Thats admittedly a glass 1/4 full worst case view, still 2 weeks to go of trade period

My 3/4 glass full approach:

Had a decent crack at possibly the best player in the league
Didn’t overpay for a backup forward in Chol
Didn’t overpay for a player coming off a second knee reco
Perhaps not overpaying for a 5-6 pick upgrade in what is a shallow draft
Secured a reasonable swingman as depth

Think we probably have a few irons in the fire next week, if not, happy to take a few picks to the draft.

I mean, we’d have pick 6 instead of pick 9 if we didnt..

pick 6 couldve really tempted the dees to actually let Oliver go.. cause picks 5 and 6 with our f1 and dees pick 15 wouldve been very tempting to WC as a swap for pick 1..

Effectively taking $1million dollars out of the dees chocked to the brim salary cap and replacing it with Reid on a much smaller draftees salary..

I thought Melbourne's president said the club didn't speak to anyone about trading Oliver so maybe we should have just played like 2020 and get pick 1.......

They held a meeting the night the story broke..

they couldve immediately come straight out and quashed the rumours and said “this is utterly ridiculous, Oliver’s going nowhere”.. they didnt.. they spent the night discussing all options and possibilities.

what do you actually think was discussed at that meeting..

its pretty obvious that..

wouldve been discussed at length..

and the immediate conclusion wouldve been..

”they have pick 9, their f1, some decent seconds, and yes, we can work mcadam into the deal.. but thats unfortunately not enough to absolutely guarantee we can make a deal to grab pick 1 from WC”.

so keeping Oliver would've been the ultimate end to the discussion.

I reckon if the dees believed they couldve guaranteed they got pick 1, and thus reid, they’d have decided to part part with oliver the other night.. and his 7million dollar 7 year contract.

This is the risk for the dees..

if the relationship between oliver and the club doesnt end up coming good and instead turns back to Oliver being pissed off at the medico/fitness staff or simply ignoring them as he doesnt trust them.. being resentful because the club is keeping tabs on him.. the club getting pissed off at him.. and another blow up occurring…

then they really are fxxked,,

they will have to let him walk and his value will plummet.

at this point it could go either way..

They’ve still left the door wide open to trade him.
They just said Oliver hasn’t requested a trade.
The club hasn’t discussed it with another club.
Both things can still change (albeit unlikely now)

Oliver will probably be traded to a victorian club next trade season. Its fairly obvious they would have traded him for the right deal this year. Maybe we dodged a bullet if he wouldn't have seen out his contract.
