Pretty sure he is going to the Saints, they have already met with him and offered him a 3 year deal... his manager on trade radio today said he is at least 60% there... which the saints themselves then retweeted

Yeah, that's pretty much a done deal by the sounds of it.

Does anyone think Deleney would be a lock in our best 22? Be a tough road to hoe, for a while at least. At Saints he would be straight in.

It seem GWS are interested in Shaw , sound good to me. Apparently they hope to trade with them Shaw<> Adams . Have to be icing for mine , Adams has another 10 years of footy in him. But Shaw is the right age to help them.

So no Adams or Shaw. Boowho. Shame if we have to go to the draft. Let loose Wells and get a shuffle going I say.

We are going to shop West but atm , I don't feel there is much love out there

Beg to disagree Catgirl, age is absolutely a factor in winning premierships. If you have the inclination look up the ages of our side on Grand Final day in 2007, and then the Prelim side from a week ago. The 2007 had a huge core of players in the prime age bracket - 23-27. Only 5 players older than that, and only ONE player on 30 years or older. Contrast that with the Prelim side, and the hole is in the prime age group - we just don't have enough of them right now. One reason we lost wasn't intensity, or effort, or will to win, it was bodies being physically unable what they used to do.

No mention of 2011, why is your 2007 argument more important.
We won flags in both years.

Cat girl specifically mentions 2011yet you give it a wide berth, again it doesn't fit into your argument.
How convenient

I'm genuinely optimistic about our chances next year, I think our young players have more improvement in them than any of the other top four sides.

Our inside midfield will not be elite, but if you look at our games this year we've been happy to concede clearances and work from the rebound, the slingshot game. Having said that we were monstered in the middle during both finals. Christensen needs to gain a little upper body muscle, looking at the Fremantle game he was tiny in comparison, extra strength will allow him to get a few more clearances a game. That, along with Caddy building his tank and being a full time midfielder, will give Selwood a little more support, but the big improvement will come from having big Dawson Simpson giving us better access to the ball.

We were statistically a top rebounding team in 2013, I don't see that changing as it will still be our game style focus, but with that improvement in clearances will make us far more competitive against the top sides. Rather than conceding clearances, we'll break even at worst.

I believe the key area we need to boost in our midfield for next year is pressure. If we had been able to tag Sam Mitchell half as effectively (but cleanly) as Crowley did in the Grand Final, he would not have been able to get so many kicks clear into Hawthorn's forwardline. As a midfield group they need to increase pressure, but I also think we need a run with player to help nullify the impact of the oppositions best midfielder, and that will have to be Taylor Hunt or George Horlin-Smith. I would love to see Geelong's midfield run out in Round 1 (or the NAB Cup) and be as physically intimidating as we were in 2007, 08, 09 and 10, a team that other teams feared to play. This doesn't mean being dirty and unsportsmanlike (Fremantle), just hard and ruthless. I think it's necessary to apply this pressure to compensate for our inside midfield, apart from Selwood, not being elite in skills or clearances.

However our other lines are very much in the elite category. Lonergan didn't have a great year, and finding his replacement for 2015 or '16 should be a top priority, but Rivers will be better next year, more used to the Geelong way, and Taylor is a genuine superstar. Cameron Guthrie is probably the best young player on our list, and along with Thurlow and Bews getting games next year while Mackie and Bartel move onto the wing and forwardline, I think our small and mid-sized defenders are not only stable but bordering on being the best in the competition.

Our forwardline is a question mark; the forwards could work together well and Hawkins be fit, and we have the potentially most damaging forwardline in the competition. The flipside is also true. Against Fremantle the forwardline was totally dysfunctional, leading on top of each other and blocking each others runs. This will hopefully come with experience working together.

I honestly think we're safe going into the future, we have a lot of young talent coming through, and we need to feed them as many games as we can in the next year or two. Our big need in the next two drafts is a Lonergan replacement and as many quality young midfielders as we can get our hands on to really put pressure on our midfielders internally.

Let's hope that we get waaaay better results from players grabbed from other clubs than we have in the past. Not something we've done overly well compared to the Swans and Hawks for instance.

The Wells Shuffle has worked before , and when it comes to getting value wilth slightly lower picks The Wizard is the man

My query is on the players we've picked up from other clubs. Frankly, our record is poor.

The shuffle I'm talking about is with picks , eg

when we traded P33 <> and ended with P40 & P42 (Christensen and Vardy) in 2009
when we traded P26 <> and ended with P32 and P34 (Hamling and Kersten) in 2011

Both times the players taken with early picks looked no better or in fact less than our picks.

If we could trade P15 with GC for P18 and 23 or with GWS for 19 and 21 etc , Id be more than happy. Id even be willing to wangle a player into it if the deal was good enough

Yeah Wellsy does it all the time.

  • In 09 he swapped pick 33 for 40, 42 and 56 = Allen Christensen, Nathan Vardy and Josh Cowan.
  • In 10 he traded Jeremy Laidler and 41 for picks 36 and 53 = Hyphen and Schroeder.
  • In 11 he traded pick 26 for 32 and 34 = Joel Hamling and Shane Kersten.
And in 08 he turned Prismall into Motlop via pick 39 though that doesn't really count.

So he turned pick 26, 33, 41, Prismall and Laider into -> Motlop, Christensen, Vardy, Cowen, Hyphen, Schroeder, Hamling and Kersten. :hearts: Increasing both quality and quantity! :hearts::hearts:

Mike Sheahan just said Geelong are making a major play for Heath Shaw OTC.

Last week , he has the Hawk coach as an Eagle. He said it would be a great get for the Cats. Not convinced we will get him or that it would be a great get. Where is he penciled to play for us BP ? No it would only make sense if he could pull his weight further up field. Why hasn't the Pies used him like that .

What do you guys think of our chances of snaring Darcy Gardner in the draft?
I heard his name come up as the best Key back of the draft and as a local boy......
I saw a bit of him through the year and he looks the goods but would he go too high?

If all three were to leave, Geelong would free up some space in the salary cap to accommodate a player such as Shaw, who is understood to be on about $400,000 a year for the next two years of his contract. The Cats' first-round draft pick would be likely to be required for any trade.
Yeah nah. Is it just me, or is there absolutely no sense to all of this?

Our chances?

Personal opinion....low in our current position.

Even harder if we do actually go after Shaw who might use up our first round pick.

I'd suggest we'd need to trade up into the top 12 to have a shot (and that is me being optimistic as I think he is a top 10'er).

Then again, I didn't think Grundy would get to us last year, let alone passed us.

Curiouser and curiouser... I would say Shaw is a direct replacement of sorts for Monica. Having said that - a large bone of contention between Buckley and Shaw was his desire to play in the midfield. We already have enough outside runners in the midfield. But if somehow we manage to snag Adams who is as someone said earlier a clearance pig they could tandem very well together.

Scott is either going full Crazy Vossy or full Lethal Matthews.... time will tell...

Pretty sure I heard today on trade week radio that Geelong has offered Chapman a 10 game contract for next year. But he was none to happy about it. It seems about right. They want to develop the kids but would love him for the big games. It also means that we probably won't lose him for free, and a club would trade for him or we get free agency compo
