What most people know:

Both teams have good fwd lines. Supply will be the issue. Rotating through our midfield will be Renouf/Hale, Burgoyne, Rioli, Sewell, Mitchell, Lewis, Bruce, Bateman, Shiels, Young and Savage. This is where it will be won.

These guys are very capable and if they play like they can, our potent fwd line is able to do the job. Let's hope they are really fired up.

if there not fired up for round 1 were in big big trouble, but clarko would be in more id say.

Almost certainly the best 22 from the available players.

Am not surprised with Suckling,in fact I expected it. I am of the opinion that Suckling will figure strongly in Clarkson's game plan.

This game will not necessarily be a walk over.

Our short back line is going to be tested.

Taylor Walker 194
Shaun McKernan 198
Andy Otten 194

and down back

Scott Stevens 195
Phil Davis 197

We can get home on the back of what should be a very dominant mid field and more experience all over the ground.

A very interesting game.

It might just be a 10 goal hiding!

I am praying that Clarko has sorted out some sort of offensive game plan and the runners that have been bought in have the green light to actually play. Otherwise we are screwed!

Very tough gig first up and would be a whole lot easier if Hodge was fit and firing.

Agree with others, Laddo, Osbourne and Bateman need to show something early in the season - hopefully they do Saturday night.

I'm really excited that Savage and Shiels are getting a game. We are really in need of some fresh legs in the midfield and think for us to improve these two need to play the majority of the season. Their great preseason form has been rewarded. Shiels especially - fantastic preseason.

Looking forward to see how Suckling has progressed. He got early games last year before getting injured but seemed a long way off it when he was playing

Interested at the inclusion of Ladson but I'm assuming he'll be sticking close to the smaller faster forwards or rotating through the middle.
Really hoping Suckling take the next step. Happy we've chosen a younger faster team.

Savage and Shiels getting a go which is exciting. Especially Shiels. We've all wanted to see him in the seniors more and his pre-season form has been rewarded.

Plenty of competition for spots now that Ladson, Suckling, Shiels and Savage have put their hands up for selection.

It also puts the boot into all of our expectations in the best 22 for round 1 thread.

I'm happy with this team. Plenty of experience and quick young talent in the side. I don't understand the negative response by some posters about the selections. Give these guys a chance, they know if they don't perform we have young hungrier guys ready to take there spot. Good move by the coaching panel, guys like Suckling, Ladson, Osbourne, Bateman have a point to prove and i hope for themselves and the clubs sake they do it Saturday night.

surely if bailey not playing round 1 after a good preseason we're not gonna see much of him :(

I have a theory that they might not take Bailey interstate.

Keep him for Melbourne games.

Might be better for management of his knee after games.

Laddo is in the team so he can pass it to Buddy and win us the match, like in 07.

I was one calling for the new guys to be blooded, however, I can see the reasoning giving some of the more experience players first crack, especially over at AAMI.

Laddo, ozzie and bateman must have earned their selections. I hope they perform, but if they don't I hope future selections reflect that.

There's another thread for that. You've asked the question about 60 times now and no one has answered for a reason. Take the hint.

Haha, I'm glad someone has repeated what I said only a few hours ago, and he still continues!!

Extremely annoying

Now back to the thread, pretty happy with the team and wrapped for shiels and sav they have earned it 100% over the pre-season.

Interesting with no Goo in the lineup, I think we all expected suckers to be named (from hodgey's words) but what I'm wondering is if he has replaced Goo due to his huge improvement or Goo being injured:confused:

From all reports laddo has had a very good pre-season so hopefully he makes the most of it this week along with changa and Ozzy, cause the pressure is on fellas!!!

So pleased for Shiels - I've wanted to watch him in the team again for a long time, and I'm glad his work has been rewarded.

As others have said, I think playing Bailey solely in Melbourne might be on the money - I can't see the club risking him interstate just yet.

Can't wait for Saturday!

Apart from the fact that Laddo and Bateman are 2 of the better runners , decision makers and skilled playmakers on our list I can not see why they have been selected to play....

I'm tipping if they wern't selected we"d be talking about how we still have Laddo and Bateman to come into the side when fit and how awesome we"ll be with them in it.

Laddo has been injured and if I recall correctly was one of our better performed players in the final last year whilst been underdone.

Bateman changed to playing a tagging role 7 games in and did it to aplomb but of course didn't rack up as many DT points so obviously had a shocker.

Ozzy is an automatic in when fit and anybody who thinks otherwise better get used to it. Try playing in our forward line the way the ball has moved in there in the last 2 seasons. Very rarely plays a bad game, never stops competing, and one of the tougher guys to beat 1 on 1... But what do I know..

Count the amount of games we have lost in the past 3 seasons with Laddo, Chance, Youngy Birch and Ozzy in our side....

They are our core flankers and 1st picked in those roles when fit. Surprise surprise they are also part of our core elite distributors by foot and best runners in the team.

Bruce just adds further to that mix...Shiels and Savage round it off.

Yep I'm bemused as to why our top 6 runners have been selected.

Bateman, Bruce, Laddo, Youngy, Shiels, Savage....... Hmmmm I'm gunna give it some further thought and report back.....stay tuned!

Am not surprised with Suckling,in fact I expected it. I am of the opinion that Suckling will figure strongly in Clarkson's game plan.

I have to say i didnt expect it, though with his long kick it could be a very potent defensive weapon to clear the ball from the 50 and away from any collingwood style forward press.

Yes its good that some kids are coming into the side but Savage, shiels and Suckling are just basically scrappers they are not top quality players, up against guys like bernie vince, nathan van berlo, and scotty thompson they are going to be in real trouble, not having a fit Luke Hodge is a massive worry, mitchell, lewis, sewell and rioli are going to have to have big games or we are screwed, we are undoubtably the underdogs this week.

I think they need to elevate Tom Schneider once there's an injury and stick him in the forward pocket in place of Ossie if he doesn't perform. He looked quite evasive and sneaky in the preseason. Great to see Lisle as an emergency. Hopefully Big Moose can push for selection in the coming weeks. The only question mark for me is the backline. Not sure if Suckling is a great choice? I'd like to see Smith and Puopolo come into the team in the next couple of weeks.
Apart from that, pretty happy with the team. Has more speed about it. I totally agree with the comment about the players playing on reputation from 08. It's now 11. 3 years on and it's time to make changes. Go Hawks.

Given our historical inability to play well in Adelaide I'm finding it hard to see us winning without Hodge. I'm also concerned that our backline looks very fragile and undersized. (Stratton and Gibson are going to have to really be on their game to help out others.) I also would like to have seen Puopolo in the side ahead of a few older players. Also, it will be interesting to see who takes the kick-in duties. Suckling perhaps?

Anyway, good luck to the boys. A solid start to the season is critical if we are to be serious contenders.

Bateman changed to playing a tagging role 7 games in and did it to aplomb but of course didn't rack up as many DT points so obviously had a shocker.

Hawks need Bateman to be an offensive outside runner IMO. That is his best position (08 form) and a role the hawks are screaming out to have filled. If Bateman is playing as a tagger then that is just another midfielder that is adding nothing to the Hawks running game along side the rest of the one paced brigade.

A very interesting game.

Add to that the crows
I Maric 200 cm 101kg
B Vince 188 cm 89kg
P Dangerfeild 189 cm 92 Kg

Compared to our

Roughead 193 cm 100kg
Framklin 196cm 102kg

utilities
Hale 201 cm 102kg
Renouf 200cm 98 kg
Bruce 190cm 190cm 87kg (whos height seem to float around 190/193

Defence
Gibson 189cm 90kg
Birchall 193 cm 93kg (whos going to have to play to every cm of his height)
Stratton 189cm 82 km
Gilham 192cm 86kg

The crows look top heavy and it certainly looks like there trying to expose our lack of height. It means our forwards are going to lead out well and midfeild will have to have accurate passing skills ans hit them right on the bloody chest!

maybe not as bad as i first thought, still a concern though! We can win if the boys want to win GO HAWKAS.:thumbsu:
