Welcome to Nick Larkey

Selection No.73 – Nick Larkey
Bryce Lewis says: "Nick has been a bit of a swingman. He played back for Oakleigh Chargers and in the National Championships. But he's kicked multiple goals when forward for Oakleigh and has pinch-hit in the ruck, so he's a bit of a troubleshooter. He still has a lot of filling out to do at 198cm, but we think he offers us some versatility as a tall."

Nick Larkey- Pick 73

Bryce Lewis says:

“Nick's been a bit of a swingman. He played as a defender for Vic Metro in the National Championships, but he’s equally capable up forward.

“He’s kicked some bags of goals, and he can also pinch-hit in the ruck.

“He’s 198 centimetres and needs to fill out a fair bit; we’re confident he’ll do that.

“Nick’s a guy who has shown an ability to impact games for Oakleigh, including finals during the course of this season.”

Defender

Well there’s a thought

All that having been said his hair always looks in place.
lol yeah its bugged me for ages always patting his hair down at the front. If i had to guess id say receding hairline covered by huge fringe.

But more importantly his attributes, well he usually has a high work rate and played like a guy who didn't want another knock. Obviously still tender. He's not particularly strong over head for a key forward, not a long kick and not overly quick. His accuracy and work rate are usually first class. He dropped a mark he should've taken, so could've easily ended up with two that would've mask his poor game a bit.
Chom didnt make the most of his chances either, shouldve had 4 today, but will take pretty of positives out of today which will flow on to goal kicking im sure.

He did while fixing his hair a number of times.

Flashbacks to the Bont tucking his hair behind his ears at every contest and then chopping us up like liver

Very good player but hard to be too supportive of a game like this. If too sore to play - put your hand up and say so, otherwise you can't spend a whole game cheaping out and waiting for freebies. Larkey is never particularly inclined to congested marking for more than a 1v1 so if contact is an issue due to fitness I would have preferred he was put into a more mobile role personally. End of the day though we want them playing as we see them in 2-3 years, not necessarily about today. So if this is the structure to build Comben so be it. Will be interesting to see what happens next week.

Really disappointing game from a senior player who is capable of more.

Seems like when it's a struggle he tries to get cheapies out the back or frees, whereas when we're actually on he competes properly.

IDK, I'm not really that concerned. He has good capabilities and as he gets more experience working in tandem with chom, and as chom improves, Nick should look better too.

Which of the other forwards would you leave out?
CZ to full time mid pushing forward 2024.

We are in a surprisingly freeing situation where none of our forwards are certainties to make it to the ultimate glory.

The pessimist is thinking back to Bastinac, Black and Atley looking like rolled-out gold bullion before all flair was dashed in their 3rd and 4th years.

We have a few in the forward line who could realistically go either way: PC (likely to make it), Larkey (likely) CT (unlikely), CZ (very likely but still has consistency issues), Chom (likely - fitness pending), Stephenson (could go either way).

In 2024 and beyond, I wouldn’t mind seeing something like:

R:Zurhaar
HF:Sheezel Chom Stephenson
F:Curtis Larkey 2023 Small/KPF

Plus: have another KPF developing in the VFL.

Triple towers so opposition can waltz it out of our forward 50? No thanks. We've suffered enough from Sack Scotts.

Just get competent small forwards when it goes out the back or drops in front of it. We're so vanilla up forward and can't rely on our mids.

We need a Luke Breust.

Souvas biggest problem by far is his refusal to lead at the ball carrier. He is hell bent on leading toward goal expecting an 80m kick over the back. He’s been doing it for some time. Needs to stamp it out of his game ASAP.

His 2nd biggest issue is his inability to read hurried kicks into our forward line from his teammates. His opponents react so much quicker. Not sure that’s fixable though.

You see games like that and you wonder how the * he gets his goals lol
He was so lazy. Wants to get the easy goal out the back and not push up and present.

It’s weak selfish shit like that you usually see in local footballers.

Larkey and Zurhaar have both already made it. In their seventh year on the list, played over 75 games (after years in the VFL under Brad,) and kicked over 120 goals each.

The only thing that'll stop them playing another 150 games is injury imo.
