He's a solid unit, but not sure about blonde Tom Cochrane

Can’t believe he didn’t get picked up in the main draft.
Reckon he’s working on that Bailey look.

Hard at it type.

I remember John "The Future" Butcher had a younger bro, who was described as being as hard as a cat's head 😃

Sadly, was never much more than an SANFL Ressies standard player.

Hope TC has a good career here, and that his younger bro finds his way to us.

However the vibes I get are that Tassie will most probably be allowed to claim him as one of their priority 16yo and 17yo picks which they are likely to be gifted next year.
Stuart is exploring Aboriginal lineage and if so, we may be able to pick up Doug as an NGA.

Presumably there’s a lot more to this pick than just Doug.

To those who watch these kids, is he a better investment for our list than Burgoyne, Montgomery and Francou at this stage?

Burgoyne/Montgomery and Francou are currently nothing footballers.

Francou I suspect Port really like and will earn a spot in the midseason draft if he continues the trajectory he's been on since mid last year.

Tom can play and is going to work his backside off to avoid being Dougies brother.

This call works on Tom now and is a good call by Port to give Tom every opportunity here rather than elsewhere eventually.

There might have to be a " Get Dougie" created thread to separate the two once the season is under way.

No we can't. In SA and WA aborigional kids have to come from country zones of aligned state league clubs, to have draft rights. So as Doug lives in metro Adelaide we have no draft rights if he does get into our NGA.

Thats why we got access to Lachie Jones and Port or the crows had no access to Izak Rankine.

Getting Doug into our NGA is about him spending 2 years doing training with the club via our NGA for elite sanfl juniors 14 to 18 year olds with our 4 aligned clubs - SA, WA, WWT and Norwood, so that when we try and get him in the 2026 draft he never had to leave home so to speak.

So we move him to a country house for a couple nights a week?

This discussion is hilarious, trying to find a way to rort the rort.

Easiest way will be to just groom him nice and early as we did with JHF and get him to request a trade ASAP. Picking his brother is likely part of that strategy, not withstanding that Tom has obviously shown enough in his own right to be worth the punt.

Thats blocked as they look at where you have spent the majority of your years between 10 to 17 like state of origin footy.

If you read the CBA the GM of Football Operations at the AFL does have the power to exempt players from normal draft procedures. I dont think that clause has ever been applied.

I’ve heard WA and SA clubs have been pushing very hard to change that metro rule. It can’t sit well with the current politically correct AFL house that they don’t treat all aboriginal players equally.

Drafts like this one with so little aboriginal representation must help the argument.

Yep, he's a KPP and has potential to be the #1 pick in 2026. Still a lot of time between now and then, though.

I'm still shocked Stuart Cochrane only played 50-odd games for Port over 3 years. My vague memories of that era make it seem like he was here for years longer.

Yeah, wow. That just feels like it's wrong.

Guys like Stuart Cochrane & Tom Logan would be far better than some of the depth players we've had in recent times. Solid.

Played 19/22 H&A games in 2004 but was omitted for the first final. Had played 41/47 games from when he joined the club to the start of the 2004 finals. He wasn't a great player by any means but the coaches did like him at the time so he was stiff to miss out.

Swapped for Michael Stevens, who played only 44 games for N0rf, so we won that trade!

The current rule is about a numbers game.

The pool of aboriginal boys in Victoria divided by 10 is a lot lower than the pool of boys divided by 2 in both WA and SA. So thats why its on only country zones in WA and SA

But 5 Vic clubs have zones and rights in NT - Essendon, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn and Melbourne. Gold Coast get Darwin so I'm not sure how much that distorts the numbers for those 5 club vs the other 5 Vic clubs and the WA and SA clubs.

If enough Aborigional kids and groups jump up and down the AFL might change things.
