Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

I decided to go at what was said about Chad before he was drafted. These were some bits that stood out:

"Warner does not boast the same explosive athleticism as some other midfield prospects" and "He may not have the penetration in his kicking, but Warner has also shown an ability to be effective and damaging with his handball ability"

Chad didn't rate a profile by Cal Twomey, and wasn't rated in the top 50 by Fox Footy.

Our board took him as an inside mid lacking in x-factor, and, to be fair, Chad described himself as "basically just a tough, inside mid, just tackling machine who loves racking up the contested footy".

Partly he was underestimated, partly he has changed [or caesar88 might say been changed (by our nefarious, neanderthal coaches) - sorry, caesar, that's probably harsher than you deserve]

IIRC Chad set about changing himself physically and skills wise when he went home at the end of his first year. Increased his explosiveness exponentially.

No comment Calli!

It’s gonna be a hard ask to re sign Chad .

The lure of home
Mrs wants back there
Ridiculous offers from the wa teams.

Club did the right thing by not bringing anyone in, at least we might have a punchers chance to be in the same ball park for salary
