Forgot to mention this (not sure if common knowledge) when I heard the Voss interview a few weeks back, and since we're not currently discussing our players contract status anyway.....

Brisbane were the first club to entertain the thought of signing Lachie Keeffe b/c it was a free hit as a cross from another code. We took him in, showed him the club / facilities etc...put a contract offer to him. At the last minute the Pies asked him to simply do a tour of their club; GAME OVER!!!

When I heard that WC showed Yeo there facilities I knew he was gone. It is an indictment on the club and needs to be fixed ASAP. It just shows that we need business and can develop them as athletes. I would love to see us bring in some other players this year that are above the standard of ALL the players, bar the draft, we have recently.

Leppa did state that we are going to home grow our list but also added that we will be adding to the edges with experienced trade ins. We are still a few pieces short of a premiership team, namely a KPF but also a KPD who is around the 24-26 year old bracket IMO. We can't rely on Clarke and Gardiner to be our main defenders in 2 or 3 years time... they would be like 23 and 21 years old far too young to be competitive week in week out.

More on the trade front but we need IMO is a classy midfielder with pace and some x factor who is capable of breaking lines and scoring 4 goals in a match. WHE from GWS may be gettable from next year or even someone like Shaw from the Suns who would be far cheaper while still providing that run and good kicking we are missing.

So it seems we will be seriously up against it to secure a decent free agent…..

Have read a few post suggesting we make some moves on GCS and GWS discards. Two questions: Who do we think might be a chance? and what could we possibly offer GCS and GWS in return apart from our first or second round draft picks?

The question is not whether we can attract a big free agent next season, it's whether we want to.
Looking at a list of 2014 free agents, there's not a whole lot there. With the exception of Gibbs and Frawley, there are a lot of players who are either old, injury prone or both. Shaun Higgins could be an interesting one if he could stay on the field like he has so far this season.
Apart from that, do we really want someone like Shane Edwards or Leroy Jetta?
Of course, Jake King could be a massive recruit for the club. We'll get some great publicity out of him being arrested under the anti-bikie laws.

I agree. And the guys you mentioned, I don't think any of them would consider a Lions a destination, unless it was purely for the money, although we wouldn't be the only ones that could afford them. I wouldn't have thought Gibbs would leave for anywhere but SA and Frawley you'd think would only go somewhere that was in contention for a flag.

None of this years crop of available free agents are the right fit I wouldn't have thought.

From GWS, there's really only O'Rourke, Jaksch and Plowman (who recently signalled he intends to stay) that are good prospects and out of contract AFAIK.

Would love to use our PSD pick to get someone or maybe trade someone in if they'll add anything at all really, a couple of mature (23-26yo) flankers would be extremely handy for mine, even as depth, just to be ready made additions (or depth) and allow the likes of Hanley to spend more time up the ground. Will back our midfield in as I like the young blokes and I highly doubt we'd be able to lure an A-grader up here. Easier said than done, of course.

I can't remember where, but I did read that Jonathon Patton's contract was up this year and we were going to throw the cheque book at him.

back on topic... has anyone got a free agent list for the AFL? This would play a significant part in our list management this year with ceratin players careers hanging in the balance depending on what we can bring into the team I would think

From December so some off the table by now: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-12-11/the-big-free-agency-targets-in-2014
Not that much there for us I reckon and can't see us attracting too many at this stage anyway. Leppa might have some extra pull with Richmond players so maybe Shane Edwards.

Just found he is contracted to the end of 2016

There were mixed articles at the time saying both 2015 and 2016, but it looked like it ended up being 2015.

Will be Leppa's first off season fully in charge and after getting to know the playing list a bit. TBH, I think with not much on the FA table, we can have a bit of a stability year. Bring in another couple of high draft picks, few retirements and delistings of players not in future plans, lock and load for next year.

Yep, there's no magic bullet. It's already been mentioned that the Lions were wooden spooners in 98 and premiers 3 years later but also people should also remember that the bulk of the Hawthorn team that finished 2nd last in 2004 were in the premiership team in 2008 and that's success that they've managed ever since. The difference between players and ladder positions is really tiny as much as it may look otherwise. I think Leppa's build it plan is good.

Kyle Martin would be a decent pick up for this club IMO. Great addition to the midfield/HFF.

- Debuted last year and had immediate impact, unlikely he'll play many games this year as Collingwood have plenty of his type.
- Only 23 years old with 4 games experience.
- Great inside skill set, good overhead mark and can kick over fifty meters.
- Fantastic goal sense and ability to find space inside the fifty.
- Won the VFL Collingwood B&F

Yep, he'd be a good pickup. Always liked him from the few games I've seen and he's definitely an AFL quality player. Wouldn't cost much and he'd be looking to move on for more opportunity. Have a feeling he may be contracted until the end of next year, not sure.

There is absolutely no chance of us signing a gun in free agency. We couldn't get Riewoldt back to QLD, when we were at the top. Unless we pay massive overs, we are never going to sign any quality players from other sides. No one is going to relocate to Brizzie in a poor side. Possible fringe players (looking for opportunity, maybe), but nothing more. We need to focus on the draft, re-sign the good youngsters we have and make the most of our picks for the next 3-4 years.

I would like us to copy what Melbourne did last season. If possible trade pick 1 for pick 5 and 8 (or something similar, like a previous 1st rounder) and get two quality players instead of the best.

Would normally be for this idea but given this season is a highly touted KPP draft, we're desperately lacking and are likely to finish bottom 3 (where the best options will be, granted it's looking like a bit of a raffle from 1-5 at the moment) I think we'd be mad to trade away our first pick.

But I think Melbourne's path was a wise way to accelerate the rebuild.

Given how much talent GWS have for example, they would love another pick 1 in their monster side. They may have say Pick 3 and many fringe gun youngers. I don't see why we wouldn't be aggressive and say we'll offer you Pick 1 for Pick 3 and someone like Hoskin-Elliot.

Everyone is saying we need a gun KPP and they are 100% correct, but we are terrible in all areas. I say pick the best possible!!
