My Target List

* Luke McPharlin - Can play key back and key forward. Gives us the option of moving Waite to CHF and also provides back-up should Jamo go down with injury again. Could also go to CHF himself and as an older player in a rebuilding Freo side we may be able to get him for atleast a fair price.

* Quentin Lynch - Monster of a man with a big engine. Would be a good physical presence as a back-up ruckman or third-tall forward and allow Hampson, Warnock and Kreuzer the time the need to put on the size that won't allow them to be bullied in the ruck. 2nd round pick will probably do the job.

* Nathan Jones - Big bodied midfielder. We've seen how useful one of these players are before Hadley went down. Melbourne will probably want too much but he is the sort of player we need.

* Nathan Djerrkura - WHO?!? Nathan Djerrkura is in a similar mode to Jones, but a more versatile player, he has struggled for oppertunity at the Cats and we may be able to get him at a fair price.

We do not need Robbo. We had 11 different goal scorers last night and a machine called Fevola to take care of the goals. Kicking goals isn't our problem, not having a back line and conceding multiple goals might just have something to do with it. We need a big man down back more than anything and taz might just be the man. (i'd still be happy with goose)
Yeah i'm with you blueblood25 we need a gorilla down back, love Jamo,TBird and Bower's efforts when they're fit and playing but they just dont have the big bodies and never will have to take on the big forwards.

Was injured for most of the season. Has confidence about him but might need a change of venue... bit hard for him being behind rough/franko.

Just interested, what would carlton be willing to trade for one of Dowler or Thorp?

Could be difficult because we picked them up at 6 and the club seems to rate them...

Thorp, although taken early in the draft, has not been able to get a regular gig with the Hawks, because of injury, but also because his VFL performances obviously haven't warranted it. His current value would be no more than a second round draft pick, but I doubt we would offer that for him.

Dowler showed a bit this season, but has yet to live up to his high ranking. Hawthorn would want a first round draft pick for him, however I don't think our club would be prepared to pay that price for him, if they were interested in him.

When we get the injured KEY players back we will be better. Backline depth should be our focus over summer, and additional avenues to goal. Kreuzer playing forward when Warnock returns will aid this. Yarran and Garlett will only improve. Bot maybe a Robbo would be worth a punt on a year to year deal? Would warrant a good defender and spread our forward line. Fev,Kreuzer,Robbo,Betts etc would be potent. His a better kick then Fisher and more consistant.

MY WISH LIST>

New backline coach- SOS we need him.
New assistant coach- someone who can add something fresh to the box...match day. We seem clueless quite often. Dean laidley in some role? I think Voss has benefited by having Brittan's Tactics, experience and ideas.
Geez it shits me seeing Sos and another great Carlton defender in Peter Dean in roles at other clubs who are both top 4 sides.

Another area of concern is our ruck, seem to lack physicality in there and that may change when Kreuzer, Hampson and Warnock put on some more muscle and get a few years under their belt but Capuano i am lead to believe is our ruck coach:eek:, that is a real concern.

Also agree we need Laidley, didn't see to many proactive moves last night although it is hard to tell from the tv.

Stay tuned for DJ wdgann playing hits of the 70's, 80's and 90's...that's right, nothing new, nothing fresh, just the same boring shit you were sick of years ago....wash it all down with an icy cold can of coke...

Kramer - point is that everyone agrees Thornton's not capable of playing 1-on-1 vs bigger forwards - yet this is a task expected of bigger defenders. He's played some good footy in recent weeks, yet time and again gets found out (Jamar - WTF??). I know Carlton fans can't stand Nick Maxwell but truth is he's just about the prototype cut off player. Carlton is screaming out for a player of this quality - fearless, some shit in him and QUICKLY breaks the line with run and accurate disposal. Sooner we're able to put genuine stoppers on quality power forwards and replace Thornton with a better option, the deeper we'll go into September.

We also must address some ridiculous game-plans such as conceding time and space to the opposition bringing the ball out of their defence. Why do we talk about F50 pressure then concede 1/2 the ground??

We need to improve our skills - footy is about possession and we've got some of the worst deliverers in the game. Quality disposal and game-breaking runs from Mcleod and Goodwin, Gilbee, Fisher, Gilbert sets up goals and creates more F50 preswsure than anything else.

I posted recently about the success of Carlton's forwards playing alongside Fev - he WAS selfless last night but in order to create a successful forward structure, the dynamics of the F50 will need to change somewhat.

Just a few observations....

Let's not over-react to what was a very close loss in unfriendly territory up at the "Gabbatoir". Our back-line has great upside with Jamison, Austin and Waite to come back next year; I expect Austin to have a real break-out year next year and hold his position in the back-line. We need to focus on maintaining a settled line-up next year so that we can make a strong run for the top four.

From next year onwards I can't see a regular position (barring a lot of injuries) in the side for Wiggins or Cloke - just lacking in talent. We need to focus on getting Hadley back as our "bullock" in the middle and Warnock in to the ruck to free-up Hampson and/or Kreuzer to spend large parts of the game up forward; who knows, maybe even Jacobs is worth trying up forward. Fevola and one or two agile big bodies would surely provide opportunities for live-wire crumbing forwards.

Let's develop what we've got over Summer - some of our boys need more strength and endurance and the ability to make tackles stick: Garlett could surely improve with an extra 5kgs on his frame! The only two prospects I'd entertain from other clubs would be Thorp and/or Dowler, I suspect however that Hawthorn would want too much for them.

Stay the course!

If Barry Hall was playing for the Blues last night we would have won. Brisbane wouldn't have been able to contain him and Fev. For christs sake he is only a year older than Bradshaw and he goes alright. Carlton should seriously consider trading for him...averaged 3 goals a game this year.

First round pick goes to Griffiths.

2nd round and Jacobs goes to Port for Ebert and Salopek.

Problems solved.

** I know we probably won't get Ebert and Salopek for a 2nd rounder and Jacobs. And I love Jacobs. But it works, damnit!

Brown and Bradshaw last night would have been difficult to stop whoever ws on them. The majority of their goals came from sharp leads and brilliant passing. Not like they were monstering our guys to take contested pack marks for the majority of their goals. I'll say again what I said last night....any defense will struggle when an oppositions midfield is given time and space to spot up players in the forward 50, and we gave Brisbane plenty of both last night.

In terms of the bigger picture it's no coincidence that Thornton's best football has come about when he hasn't had to be the keystone in the defensive structure. With our best team on the ground Bret Thornton doesn't line up at FB or at CHB...he is expected to play on the bigger forrwards at present through necessity, but allowed to play his role as a third tall he is just about the best at what he does.

Maxwell has been entirely unaccountable this year in a defensive structure that allows it. Brave? Sure he goes when its his turn to go, but he has had the luxury of a very solid lock down FB, and a number of tall mobile defenders to work in with. At their respective bests I would take Thornton every single day of the week.

I like Austin - has real potential as a key defender. Just saw him doing handball on Sunday Footy show and by Christ he's got some strength and muscle to add!!!

Hudgton might be someone you guys look at. Old guy but there is still a bit of tread on the tyres. Would fit in pretty well with your needs at the back.
No thanks.

Jamison will be back next year.

Jamo was the perfect match up for Bradshaw who starred last night.

Waite would have made a lot of difference playing as a sweeper across half back or forward.

We do need a big body down back, but our backline has done well up until the last two weeks to hold.

Austin looks like he'll become a big CHB in time.

Is a lot bigger than Bower at the same age and a better kick.

Austin is a better footballer than Dawson.

Dawson is still a hack flattered by St Kilda's zone and mids who push back to help.

I've seen Austin play forward in a VFL game to take some ridiculously brave marks and kick straight in torrential rain.

Apart from the absent Jamison, Waite and Austin, Carlton's problem was we didn't block up space and gave the Lions twin towers a huge paddock to lead into. Carlton were five goals in the 3rd term because there was a wall of Navy Blue in front of Brown and Bradshaw.

Yet that vanished in the last quarter.

Our first rnd pick should be put on the table if there is a quality KPP available for sale from another club under 25 years of age ...

I am open minded to trying to get a decent player from another club, even if it costs us our first rnd pick.

Try this on for size from someone that knows. Want to win a flag in the next two years well here is how to go about it and lets get fairdinkum. Robbie taps to Murph, murph to gibbs, MATT THOMAS sensational block, Gibbs free delivers to DOWLER, goal to the blues. Add Tarrant down back and there you go. Carlton should have had beau and Matt in the draft but on advice from your number one recruiter who put the tag on Beau as being (soft) and not rating Matt Thomas, they both ended up at other clubs. These kids all played TAC together and know each others game very well. Spend the money, find a decent recruiting officer and win a flag. All the above mentioned have each others phone numbers in their phones, and ready to make it happen. Here endeth the lesson.

Tarrant makes a lot of sense. Has experience, can free up Waite for CHF..makes Waite and Tarrant versitile, we can swap them at both ends if need be.
