylor (GWS), Moore, Weitering. There are a lot of very good intercepting defenders in the league.

If I’m picking a key defender, I’m probably taking Moore or Taylor ahead of anyone else.

100%. We bemoan this on our board all the time.

Couple of West Coast posters were asking about Barrass and a move to the Swans.
Theres a few on the Swans board which are willing to pay truckloads to get Barrass to the Swans. Personally I think hes an excellent player, but had his chance a couple of years ago.

How about (Hypothetical and picks as they currently stand.. and considering that GWS are reportedly offering three top 10 picks for pick 1)

Barrass for p7 + Rowbottom (one of our mods thinks a good idea) - Rowbottom 22yo, 81 games, 9 clearances and 17 contested possessions in his last game
With the Salary cap you save offer Himmelberg a massive contract to replace Barrass and ensure GWS get a 1st round compo pick
Trade p1 for GWS p5,6 & 8
Trade p19 for TDK
Trade p36 for Zac Fisher
Trade p38 for Paddy Dow (you can chuck in p55 & 57 to sweeten any deals)

So you get
draft p5,6,7 & 8
Get Himmelberg - a good tall swingman
TDK a 24yo potentially good ruck fwd
Zac Fisher a 25yo WA boy small fwd 100 gamer
Paddy Dow a former p3 young big bodied midfielder
Rowbottom a 22yo very good midfielder

and you give
p1 & Barrass

All thanks to Carltons (Soss) terrible list mgt and Sydney teams paying overs
I like the trade for the most part...really rate Rowbum but Dow can be turned into a pick in the 30's or a decent player (Sheldrick)

I don’t even pretend to have any insight into your club.

Anything I mention about your club is 100% based on what I’ve read here.

I didn’t introduce the B&F discussion, nor did I discuss how yours works, or anything of the sort.

I did point out Andrews has never polled well top 3 in my clubs B&F, and tried to highlight B&F has little bearing on AA status.

That point appears to have been missed.

Worpel won Hawthorn’s B&F one year.

Mitch Robinson was joint winner of ours one year.

It’s a great club award, but it’s not a high or clear metric to point to the value of a player in every circumstance.

Barrass going would signal need for Curtin but they are likely to fall in no-mans land for our draft picks- demanding Swans fill that void for us. Could be win win but I am sentimental and would prefer to keep Tom

What is it that keeps you so invested in WC, have the posters on the Brisbane forum not been kind to you?

Maybe we trade Barass for Buller straight up. So so happy we didn’t find a way to open another list spot before ruling Nic Nat out 4 days later

Maybe I'm missing something but wasn't our second mid-season draft pick after Sydney's pick for Buller? That is, we had no chance at him anyway?
