In theory the new rules would suit someone like Castagna in terms of ball getting as he should have more one on one aerial opportunities. But equally the new rules will likely punish his lack of polish when disposing of the ball. For this reason I think he needs to develop better composure ball in hand or the more deadly types like Butler and Bolton will out compete him. Higgins another who will need to improve his set shots.
Credit to him he was contesting situations time after time just not expected of small forwards , more often than not he’d bring ball to ground which is his job , this will change with sec tall forward

Tell you what, we question (rightly) George's kicking in front of goal, but a bloke who escape's scrutiny on that front is Bachar Houli. He misses his fair share of both on the run and set shots on goal as well. He's 41-51 career. George is 54-44. Houli misses a LOT.

To be fair to Houli most of his shots would be from longer range and on the run, and both of these factors produce a lower expected accuracy percentage on average. This is borne out in the graphics on this site:

In fact Houli's goals to scores ratio is running around 44-45%. I could guess his average score is recorded from 45 metres on a 40 degree angle with a higher general play(as opposed to set shot) ratio than the overall AFL average. The graphics indicate 40% goals to scores ratio might be expected in those conditions.

Castagna running at around 55% goals to scores ratio but you might guess his scores come from closer shots than Houli's on average with a higher ratio of set shots as well. It could even be that Houli's 45% conversion is superior to Castagna's 55% conversion given where the shots are being taken from.

Doesn't seem to be an issue for Jayden Short. He's running at 59%. Another that runs out of the back half with a lower ratio of set shots, Kamdyn McIntosh - he's running at 53%. Ellis struggles at 48% but otherwise, Houli clearly remains a BAD shot on goal regardless of how and in what situations he's taking those shots.

You have put together a fair argument. Short at an exceptional 59% does not mean Houli's 45% is poor, but I think it is right Short is the best comparison with Houli in terms of where the shots are being taken from. Short is possibly the best player in the comp from that 45-55m range on the run though. Ellis also seems a decent comparison but is not far ahead of Houli.

McIntosh is taller and I seem to recall him getting several set shots from slightly closer range after taking marks. My impression is he is a quite reliable set shot. Probably not a fair comparison with Houli.

It is tough to rate them fairly without knowing the full facts about the circumstances from which their shots are taken. The fairest comparisons with Castagna though would be Butler and Rioli who have career records of 48.25 and 51.28 respectively, so he is well behind them, and could use some improvement.

Meanwhile GRigg kicked a massive three goals last season

CASTANGA pressure is great BUT he will continue to cost us games- his decision making is a bigger issue than his kicking !!!!

Are you for real!!!!
We need to find out if Bolton

watch the replay, most of our goals had george pressuring someone or forcing a turnover or creating something out of nothing. did way more towards goals than 90% of the other spuds out there for us tonight!

bolton in for weller or butler if anyone

I agree that Castanga applies great pressure and BUT THATS NOT ENOUGH- his kicking and decison making are not up to it and will continue to hold the team back!!!!
