Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

no actually he chose to enter a draft and was drafted to a club without having any say in it.

the team he was selected for used him and he used it.

Harry Marsh was drafted to play in a different state, was backup played a prelim, was dropped and was delisted no doubt against his wishes

thanks for coming.

being a professional athlete is brutal and unforgiving. to resent players for trying to maximise their earnings is not my viewpoint

If Warner wants to go meet with West Coast to see what they want to offer, I couldn't care less.

What I do care about is when he goes and meets with their CEO so publicly when he would be perfectly aware that he is going to be recognised and it is going create unwanted attention for the club he currently plays for.

If this speculation with Warner drags on for the year then it has the potential to stuff our entire 2025 season. The last thing we need is Warner adding to it himself.

And when Warner nominated for the draft, he would have known AFL was a team sport.

Parker started looking around because he was playing at Frankston.
Reckon it started well before that, probably at his exit interview 2023, when he may have been told that he would not be guaranteed a senior spot in 2024. Read the writing on the wall for 2025 or contract beyond and started looking around for a longer deal. Chat with Clarkson, possibly others.

If the club was convinced Chad was set on leaving, surely they’d have traded him this year.

He’ll doubtless say he hasn’t made up his mind - but I don’t believe that. I think he at least has a very strong preference one way or the other.

The optimist in me wants to believe he’s keen to stay & is just negotiating the best deal he can.

The pessimist in me thinks he’s set on going home to WA & is now just using the Swans as leverage.

I think he saw the writing on the wall when we picked up Adams.

He will want to win a premiership. versus. Missus wants to return to WA.
Thats it.

We are 'in the window'. In his mind he wants to stay to get the glory. In her mind I want some curtains etc in WA.

He knows he can get the dollars here(Sydney) and there(some WA club not winning a Flag).

Does he want to stay in Sydney with his mates and win a premiership or 3.
or
Earn a couple extra hungees playing for some purple clown outfit that does nuttin. Nuttin. Hmmmmm. I can read his mind.

It is a tough decision.

I have in Sydney
Mates
Flag chances
Guys that make me look good on field
The chemistry is here
I have grown up with these guys

vs

I go to Freo

My girl friend gets curtains on our house which I love because she loves it
Freo is a cool place to live
I like purple

Just curious..are mills, heeney, Grundy , rowbottom Errol , Blakey and co on the same CBA as Chad or is just him that didn’t think coming back early was warranted
To be fair, he's probably on unders at the moment based on when he re-signed (back in 2021 I think?).

In any case, I wouldn't begrudge a player for not returning earlier than expected. I'd be more inclined to celebrate those voluntarily returning earlier.

And I've been pretty critical of Warner this year.

His brother hasn't come back early as well.

I wouldn't judge them for it, and the Chad is known to be a hard trainer.

From all reports the Warner's are a very very close knit bunch, I don't begrudge them for spending extra time with family.

We have him on contract and are very much in our premiership window.

We are more likely to win a flag with Warner than we are with two or three extra first round picks in 2025.

Warner probably doesn't know what his doing yet, and I don't judge him for hearing out those from WCE.

Remember this year Logan was apparently staying at Crown Perth on Fremantle's dime and he signed an extension.

I am looking forward to seeing how Corey comes out of this preseason. If it is like Chad burst out after his preseason. I reckon Chad and Corey are double teaming and motivating each other.

Gunna be great to see the outcomes of their preseason.

I'm looking forward to it.

This x183274872348324 nobody saying he cant go and meet so and so just read the room Chad! :tearsofjoy:

I'd like to keep Warner, but if it requires paying way over then I'm happy for that to be WCE or Freo. No player is bigger than the team, and paying one player a significant portion of your overall salary cap means you need to make cuts elsewhere.

I just want the deal wrapped up sooner rather than later so we can get on with things.

The thing I don’t get, is why would the public pressure work on the club to up its offer?

Surely a professional club would set what value they think is reasonable upfront, and then stick to their limits - regardless of what the public / supporters thought.

If was a list manager, I would not let public displays change the offers I gave players at all - if anything I would be tempted to remove / condition some perks to incentivise the player and his manger to conduct themselves professionally throughout the negotiation.

I reckon the people who should be worried are the large number who make a living out of being sports journalists if all they can do is obsess over a round of golf. Are they going to keep this up for the whole season? Or until he re-signs with Sydney?

Warner will either re-sign with Sydney or he'll move to another club. Whatever happens, the sun will come up the following morning. The world will keep spinning.

Surely, even within the (relatively inconsequential, in the overall scheme of things) realm of sport, there are hundreds of more interesting stories that might be written than stalking Warner and who he talks to, or does not talk to, over the next ten months?

Fans and players who talk about multi premierships are really getting ahead of themselves. A feel of dripping in arrogance. Let's win one before any talk of more. They are bloody hard to win. Talent is only part of the battle.
