List Mgmt. List Management 2024-25

Good call '54, we have had almost no luck with tall draftees over the Hinkley years. As I have posted before Todd Marshall is about the only 195cm + player who has gone on with it and even he looks to have a limited future.

McCallum, Scully and Kyle Marshall are all out of contract at the end of 2024.

That’s because as a club we’ve refused to invest in this position at the draft. It’s not luck, it’s poor list management for the past 15 years.

All our key defenders are always pick 40+ at best and the odds of them becoming quality AFL defenders is very limited from the start. It’s no surprise we cycle through them like Ken does with his coke.

The fact Clurey remains the highest draft pick spent on a key defender on our list shows how poor our list management has been in this space. We haven’t used a first round pick on a key defender since Chaplin in 2003. 21 years….

When we refuse to spend first or second round picks to get these players, we’re stuck with cycling through the likes of McCullum, Grundy, Pasini, Skinner, Marshall etc. It’s not a surprise they don’t make it.

What we are lucky with is that we managed to snag Aliir at the trade table and even BZT. As we sure as hell haven’t drafted to fill those positions otherwise in the last 15+ years.

I wouldn't mind taking a swing at Harry O'Farrell as a KPD around pick 25-35 if we get a chance. Seems like there could be something there.

It's often talked about the need to grab KPFs with top 10 picks but it's been a while since I've actually looked at the list.

Almost all of the dominant key forwards have been first round picks, most of them top 10 picks. With the exception of Curnow it becomes obvious even as you only move to late first round the quality/consistency of the KPF bunch drops off quickly.

Hogan (mini-draft i.e. top 2 pick), Cameron (underage selection), Darcy (2), Kings (4 and 6), Kennedy (4), Amiss (8), Naughton (9), Daniher (10), McKay (10), Lynch (11), Curnow (pick 12), Marshall (16), Himmelberg (16), Georgiades (18)

There are some gems to be found: Oscar Allen (21), Mihocek (RD), Ben Brown (47), Waterman (77), Treacy (RD), Larkey (73), Mitch Lewis (76), Finlayson (85) - but even of those players most of them also have their limitations. Treacy and Allen probably the only two you'd be comfortable calling 'genuine star' KPFs.

So we often criticise Port for not developing KPFs, but it really should be more of a matter of criticising our list management for not getting their hands on more top 10 picks, and when they have those picks grabbing the best available KPF.

However, KPD development is fair enough to criticise Port for as there are a raft of really good KPDs taken with late picks: Andrews (61), Barrass (43), Collins (55), Wilkie (RD), Sam Taylor (28), Butts (RD), Pearce (37), Melican (RD), Henry (RD).

I am not sure I entirely agree with this sentiment btw but I get where you are coming from.

Collingwood won a flag last year with Elliot, McCreery, Hill and Ginnivan who are all below 190cm
Pies increased their offer to Richards

So we shouldn’t recruit a small forward now as they will be too short in 30 years?
Draft a KPF this year. In 30 years from now he will be the size of the "small" forwards in that era (the "KPPs" will all be 7 footers then).

Our 2024 draftee at 38yo may be a trifle old by then though!

We should be trying to get these Ins this trade period

Perryman is basicaly going to collingwood so we can eliminate him

In:
Matt owies
Joe Richards
Jack Lukosious
Draft Picks for houston (most likely first round this year and a F2)
Other pick swaps involved in other deals

From a pure trade point of view this looks ok, we bolster our small forward stocks and can delist evans and narkle and not play McEntee in our AFL side, and we bring in a mobile key forward who is a great set shot.

KPPs and talls - beyond this thread but the issue is the volume coming through and where, in the draft, they get selected. It’s rare that any make it outside the first round or other circumstances. It’s all well and good to say port can’t develop them and haven’t taken them early. But the players need to be available.

so the premiers typically are top three in ground ball gets and top six for scores for and against. We also need some on field leadership and toughness.

We should be chasing Taylor Adams and/or Luke Parker hard. They’ll give us a tough centre edge and come from hardened finals systems.

If Richards and Perryman don’t work out, we need to find some hardened, tough, fast outside players that can cover our weaknesses in small forwards, half forwards and wings.

They also need to be worthy of going early. Reaching for a KPP to fill a need is a sure fire way to waste a good selection.

Some drafts are strong KPP drafts and worth investing a first rounder on. From the sounds of things though, this is a midfielders/flankers draft and probably the way we should be going.

Is Garcia a realistic chance,? He's superior to Richards.
I disagree. Garcia is a Midfielder who was being played out of position as a high half forward by bevo, bevo is almost as stupid as donuts.

Richards is a pure small forward with much better forward craft

He fits our need much more.

I'm thinking if Hinkley is here next year, we put an embargo on recruiting (other than Lukosius who we are now committed to) and deal only in out goings, like Houston and Soldo. And we only accept draft picks for them.

No more quick fixes or sugar hits, he sails or sinks on what he has at his disposal.

Cumming and Perryman have already done their bit for the cause.

Are we better brining in a mid and playing Rozee more forward or bringing in a forward?

I've been thinking a lot this week about Heeney and how he might be the model we should be using for Rozee. More forward.

He’s definitely more suited forward and an intelligent coach would know this & use his speed & agility in 1 v 1 situations as much as possible. I can’t think of too many defenders that would have the pace to keep up with him over 15-20 metres. He’s also a very reliable kick at goal, so it’s a no brainer in my opinion.

I’d personally like to see Connor rotate with JHF through the middle, in a 70-80/20-30 % capacity, with JHF predominantly playing on-ball. But with the hillbilly grifter still glued to the chair I expect normal programming to resume in March next year.

You lose me at intelligent coach. Don't think there is much intellect at Port especially when it comes to the forward line.

Any update on Perryman yet? I want this to be done and over with already.

Just tell yourself he picked Collingwood, so when he does you can think, I already knew that.

Houston to North for pick 2 and future 1st aye? 😏
Well I was more referring to Cumming going to across with increased offer. Peeryman to Pies with bigger offer, Pies offering more to keep Richards.

In relation to Houston pick 2 alone I’d snatch it. Pick 10 I’d want another first round pick.

People can’t talk him more down all they like, he’s a magnificent player and worth it, North would be a good fit, they will surely rise next year and beyond.

Rozee and Heeney very different players. Heeney is a key marking target, and swans do everything to get him 1 on 1 cause he is that bloody good.

Rozee absolutely would make a great half forward, with speed and spread - that gets in the middle from time to time.

I reckon Bergman would be worth a shot in the middle (not the wing). And could provide a marking target like how the swans use Heeney
