Barely justifies a response, but:

1. Key position players are clearly under-rated by player ratings. Of the genuine marking target key forwards, Coleman Medal winner Hogan was the top rated key forward in 2024, be he is rated around 70th overall in the player ratings.

2. Of key position players at Richmond, nobody has rated higher in a season than Balta in 2021 and 2023, bar Tom Lynch, who is 32. To get rid of Balta on this basis would be to unload our highest rated key position player under the age of 32.

3. Balta missed 4 matches in 2024. Based on average votes per game he would likely be elevated. In any event he was forced by injury to play most of the time in a totally makeshift forward line being served by a VFL level midfield.

4. The reason they don't know where to play Balta is because he is very strong as a key defender, shows good promise as a second ruckman and has some ability forward which the club has been compelled to explore. He will play as a key defender who gets swung into other positions and roles as required, making him more useful than other key defenders with similar acumen in that role.

5. This presumes Richmond will finish 18th in 2025. This is not a safe prediction. It also assumes the player selected at pick 2 would automatically be of more use to Richmond than Noah Balta. Teams require structure, not just endless recruitment of high end talent.

6. Eh? Taranto is 2 years into a 7 year deal, has been excellent value for the club so far, including winning a best & fairest. Hopper is 2 years into a 7 year deal and has not had a good run at it due to injuries. Neither contract is a huge millstone for Richmond. The bulk of them will be paid up before they ever cause the club problems.

7. Balta has played 49 of Richmond's last 53 matches. Basically the same as his lovechild Rozee for Port Adelaide. Injury prone, lol.

Forgetting all the specifics of Balta and his projected value to Richmond, Kane Cornes thinking he can casually manage Richmond's list better than 3 flag list manager Blair Hartley tells us all we need to know about this situation.

Yeah all good, was just going on what they were saying yesterday, Rosa felt like they would lose pick 9 on kako anyway so wanted to get an extra pick in this year's draft. So sacrifcing 14 instead of 9 would still net them an extra pick this year from a trade.

yeah, still we give them a heap of later picks, they get the points and we have better picks and can give Essendon back something switching futures as the draft heads down the order..

I’d be extremely happy if we had 5 or 6 picks inside the top 30 and use the later picks for deals on players like Owies, Membrey, Parfitt and Ross. I am unsure if any other than Ross are delisted free agents.

We are most likely going to get smashed most weeks next year but if we could have Membrey helping Lynch and the young kids up forward , Owies is a quality small forward and Parfit and Ross just to help the depth in the midfield given Hopper and Prestia have had injury issues it can’t be a bad thing can it.

It doesn’t mean Ross and Parfit have to play 22 games they are there for depth and experience.

According to Leppitsch it sounded like Collingwood thought they would just walk in and take pick 13 as part of the Noble deal. Now GC have realised other clubs want it, the trade may not happen.

Correct me if I’m wrong …. but it sounds like if a bid comes at let’s say pick-7 for Kako, Bombers can then trade out their pick-9 in live trading, match points for Kako, then try to trade back in.

And clubs can’t swap back the same picks they’ve already traded. However, we could do something like:

Trade a few later picks and an F2 for pick-9. Then when it gets to our pick-14, we trade that to Bombers for a Bomber’s F1.

So net result is:

Out : 14, F2 and later picks.

In: 9, F1

So we greatly improve our draft hand, and Bombers get Kako and another gun in this year’s draft.

I’m pretty sure that’s all within the rules, but perhaps someone can clarify?

No, once a bid has come in, the club that has to match or decline and is not able to trade out any picks until after that decision is made (match or decline). They can only live trade ahead of the bid. If Essendon get intel that a bid is coming at pick 7, they might wait to pick 6 while it is still in progress, so will then look to trade it out but once that bid is official Essendon cannot do any pick trading until after that pick is finalised.
