Player Watch Pick #23 (2019) - Dylan Williams

Dylan's manager speaking on AFL's Gettable podcast 12/7/23 said that he expects Dylan to sign on with Port and for it to be an easy deal to complete.
Thanks for that. Just had a listen. One thing that did prick my ears up was that because he was delisted and then re-rookied, it means he is essentially a free agent for life whenever he comes out of contract.

Sounds like they're working through a new contract for Dylan atm. Awesome news.

Dyl's my man!!

I tried hard getting him a longer contract, but we were happy to settle for two years and increased dollars in the end. Been a great year with Dylie, we have put in the hard yards, and got the rewards.

This has been my most successful "Buddy-year" to date. I am looking forward to helping another player on the chopping block next year! :D

Great story - came with a load of natural talent but it all looked to be early bloom and false promise. Had him pegged as someone that would go to the country leagues and kick a hundred goals a year on talent alone. First game for us was so gassed and so far off the pace that no reasonable observer would have had him playing more than a handful of games. And then they rolled him to a half back flank in what we all thought would be a slow and ungracious death in the magoos. Delisted, rerookied because some astute observer still saw something in him, and then finally given a second chance in the big league. And hasn’t he grabbed it. A sure mark, football nous, sublime left foot, and with the angles all opening up when he has ball in hand. Not sure that I have ever seen a bigger turn around in a footballer

I so desperately want him to transition back to the forward line and replace either DBJ or Mc Cheese it's where he belongs.
Why? His strength has shown to be his reading of the play, intercept marking and clean use out of the d50.

Foot speed remains an issue, he can’t play the pressure role we expect from small forwards as a result.

Leave him where he is.

Agreed - but there is a temptation. If we had a Blight like coach and we made a grand final (two pretty big ifs), he would be the sort you might throw forward to turn a game. Has a cool head and a touch of genius - and has just turned 22

People remark about his lack of pace

Like with soccer, the first few steps are in your head.

He has great anticipation and high accounts for him not being super quick

You need guys with his skill set, I love him
I agree, his supposed "lack of pace" is hardly ever noticeable. He makes up for it with his quick mind, his anticipation, and faster reaction. I thought he would be a liability in defence ... he has been the total opposite!
