Player Watch #11: Jason Castagna - signed to 2023

Players like Baker Aarts Bolton have done plenty in the off season and practise games yet Castagna was rushed in in front of them.
If we keep ignoring our kids they will want out at some stage.

The second team has been damn good for two seasons now we should be forcing the issue when the senors stink it up by dropping them and playing performing younger blokes.

tbf the first team won the premiership and minor premiership in that same period

the reserves were pretty disappointing in last years finals too

Its time that players like Castagna , Butler , Ellis , Short are held accountable for their bad games and cant expect to stay in the team based on 2017.

Its time to play the kids when they are performing and drop the seniors when they are not and if it ruffles their feathers then so be it.

As much as he frustrates me, I like Castagna's chaos. He is capable of the extraordinary and the very ordinary in the same chain. He plays in my team because it's hard to find that in in some teams.

you miss the point Castagna was rushed in at the expense of players who actually did enough in the twos.

On that list only Markov, Butler, Castagna, Menadue, Rioli, Graham and Higgins have played more than 10 games across how many seasons.Under Hardwick over the last 5 or so seasons we have a lousy record of getting decent number of games into young players thats just 7 kids over what a 5 yr period
Hardwick has always played the older retreads over youth.There is no excuse today to not give some of the younger blokes a go rather than rehashing blokes who have had opportunity and just muck up.
There is no reason older blokes who perform horribly should not be dropped.

Pretty sure he kicked 0.6 against GWS last season and big reason why we lost that game.

He's technically awful by foot and can't handball on his left side either, I curse every time the ball is passed to him.

I don't subscribe to the theory that he's best 22 because he can chase.

0.5 against GWS last season - season overall 26.24. Season 2017 26.20 overall. The one damning non-fact is how many kicks went out of bounds on the full? I don't know. There were a few though. I share your pain - sometimes! He has that intangible quality of unpredictability. He's nothing elite other than that, though he is pretty quick, and sharp. As you say he tackles well becuase of that. He makes things happen though, some bad, more good than not. Drop Butler long before him.

Oh I think we have a pretty fair idea what happens when he's 30 meters out dead in front. It's actually the only part of his game that isn't 'chaotic'

George brings defensive pressure and elite speed but can’t kick for shit and only plays forward

Bolton brings speed , reasonable foot skills, can play mid/forward but lacks defensive pressure

Surely it’s easier to install defensive pressure into Bolton’s game than it is to turn around George’s kicking

And yet he still manages to kick more goals than points. From 30m out he's no Robinson Crusoe. He's in pretty good company for shocking misses. I'd still rather him than Butler, and while I'd love to see Bolton get a bank of games so get an idea of what we have got before WA comes-a-calling, it ought to at the expense of some others, for this week at least.

I read this as, the last 2 seasons he has had 50 shots on goals. That is pretty incredible. And only need to tighten up the accuracy 20% and it makes a huge difference to our game.

It can happen, Higgins is proof, shite kick for goal on set shots last year and so far has started well.

He is 22. Should be in the team, has runs on the board.

My point on Weller was not that he should or shouldnt be playing, it was that he isnt our biggest issue right now.

I dont have an issue with role players but you dont rush role players back in to a side, that luxury is reserved for stars
