Our best small on the list at the moment, will play all year

It's a very very sobering thought when you're 'best small' has such putrid skills and decision making and his only weapon is 'chaos'. It would be interesting if Castagna were put on the open market what kind of interest would he get and what kind of draft pick would he'd net us? Rioli and Higgins (both small forwards) would easily get us top ten picks. Castagna on the other had would at very best get something in the 50s or perhaps an exchange of third rounders like we got for Miles and Ellis. And before you say 'ahh but he is premiership player' so was Townsend and we saw how much interest he got last year. Not only is Castagna not our best small but there is no guarantee he'd even be on a AFL list if he no longer played for Richmond.

jiggins will barely play forward in his career and rioli has done nothing since he broke his leg in the gf

Higgins has scored a total of 5 goals in two outings this year as a small forward. He unlike Castagna who is either unwilling or totally incapable of fixing his crap kicking (and this despite having been on the list three years longer) has improved his set shots out of sight. He is undeniably our best small forward at the moment. And Castagna over Rioli (even one on reduced output), that's just really funny.

It’s already been well documented that these role player smalls need to be tackling machines to hold their spots or be playing like De Goey . They ain’t tackling machines and they sure as heck aren’t goal kicking machines either. My fear is that dimma will resist dropping these guys coz we will be without the forward line General in jack . Balmey needs to pull rank and declare idgaf they couldn’t get a kick in a stampede and won’t be playing next week

A team carrying seven potential small forwards will not be going places.
We needed to keep Sam Lloyd as he would have been better than most options we have available in the twos.
Our young lads will need to mature and develop quickly bc the first two games our lack of midfield depth has been obvious. Actually so obvious that it’s been painful and unbearable to watch.
Dylan Shiel is a waste at Essendon and Lynch is a waste at Richmond as we have a limp midfield. Only benefit is we signed him up for seven years which gives us time to build a midfield. Please no more arse high to grasshopper players and weedy HBF.

We’d be in a pretty tight spot without Lunch at the minute, bit I think your probably right TI.
The days of the Back Pocket playing forward might be over.

playing snake on that thing in the work toilets until your legs go numb
True...stand up quickly and you haveno feeling in your legs and go head first into the back of the toilet door...very embarrassing with pants near your ankles...

Agree but i dont believe its a hard fix tbh

Cotchin , Martin, Prestia,Edwards - all there for the next 3+ years
RCD , Graham , Ross , Naish ,Turner (i rate this kid)

If the rumours of Hopper are real plus 1 more then all of a sudden things look very different

The team will require a rejuvenation at seasons end and father time is coming for the likes of Grigg/Houli as well as Delistments for Markov/Menadue and perhaps the Free agency for the likes of Astbury / Ellis

We could easily lose 6 premiership players for 2020 and you know that would not be such a bad thing

Yes I believe we’re going to have to be patient for about a year to allow for some of those young lads to develop.
I’m still in a state of hope that at least a Ross or RCD can do a Graham.
It’s still a concern that some of our senior players are not looking 100% switched on and we have two guns missing. It’s all unraveling in front of my eyes like my fishing reel and looking like hard work to pull back in.
Amazingly this time last year our depth looked awesome and yet by the end of the year we could see there was a big bodied genuine midfielder crisis.
The next few weeks will be telling, not so much in wins , but more on what KDH and the match committee decide on which path to take. Will it be the 2016 one of playing rejects or investing in untried kids????

To be perfectly honest i could see this happening 2 years ago prior to winning the flag and we were 1 big bodied inside mid short on our list, I was 'Screaming' for our club to trade for Jack Steele when he was basically given away to St Kilda even after we had rated him so highly in his draft year
Setterfield is another player that will become a good get for Carlton.

Hopper , Bonar , Taylor are the players we should be really having a go at and go hard, Brodie from Gold Coast is another that fills a need

Ye we often discussed this and I used the task force needed to implement ‘Operation Midfield ‘, but I went quiet on it bc we won the flag and it appeared footy was going another direction with small player defensive pressure and speed. However after watching the last six weeks of 2018 you could see we had been found out and I was at it again with many others that we were in need of some big boys.
I would have moved heaven and Earth to get Shiel over instead of the luxury we didn’t need, but that’s just me.

I get what you are saying about shiel, but if we didnt get lynch we would be stuffed with jack now out.

george went for a run around europe with lambert

If he doesn't fix his kicking and his decision making he'll have a lot more time in the future to tramp through Europe. Might have been a good idea to stay home and hire a specialist kicking coach out of his own pocket. Unless of course he has already desperately tried to fix the problem and has concluded that it's hopeless. Or worse still the coaches aren't in his ear telling him that this is potentially career threatening. Either way I can't say I find any of this particularly reassuring .

Possibly , but we have the more mobile Moore , Balta and Miller . They’re not Lynch , but they’re actually more productive as chf / ruck fill ins.
After the first two rounds I can’t see how Lynch is going to help us if we have a limp midfield and Jack was forced to ruck. Lynch is currently under done and is playing way too deep to be dangerous. ATM he looks like he’s still playing for the Suns. He could bag a 100 goals and we would still resemble StKilda with Lockett. We needed to get our midfield sorted out with one extra big gun in there. I see Lynch as a waste atm and the Lynch : Jack show looked like a joke after a small sample of two games.
