Geelong Cats is set to regain Shelley Scott and Kate Kenny for this Sunday'smust-win clash against Brisbane, with the forward duo expected to beavailable for selection.

Kenny was ruled out of the Week 7 match against Richmond with an ankle complaint, while Shelley Scott – who is in line to play her 75th AFLW game –missed the match with illness.

“It was unfortunate to lose Shelley and Kate for last week’s game, but we’re optimistic both will be back this weekend to take on Brisbane,” Geelong Cats Assistant General Manager of Football Brett Johnson said.

“It will be a big occasion for Shelley, becoming the first Cat to reach 75 AFLW games, so we’re looking forward to her being back and celebrating the milestone.”
Rachel Kearns has entered the AFL's concussion protocols following a head clash in the second quarter against the Tigers and will miss Sunday’s game against Brisbane.

The Cats are optimistic Chloe Scheer will play an on-field role in the Cats’ 2024 campaign, eyeing a potential Week 10 return against Adelaide. Scheer is out of her moonboot and has added a running program to her rehab.

“Chloe is tracking really well. If she’s cleared by the medical team to play in the coming weeks, then she’ll be selected,” Johnson said.

“Given the work Chloe has put into her rehab this season, if we have the opportunity to play her, we’ll be naming her in our 21.”

Amy McDonald is also edging closer to a return from a hamstring injury that has seen her miss the past three games.
“Amy is progressing well and we will continue to monitor her progress this week,” Johnson said.

“We haven’t yet ruled her out for Sunday’s game against Brisbane, but at this stage it is more likely she will return against West Coast the following weekend.”

Bryde O’Rourke is still at least a couple of weeks away from being available for selection as she continues to recover from a collarbone injury.

I wouldn't be so sure. After all, why change the habits of a lifetime?

#wearegeelong

In that case it wouldn't be a surprise to see us chasing a ruck because it's long been a Geelong habit to have a number of rucks on the list and it's just been poor luck that we've had 3 on our playing list over the past 10 months but didn't get a senior game from any of them

We pick up rucks, alright. We just make a point of never getting quality or durable rucks into our system. And that's how we find ourselves here yet again.

As has been stated we need a ruck, im afraid after this year we might lose some of our gun players cause of it.

Why?

Because of a list situation that was essentially outside of the clubs hands following the trade & draft periods in December last year. If they (club / list management team) knew at that time that neither Fuller or Hoare would be playing come round 1, they sat on their hands to do nothing about it, then I could see some frustration from players with an obvious hole not being address. But that’s not the case

A bigger issue surely would be if we were getting smashed by 50points each week, as then I could more so see some players considering their future - as happened a few years ago when Purcell asked for a trade to Melbourne

Instead, we’ve been competitive in all but one match with the Carlton clash really the only one we never looked to put ourselves winning - but we’ve put ourselves in good positions in every other match, but for inaccuracy in front of goal or defensive lapses, we’ve let ourselves down

How the club addresses the situation regarding obvious holes come seasons end will be telling, but I’m not expecting that players who commited long term less than 12 months ago to suddenly have a change of mind

If we take a step back to look a bit more objectively at the season, we can see there’s been some positive signs and things to move forward with, but with a couple of areas that need tweaking - if the club addresses those needs in the off season, then why wouldn’t players be excited about what we could potentially see next season?

And for those wondering, here’s our current list situation:

Can anyone name the last round we didn't lose a player to injury?

We already knew Kearns was out concussion, but we've also lost Darcy Moloney to injury - wonder if it's linked to the ankle she hurt against Sydney in our previous match:

Geelong have named their initial squad for Sunday's clash against Brisbane at GMHBA Stadium.

Five players have been added to the 24-player squad, including Shelley Scott who is in line to play her 75th AFLW game this weekend.

Chantal Mason, Brooke Plummer, Abbey McDonald and Kate Kenny have all been included on the extended interchange.

The Cats will name their final team at 5.00pm on Friday night, with five players to be named on the interchange and the remaining three to be emergencies.

There are two confirmed changes at this stage, with Darcy Moloney (injured) and Rachel Kearns (concussion) both set to miss this weekend.

Geelong will take on Brisbane at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday afternoon, an exciting rematch of the 2023 AFLW Preliminary Final.
