Dow and Kemp are interesting case studies.

Both have improved and do a lot of good things, but both are good for a few glaring errors a game that cost goals.

Dow - Done some really nice things and overall has been a good fill in, but in each of his 3 games it seems the pace is too much for him in the first quarter and he's been caught HTB and turned the ball over by foot when under pressure. But then he's settled, the game slows down and he gets better as the game goes on.

Kemp - Has been strong with his intercept marking and his disposal has generally been pretty solid. But in pretty much every game he loses a few aerial contests where you just think he should have done better and been able to spoil the ball. Quite often he doesn't put any body contact on the forward...I think he purposely stands off them to try to defend by leaping at the ball himself but when it doesn't work it looks bad.
Kemp is still on a steep learning curve, he gets in scenarios where he still has think about it- it’s not automatic- that will come. He’s also outsized a lot of the time and needs a few steps to be able to leap to get to the height to compete. Does get lost on occasion but that happens if your not Weiters or Newman.
Dow was a victim (along with a few others) of a Crippa hospital handpass early on, heat comes on he gets better, it’s not the game slowing, he stops thinking & just starts playing.

He is not better than Sticks, SOS, Diesel, Doull, etc.

If he plays at this level for a few more years, maybe, maybe then you can mount an argument.
True but we all have to give Charlie credit. He was a prize d***head in his draft year, when he refused a breath test. In his first years at Carlton he was immature and unreliable. Then he had 18 months off to recover from a self induced knee cap injury. Many were then forecasting the effective end of him as a top ranking AFL player. BUT to his credit he has bounced back and gone from Strength to Strength. Thankfully he is now maturing as a player and, importantly, as a person. Hopefully his best years are ahead of him. GO CHARLIE.

Some highlights from the Essington board, in case you're wondering how they've taken the 20 goal loss to Gee Dub:

"Buried dug up cream pied then buried again"

"It seemed not that long ago when we beat Carlton there was a feeling that we were going somewhere whereas Carlton were capitulating and there was something inherently wrong with their club."

"I started to barack for GWS at quarter time, and enjoyed this game very much."

"I'm so glad I stop paying for a membership ages ago, none of my hard earn goes towards these peahearts."

"This is a level below Essington. Messington."

Oh, I give him plenty of credit. It's no slight against him saying those players are better than him.

Amazing win and love the stadium.

However, when 75% of the crows sits in direct sunlight all game then it nearly becomes a health hazard.

The problem is when you play at night the ball becomes a cake of soap.

Such a shame because it should be a great ground to watch footy.

The 4pm start Vs the Lions the other week seems to be the way to go.

First time I have seen Charlie in the flesh for a long time and it was well worth it.

Couldn’t agree more. They’re both providing value but we need them both to keep improving.

Too often Dow gets tackled when he has had no prior opportunity so he could choose to just hold it in and “make an attempt” to get rid of it. But instead he lets it spill out to the opposition and they run off with it. It does my head in.

But what I did like from Dow today was his marking. Took some important marks when he had to step up in critical moments. A sign of growing confidence.

Up and down game and it should have been all over at 3 quarter time but still we found a way to win.

Still lots to love about today's game, but it was great hearing Charlie talk about the team practising close games and him going back to defence at training.

Over the moon that we have finals locked in, I don't think I could have handled a repeat of last year. Now I can't wait to see what the boys can do in finals, especially Cripps and Charlie..those 2 are big game players and made for finals!

Just finished watching on delay because of commitments with my mum, but a few thoughts;

● The last two weeks are definitely games we would have lost in the past and heads would have dropped. This shows progress and growth within the team especially with such a large injury list to key players

● Harry will be better for the run out there. Knee injuries always take a few games to get back to the form the player was in prior to injury. Hopefully perfect timing for finals

●Dow just keeps improving. I think if he didn't step up in the 2nd and 3rd quarter we may be seeing a different result even with Charlie being Charlie. Hewitt was doing the best he could to lift the team but Cripps was the walking wounded and Docherty just isn't a midfielder in my opinion. (Too many poor kicks because he is rushing and his first thought is protecting our back half which allows his opponents to attack the ball and win the clearance. He is an All Australian Half Back, I wish we played him there). Paddy is now thinking ground wide not just about getting clearances and moving it forward, i think the marks he is taking around the ground is showing that, especially in the defensive half.

However Paddy's next step in development for me is playing 4 quarters at the level he does for three. That will be what keeps him in the team. At this point Hewitt isn't going to get dropped so I think when everyone is fit he pushes out Kennedy purely because having to many of the same type of midfielder doesnt work, as was seen at the start of the year. But.... this only happens if he can play 4 quarters otherwise he is sub for me.

● First Quarter speaks for itself and I don't think any player can walk away from it without criticism so I think we eliminate it from the discussion. The rest of the game had good moments and poor moments but the best part was the team work, the will to pull it over the line for the win even tho it was not a great game.

●If Weitering and Newman had played the whole year as they have for the last 9 weeks they would be locks for AA. They were amazing again.

●Cunningham needs to do more. He has some great assets but he also doesnt get involved enough. He doesnt need 15-20 disposals at Half forward to be impactful but he needs to make his disposals count. He definitely needs to try and learn from Martin because he could make that Half Forward role his own

● And finally, Charlie is just a matured player now and a star. If he continues his career the way he is at the moment he will be one of great forwards people talk about e.g Buddy and Fev in recent history.

On to next week and love the belief we have at the moment ❤️

Kemp has a bad habit of contesting in a rather pointless fashion. He ain’t punching, he ain’t marking, he’s just jumping around with his palms out to no real effect.

But he’s still in the best 22 that WILL be playing finals 🥹

I mean I can mount any argument I want. I don’t recall enough of Doull.

Sticks I loved but he was nothing on Charlie at his best. Nothing. Sticks was never in the convo for best player in the afl. Diesel was not at his best in the 4 years he played with us. Neither was Judd - despite the lucky Brownlow.

Charlie is the most talented player we have had. He’s more talented than Kouta and Fev- the two most talented I’ve seen. He’s out of this world good. His year this year reminds me of Kouta in 2000. But better. And I LOVED Kouta.

His 60m drill passes inside 50 are unmatched in my lifetime by any player I’ve ever seen. Any club.

He should win the aFL MVP this season. He’s the best player in the afl.

He has finally matched talent with an ability to stay injury free. He had a full preseason this year and clearly picked up a yard on last year. Which has translated into this incredible season.

Must be closing in on top 5 champion player rating for the year so far. Amazing for a forward.

I don’t think any Carlton player I’ve seen has had a better year.

Just my opinion.
