Just posted this on the Port board and though you lot might be interested as well. If it's old news on this board then ..... ah well. :)

The local paper reported today that the Bulldogs will play Carlton in Darwin mid June next year. Left the paper at work, but it will be around the midseason break by the sounds of it. Wrt news of this nature, the local paper is usually quite accurate.
That must mean that there is no Cricket up here next year due to the English tour.

That is about all it said, so what we don't know is if the Bulldogs are playing one or two games up here. There was talk about a possible second game due to the success that the first one was.
If two, chances are the second one will be around round 20 again, and if so who against?

Why on earth would we play a Victorian side in Darwin? We can actually make money out of playing Carlton at Telstra.

We should play Freo or Port in Darwin.
Like I said, that's all the paper said.
If it wasn't for the fact that they are usually reasonably accurate with news of this nature, one would dismiss it outright. Mostly for the reasons you said, and that both Port and Freo were quite keen to play up here when the idea was first suggested.
Also, I thought there was an agreement to play Cricket up here mid June. If not Australia, then Australia A or something similar. Obviously not.

Good point. A game against Freo makes the most sense.

Absolutely.

We have played two melb sides in their interstate 'home' games in the last two seasons, so it doesn't shock me, stupid as it may be.

To confirm that PAfolwr wasn't seeing things :):

Agree that there's absolutely no (reasonable) logic behind it.

The Darwin game will bring the same financial return irrespective of whether we play Carlton, Freo, Port or Essendon.

But the difference between a home game against Port (17,000) or a home game against Carlton (35,000) at Telstra Dome will be around $200,000.

So if it's accurate, and we do indeed cop a Telstra Dome home game against, say, Port, most of the financial benefit derived from transferring a home game to Darwin is eroded before the season even starts.

Should have included a preferred opponent for the match in our official requests for next season's fixture ( ... instead of requesting to play Geelong twice ).

And for what it's worth, here's how our draw's shaping up (according to a few media/website leaks):

R1 COLLINGWOOD MONDAY 28 MARCH MCG AWAY (could be Sunday)
R2 MELBOURNE TELSTRA DOME HOME
R3 RICHMOND TELSTRA DOME HOME
R4 WEST COAST SUBIACO AWAY
R5
R6
R7
R8
R9 SYDNEY SCG HOME
R10
R11
R12
R13 CARLTON SAT 18 JUNE MARARRA HOME
R14
R15 FREMANTLE SAT 9 JULY SUBIACO OVAL AWAY
R16 ADELAIDE SUN 17 JULY AAMI STADIUM AWAY
R17
R18
R19
R20
R21
R22 COLLINGWOOD FRIDAY 26 AUGUST (N) TELSTRA DOME HOME (Herald Sun had it set for Round 21)

Sunday games cost more to put on then Saturday games.
The big clubs generally get saturday games.
We are getting more and more Sunday games, costing us more money.
Suddenly we lose a 'profitable' game while retaining the loss-making ones.

Too consistent to be a case of misallocation, either someone making the draw doesn't like us and gives us the harder task (as per usual) OR we have been requesting the wrong things from the get-go, so we get what we want because noone else particularly wants it.

Bad choice of game. Especially with Carlton being a new 'semi-tenant' of both MCG and Telstra.

At least one in Darwin is better then 2 in Darwin, and a another reduction in homegames.
Rose has stopped the liquidation. Maybe in time we could get those game back.

Rose stated that if we were to play 2 in Darwin, we'd drop the Sydney game, thus meaning losing no more home games.

As for playing Carlton in Darwin... The AFL can go ******** themselves in every orifice that they can think of, and then they can do it again.

It's crazy from our point of view for all the reasons stated.

But it's also go to have Carlton mad as well.

Their fans lose a game in Melbourne.

It's a significant travel load.

And we get the benefit not them.

Forcing Melbourne clubs to play other Melbourne clubs outside of Melbourne is something that should be minimised. It just doesn't make sense from any perspective.

If you play Carlton at either Telstra Dome or the MCG, you would pull probably 32,000+.
If you play lets say, Freo or WCE or Port, if would be under 19,000.
You really should play a Interstate team there.

North Played Footscray at Canberra last year, and drew a pitiful 7000!
There is no real interest in Vic Clubs there apart from North and Coll/wood.

So in future i only hope North play WCE and FREO at Manuka. As if we play Sydney in Melbourne, we could possibly draw 40,000 like we have in the past.

Thanks Westy.Been putting it together slowly myself but hadn't picked up on some of those.First three games are good for us to have early as they are in Melbourne and will help us with membership.5 interstate games down already is a little concerning. We seem to play every team interstate every season.

Now the draw is out the Carlton game at Marra looks totally out of place when we play West Coast at the MCG.

As a famous dumb red head once said "Please Explain"

Although it's a different case, the Kangaroos played Collingwood at Manuka back in 2001. Normally when they play there i would say they would make a small profit. This game due to one off sponsorships they made $500,000(figure was reported in herald sun). This may be why they're playing Carlton.

This month (or is it 5 weeks due to split-round) is an absolute disaster,
and most likely what will kill our season.
Too much travel, back-to-back road trips are achievable in NBL, NBA and a few other sports.
AFL is clearly not one of them, as history has shown time and again.

IT IS JUST SO VERY VERY WRONG!
