What a trade haul

What other spuds can we shake loose?

Shannon Hurn?
Drew Petrie?
Scott Gumbleton?

We're winning this trade period fellas 😤😤

Exactly. Bottom line question. Would you swap Gresh for a McKercher, Sanders or other top quality mid? With Shiel thrown in for a year as a packet of chips and cap room for the 2024 free agency market.

Gresham and our first round pick. Not just Gresham and Shiel comes in to dump salary and probably plays most games despite not being very good or part of the future.

Gresham is not a great kick seems to be the knock.....then chase Shiel and Dow who are probably the two most renowned bad kicks in footy. That's borderline trolling.

Look, who really knows? Possibly they are working on something in addition to this to get further up?
And if we cant get to 4 or close, then we've still got the back to back 12 and 13 to use on those picks you mentioned. Gives us an extra first rounder. Either way, Gresh appears to want to go, so we have to get the best deal for him.

Honestly think it's us that want to lose players for FRDPs to save face again.

How do you still not understand that the main point of the deal is to get the first round pick. Getting Shiel is just a steak-knives

I ****ing love these trade re-caps…

"In years to come, the 2013 Trade Period will be seen as the moment the Saints began their climb."

The 2013 Trade Period was when St Kilda’s list re-shaping truly began to take full effect.

Although it was considered controversial at the time, trading Ben McEvoy for Shane Savage and pick no.17 (which later became 18 and was used on Luke Dunstan), is now widely seen as a win-win for both Hawthorn and St Kilda.

Gresham might want to leave, so what would you have us do? Let him go for a pick in the second round? If he’s committed to going then we have to do what we can to get the best deal possible. If we force a trade I seriously doubt we get close to pick 13.

This deal looks like the best option.

Also, Dow is a cheap option that ticks a few boxes and still might have significant development left in him. It makes sense to pick him up.

From this trade period onwards, St Kilda’s direction was unequivocal. Build from the draft was the mantra, with the highly respected and experienced Alan Richardson employed to help accelerate this process.

'We're in no denial about where our list is at," Ameet Bains told AFL Trade Radio at the time.

"We need to be quite aggressive and creative to get our club up towards the top end of the table. We've got a very measured and strategic approach to how we might achieve that and this is one part of that.

NEK MINNIT

We trade out our first and second rounders for Carlisle and Freeman, then Steele then Logan Austin.

It's almost like we didn't have a plan at all. Reminds me of say… bringing in Hill, Jones, Howard & Hannebery… then realising there's not enough young talent on the list so we get rid of Gresham, Billings, Coffield & Clark for picks.

And if you turn Gresham into Hunter Clark or Coffield or Gresham or even Howard. You put 5 years of development into standing still. Churning through players has hardly moved us forward. Freaking out about what’s happening in years time is jumping at shadows. Just build a competitive list and don’t worry about anything else. We need high end not bulk turnover.
We desperately need a young quality mid and Gresham isn’t the guy, he’s also driving the move we’re just working it to our advantage. Tassie coming into the comp is a factor, we need to have the core of a good young team when that happens.

Makes me cringe every time, mostly because of how convinced I was about that last paragraph. That’s the only thing about letting good players go for draft picks that aren’t top 5-10. Yeah it sounds good to have pick 13 but then the years go by and you end up getting nothing from it. Still think I’d rather keep the good player then try to replace him with a draft pick in the hope that they become a good player.

Gresham isn't the guy, neither is Max King.
So how are you going to get this "young quality mid"?

Wow - I didn't know Ameet Bains was involved in this as well. Winmar2Lockett will have me over a barrel for referring to these non-facts

First off let’s be honest gresham isn’t our first choice anything these days and he’s a restricted free agent who wants out, so that’s what we’re working with. Clearly from reports we’re looking at what we’ll receive if he leaves and how we can maximise the return. The mooted essendon deal if it comes off is a very good deal Imo. That gives us two bites in the first round and the ability to perhaps move up to where this years best mids will land.

Gold Coast #4 = 2,034

St Kilda #12 = 1,268
Theoretical #13 = 1,212

Total of #12 and #13 = 2,480
(Allowing for one pick movement lower due to matching, this becomes 2,373)

That is more points than any other team could reasonably offer (with the exception of GWS who might offer both #6 and #15 for a two pick upgrade, they have a history of doing this - see Cadman last year - whether they do it again??).

So, yeah.
That might be the end game.

#4 definitely gets Sanders, and one of McKercher or Duursma you’d think.

Plus GC will have all these later picks that they cannot use.
They might have value to someone.
I'm praying this Shiel thing is part of operation get Duursma. Kid looks unbelievable

Shiel's clearance work reminds me of Saddam's Bagdad artillery spray

We've seen the effect of poor disposal by foot especially into F50 in a final, and yet we're going after renowned butchers.

We aren't 'going after' Shiel.

He's a salary dump for the Bombers. The deal would help them clear 500-700k extra in their cap to front load some contracts and go again in next year's FA pool.

If it was James Stewart on the same contract we'd be talking about him instead.

Some might argue at the margins & fair enough - but logic - like it!

Some might not agree but looks like SoS and Gubby are trying to go left field and think laterally (Gringo I hear you re our track record!) but we don’t try and improve we are dead in the water!

Not an exact quote but RTB said we don’t want to leave Owens, NAS, Windy and Pou stranded - we want to surround them with young quality to build something that can compete for silverware - like it!!!

Also we don't wanna break em like we did luke ball

We need to nurture them. They're amazing young prospects.

He's depth at Sandy on this year's form. Worse than Bytel.
The main thing to look at is Gresham is leaving , do we do nothing and get a 30s round pick for him or pay for a another 1st round pick for taking on a player for one year who could actually play some football.

It will be a heist if we could pull it off because we could actually use those picks to go after a supposedly elite mid higher in the draft.

Whatever happens they will be attempting to fix our midfield.

This is it

Club last 12 months had got most things right

Let’s trust them

Surely this isn't accurate?

Why would we do a deal to take on Shiels salary to get a first round compo for Gresh only to give them a high end pick?

FMD, the media are not thinking this through...

Why would we let Gresh go and then trade the compo pick for Shiel?

Pick 31 would be more than enough for Shiel given his age, injuries and contract.
