A few players very stiff to be left out for Zak Jones, why is he still playing AFL footy?

I usually wait for the emotions to settle before posting but this game was a disaster. They were there for the taking but then the rain came down and we forgot how to play.

Granted, we don’t play a lot of wet weather footy but how can we expect to win these games by trying to execute tough handballs under pressure? So many times we’d handball and try to chain possessions only to turn it over. We’d thump the ball down the line when right on the boundary and put it out of bounds. We’d try a dummy then get the kick smothered. The weather didn’t equalise the skill level, it dropped ours even lower.

One goal in two and a half quarters is embarrassing, even in the wet. Seems we can’t score much in any conditions.

Phillipou was good, the rest were ordinary. Might have seen the last of a few.

The good:

- Phillipou. Something special may be building.

The bad:

- Everything else.

39 points in the wet for a team that struggles to kick 60 under a roof sounds about right.

Not overly fussed about wins TBH, I just don’t want to get blown out for the rest of the year.

AUTOPSY

Our players
in the wet were in main poorer than the Crows were.

Our coaches went with numbers at the ball. Whereas the Crows having more on the outside worked to their advantage.

So the Crows players and Coaching were both better.

Pou a big plus.

Sharman in the first quarter was excellent, but then the supply dried up. Though he was still working and contesting including running up the ground.

Owens. Time to do a Pou and drop him to Sandy so he can run back into form.

We really seemed to lack intensity and effort after quarter time. A few can hold their heads up - Pou, Nasiah, Marshall, Paton when he came on, Battle, Wilkie, Byrnes. But so many players just didn't get into the game at all.

It's understandable, Adelaide probably had more to play for after our big win last week, but with 6 games to go it feels like the air has been taken out of the season now. Think it could be a real slog to the finish line.

Main positive was Pou who was electric at times, Sharman looked good early, Byrnes I thought was really solid again.

A game like that you'd love a bull in the midfield just winning hard balls and clearances.

Well, it's cue in the rack time folks.

Im not disappointed by the loss its the lack of physicality by so many of our players in wet weather footy eg Bonner, Henry, Shoenmaker, Wilson etc.

Why are we year after year seeing so many of our blokes getting out muscled. The new gym at Moorabbin must be for playing rap music and busting moves, because it is definitely not for our blokes to develop professional physiques.

As far as being a good running team that is only evident when it suits them. The other thing wet weather footy does is expose teams with poor skills and ours remain 2nd rate.

Entries seemed too shallow, the best ones were the ones that were shots that trickled out of bounds. And the forwards didnt do enough to lock it in.

Dominated contested ball
Had less turnovers
Had more intercept possessions
+23 in marks
+6 free kicks

All that to lose inside 50s by 13 because we let them out too easy

Just felt like a strange game once the conditions changed.

Didn’t learn anything that we didn’t already know.

We need a second ruck, and King healthy in our front half to free Owens up to play his natural role which is an inside, hunting midfielder.

Pou is our most talented midfielder already.

Bonner isn’t up to AFL footy.

Membrey is done.

The body of work from this season tells us that. Last week was enjoyable and a sign of the capability of our younger players but our midfield lacks significantly.

The kids have a ways to go before they’re regular consistent AFL level players.

We’ll be ok, just give it time
