Agreed. Bulldogs have an incredibly strong midfield and its ******ed that so many underrate them.

Agree.

If we get a little bit of improvement out of Ward, Higgins, Griffen & Cooney (which is certainly achievable) I think we will push Geelong & St.Kilda for the title of the comp's best midfield group.

I know no one is going to be happy with this but:

(1) Geelong - Ablett, Selwood, Bartel, Corey, Ling: enough said
(2) Western Bulldogs - Some top shelf players and the best depth
(3) Hawthorn - Burgoyne and Mitchell are guns and there is a good level of quality across the rest of them.
(4) Collingwood - its close between (3) and (4) - see comment below
(5) St Kilda - this is assuming Luke Ball is gone; if he is there then swap with Collingwood.
(6) Carlton - Lots of cream at the top but not much after that
(7) Brisbane - See Carlton; almost interchangeable with them too.
(8) Adelaide - pretty consistent across the line, but no one really jumps of the page as an absolute star yet.
(9) Sydney - honest hard working midfield
(10) Port Adelaide - Some talent coming through and also a hard working team
(11) West Coast - Best Ruckman and a very good rover but the rest lacks experience
(12) Richmond - despite some issues above the shoulders, some star potential
(13) North - Some grunt power that will be better in years to come
(14) Essendon - key mids are slow workers, very average across the board but with some up and coming potential
(15) Fremantle - see above
(16) Melbourne - see above.
Collingwood in front of St Kilda that's rubbish

Don't get ahead of yourself sonny. Geelong would have one of the better midfileds of all time, and they are still only young.

I could see you being better than St.Kilda's, although if Lovett steps up and Ball stays it won't happen.

But Luke Ball isn't even good enough to get a game in the St Kilda midfield.

3. McLean was never a gun. Not in 2006, not now, never.

Maybe not...but removing the Carlton factor (which reduces his value by about 50% on Big Footy) he has shown himself to be a very competent midfielder, and adds depth to our midfield rotation.

You say see how he performs in a good midfield with genuine competition, I say let's see how he goes with next to no attention from the opposition.

Don't kid yourself.
He would, and most people can acknowledge that.

He is one dimensional and so only can play midfield. He would not replace Watson, Winderlich, Stanton, Prismall, McVeigh or Welsh (tagger). I'd prefer the speed of Zaharakis and the skill by foot of Houli (name a 20 year old to pick up 30 touches against Geelong over the last 3 years) before McLean as well.

Most people are thinking about McLean from 2006 not 2009 (or 2010 as it will be).

Carlton factor is nothing to do with it. I have always maintained that he is a very over rated footballer. He had one good season and has been a bit of a plodder in all the rest. I can't see him ever being anything more than a handy footballer. But yes he should compliment your midfield. He might be handy for you.

Luke Ball isn't a huge loss, while I hope we keep him, it isn't like our midfield falls off dramtically without him. Armitage is the perfect replacement for him and he has shown what he is capable of (see Hawks game 2009). In the past we've relied to much on Ball's getting the contested footy, but this year players like Montagna, Dal Santo and Goddard have really stepped up in that area and got their own ball. And remember, me didn't have Ball for a few games this year and we did fine without him.
The one thing missing from our midfield this year was geniune leg speed, but now that Lovett is a Saint that problem is basically fixed. While I don't see huge improvement left in out midfield I think we can at least maintain 2009 standards - possibly improve slighty, which is good for a top 3 midfield spot in rankings.

1. West Coast
2. Adelaide
3. Geelong
4. Sydney
5. Port
6. Brisbane
7. St Kilda
8. Richmond
9. Western Bulldogs
10. Melbourne
11. Fremantle
12. Carlton
13. Hawthorn
14. Collingwood
15. North Melbourne
16. Essendon

That was a dead on list for 2005.
