AFL Player #13: Nik Cox - Subbed out vs GCS

What? We drafted two tall kids who take longer to develop and both of whom have been injured. Perkins has shown plenty as well. Even players like JUH, Campbell, Thilthorpe, Henry and O'Driscoll have been good. Considering their lack of junior years, the 2020 draft is tracking fine.
Agree with this. Give Cox and Reid a bit of time. Took Joe a while to do anything much. And these guys had very interrupted final year of U18s footy too. Main challenge seems to be to work out where to play the kid.

Lock him in at CHF and keep him there. No need to do the Essendon thing and throw him around so he's never settled as a player and loses confidence. Needs his moxy back

We have that area covered already, we just drafted a couple of CHFs.

Watching those highlights all the best stuff is around half forward drifting in. High half forward flank would suit.

i like the idea of him forward. get him confident in kicking off both feet again and i reckon he'd be a handful up there
Would have to make sure his pressure is at optimal level but he would be a seriously hard match up as a half forward. For me is is simply a back or a forward and early on it does not have to be KP. He has the skill set to play intercept and defend at half back and also has the running power and marking power to play high half forward.

A hard running half forward that runs their opponent in to the ground like Nick Reiwoldt wouldn’t be a bad outcome.

In my dream world, Cox is CHB with Reid FB. I could see Cox intercepting around the opposition 50 and then taking off on a run forward. Similar to what Fletch used to like to do , but Cox wouldn't be as deep as Fletch.

Naughton may be someone to model off too (pun half intended).
Wright, Cox & Jones gives you a bit of flexibility. Jones has a great tank and Cox's isn't too shabby either. Wright works hard up the ground too. You could feasibly 2nd ruck any one of them too.

Resting mid - Cox/Jones - Alwyn
Small fwd - Wright - Jones/Cox

work towards that for 2024. And for god's sake recruit a pure KPF (Archer Reid) so he's ready when Wright is ready to wind down.

If Hayes is as good as he's rated, I'm going with Cox as a fwd and invest into the Reid, Ridley, Hayes backline. Add Redman, McGrath, D'Ambrosio & if Montgomerie turns out a solid intercept medium prospect...build that.

Think Cox, Reid, Hayes and Ridley ends up being a little too tall for the current game.

Depends whether guys like Ridley and Cox can play small effectively, I believe ant has spoken about Cox playing very well on different sized opponents down back as a junior.

small sample size to go off, but he seems alright on opponents of most sizes.
Ridley I think goes ok without being a gun on the smalls (a la Redman)

My backline focus now would be;
Ridley - Reid - Redman
McGrath - Hayes - D'Ambrosio
Short term - Kelly & Laverde

Short term - Kelly & Laverde are that last spot & 7th defender.

Poor Redman omitted?

Sounds like a bit of sanity has prevailed and he’s playing half back in the match sim

Does it sound more half back the one of the 3 tall positions?

I like that for this year. Think he can play a similar role to Lukoscius did when he was playing half back in his 3rd

From what I read he was playing a high defensive position so sounds like half back and pushing up and back.
