May get permabanned for saying this but didn’t mind that little anecdote from Haydos and JL.

Apparently whenever they used to play Pakistan, before Australia started their innings Haydos would walk straight up to Shoaib Akhtar, call him a B-Grade actor and tell him he’s playing with the big boys now. Only for JL to have to face up to a pissed off Shoiab for the first ball

I know we've heaped a lot of shit on him through the years, but you have to commend Mitch Marsh for coming in and taking his opportunity with both hands.

Making it look very easy, albeit against some uninspired bowling.

FWIW, the last test at the WACA had a touch over 22,000 there on day 1. That was an Ashes test, and there were many - including me - who made sure they went to say farewell to the old dump. Throw in heaps of English tourists, too.

To get 16,000 to say 1 vs Pakistan is actually pretty good. It's comfortably the highest day's attendance vs Pakistan in Perth.

I looked at this last year, I think, but generally speaking, Optus crowds have been higher than comparable WACA crowds ( ie highest attendance vs India and NZ in Perth have both been at Optus).

Correct. If the old WACA was still available there wouldn't have been 16k attending yesterday. There will be good crowds if there's an Indian test in Perth next season and the Ashes will bring easily the biggest test crowds ever in Perth. Then we'll go back to 10-20k again after that for NZ, SAf, whoever else.

No real danger of losing a test to Hobart or Canberra for their 5-8k max. Plus Christina Matthews made some very smart deals with Cricket Australia when Perth missed out for a couple of years so it's locked in for a while to come
