I reckon that was the closest thing to a finals intensity game we've played all year. Despite the loss, the youngsters in the team probably got more out of that game than most this season.

Credit to the Dogs, they did their homework and knew if we don't win the clearances we don't win, so the minute we got in front they made sure their umps didn't even allow us the chance to win a clearance until they were firmly back in control.

Fyfe was poor today, if his foot injury is hampering him just give him a rest and play Erasmus. Ras will get experience and Fyfe will hopefully get better. If Fyfe's foot is not what is causing his continued poor form he is hardly worth a game.

Cox was very disappointing today. Always looks quite casual which is fine if he is going OK but it looks horrible if he is getting beaten like today.

Darcy was good, Walters good, Amiss is a star. Johnson is going to be a very good player and should play every game for the remainder of the season.

Overall another disappointing result to go with some other stuff ups. When we are on song we are a reasonable team but we need to eliminate our occasional very poor games to progress.

Our midfield doesn’t kick enough goals and our back line lose too many one on ones. Crazy they amount of times it went to a forward / defender 1 on 1 and we lost. Our defenders are quite s**t.
Then whose fault is that? The players?

The coach?

The board?

The recruiting staff?

Or a mixture of everyone?

You look at freos best 23. On the day it's good.

But my biggest concern is this.

The backline, specifically the tall defenders. We lose either one of Alex Pearce or Brennan cox, we are stuffed.

We lose Sean Darcy to injury, we can throw a Reidy or Knobel to fill in for a game or 2 to ruck 50 percent of the game. Luke Jackson can ruck the other 50 percent.

Talls up forward.... Jackson, Amiss, Traecy, Sturt are all 192 cm or taller.

Compare that to our 2012-15 finals squad. McPharlin, Dawson and Michael Johnson as tall defenders. One can go down with injury and our still had 2 left. Silvagni was backup too.

Sandilands was main ruckman. But Jono Griffin and Zac Clarke were solid.

Pav was double teamedor triple teamed every bloody week and had no 2nd tall to help him which should be a bloody crime in itself.

Fortunately Jye Amiss won't have a similar fate of being triple teamed each week

Just an inexperienced team running out of puff. Need the bigger mids to get to 50+ games. Pretty simple. No point in melting too hard, we just aren't ready and won't be for 2-3 more years. People have unrealistic expectations on what we should be doing this year.

Look at who we beat ... Hawthorn, Sydney, Essendon ... they are all teams where the prime movers are in the low 180cm range, just like us. So we match up well. Geelong minus Danger/Guthrie/Duncan and Melbourne minus Oliver.

We have lost to teams like North, Brisbane, GWS, Richmond, Dogs that have big units in the midfield like LDU, Dunkley, Green, Taranto, Bont (plus a few more per side). Jackson was MIA today (crook?), Fyfe is cooked, Chapman injured, NOD out of sorts, Johnson a greenhorn and Erasmus even moreso. There's only so much Serong and Brayshaw can do at their size.

The main issue for me is how poorly we start basically every game. Buckley said he was surprised how quiet and introverted the group was before the Melbourne game, and to me it is obvious that they are never fired up enough to start a game, and not doing anything to rectify it.
Why are we ALWAYS inexperienced? How many times have I heard that over the past 26 years!

lol, I just watched Howe go up way too early in a marking contest, just get a hand to it and no call. Not even a comment from anyone that it would even be possible that might be a free.
Yep that was 100% the wrong call against Ryan. Not one of those 'judgement' frees to feel aggrieved about, 100% the wrong call that never ever gets paid.

Umps handed them the clearance, then handed them the shot at goal. Then handed them the next clearance that lead to a goal. Then ignored exactly the same hold on Treacy allowing them to win the next clearance too and kick three in a row. Then we gave up and let them steamroll us.

Would the club be bold enough to chase a proven coach like Hardwick we’ve done it before, i don’t see it with JLo.
See I am torn here.

Because I really do want Justin Longmuir to succeed here.

I have said this, I don't expect to get a Premiership 🏅 medals under the coaching of Justin Longmuir. He is good enough to give us finals for 3 or 4 years in a row.

It would be nice for a former dockers player to get us success.

He will forever be remembered as the 1st dockers player to coach us to a finals win.

Part of why it was such an infuriating loss. WE had all the momentum. The umps handed that straight back to the dogs to help them get three quick ones. They didn't earn the momentum back. They got gifted it. And our team does not feel mentally strong enough to recover from that position.

You may be right. Next year will be the real test when this year's squad get some games into them and together though.

I still back JL from here, its a handful of players I'm concerned about.

Tell you what, I find it particularly galling to watch JUH chopping up (and he always seems to look good against us).

Classic AFL situation of pulling the ladder up once the Victorian team has already enjoyed the advantage. To mix my metaphors, the Dogs get to benefit from that horse bolting for the next decade while we get the gate slammed on Mitch Edwards this year.

Too many kids in key roles.

We just aren’t ripe yet.
Sorry but this excuse of too many kids in the team is wearing 🥊 thin on me.

I just tolerated a 6 year period of not making finals from 2016-21.

Yep that Is 6 years in a row of no finals.

If we spent 6 years in a row of now finals in a rebuild... Those 18-21 year Olds should be in their prime as 24-27 year Olds.

Again.... Shall I remind you lot of Fremantle's finals history between 1995-2023?

Only made finals in 2003, 2006, 2010, 2012-5 and 2022.

That's 8 years of finals out of 29. Not to mention only 7 finals wins in 28 years. That's not great.

I could tolerate 8 years of finals in a 30 year period. But bloody hell, we need a period of making finals for 2 years in a row at least twice or 3 times.
