So it seems we will be seriously up against it to secure a decent free agent…..

Have read a few post suggesting we make some moves on GCS and GWS discards. Two questions: Who do we think might be a chance? and what could we possibly offer GCS and GWS in return apart from our first or second round draft picks?

We'll always be in the picture b/c we have the cap space to offer 5 year / 5 million dollar contract for the right player; that'd turn any players head :thumbsu:

That being said, it'd take negotiating of the highest order

Given how much talent GWS have for example, they would love another pick 1 in their monster side. They may have say Pick 3 and many fringe gun youngers. I don't see why we wouldn't be aggressive and say we'll offer you Pick 1 for Pick 3 and someone like Hoskin-Elliot.

Everyone is saying we need a gun KPP and they are 100% correct, but we are terrible in all areas. I say pick the best possible!!

If we got an offer like that I'd definitely take it and run! I just more meant I'd be wary of trading pick 1-2 for say, pick 5 and 15. It'd be good any other year but I think this year we need to stay as high as we possibly can.

Still, if it was a pick 1 for pick 3 and a highly rated youngster, given the top few prospects all seem like they'd be very handy I'd be keen.

Like we did with Longer over Tomlinson? Polec over Tom Lynch? We could have had a great forward line now, kills me when I look back and think we could have had Lynch & Tomlinson. We desperately need a key forward and we'll take one with our first pick.

Nah... they probably would have left as well haha

By memory Day went pick 3, so we couldn't have got him, but Lynch yes. Wish we all had that hindsight though. Imagine how good our list would be :)

That being said, I agree our recruiting (outside of last season), has been very, very poor for over 10 seasons now.

We'll take the blokes who want to return to Queensland if they're any good, apart from that, no-one. We're going to build the talent within.

Disagree; we've picked players in previous drafts that complimented what the original plan was. This plan included Henderson at CHB and Mitch Clark at CHF moving forward. Things change. We'd look a whole lot better if they we're in our lineup.

The recent drafts have been fruitful too; it's just the club, as a whole, is poorly run with no money to spend in key departments and we gave them every reason to leave, which they did. Not the recruiters fault. Don't expect 2013 to be the last exodus of our young talent either; every chance that last years crop has already been spoken to by the bigger clubs (which could be any of 17 in all honesty)...

Sounds good. Worked nicely for Melbourne/GWS last year so i can't see why they wouldn't do it again. Buntine, Bugg, Sumner, Jaksch and Elliot are all potential players that could be offered up for trade at the end of the year. If i were to pick one i'd be Jaksch, especially if we end up drafting another promising tall with our first pick - two talls for the price of one. :)

If definitely has to be a combination and if we do finish last this year, our first pick in the PSD becomes just as interesting as our first draft pick.

Very rare that you get a gun for free in the PSD but you have to at least try. In these days of 2 expansion teams with lists bursting with talent and good players desperate for opportunity, who knows what situation might present itself. Especially with our salary cap space.

Even if we don't pull off a PSD coup, and have to trade in players, you still have to wield that PSD pick like a weapon to leverage better deals. Shame we've lost Kerr. He was a shrewd tactical negotiator and it would have been interesting to see what he would have done with a #1 PSD pick.

IMO it is far more likely that other clubs will use the threat of our 1st pick in the PSD as a threat - "if you don't sign/agree to be traded to who we want you to, you will have to go to Brisbane & train in a tin shed".

We hardly train in a tin shed it's just that our ground and training facilites need an up grade hence why the CEO wants us to move to Springfield

My top secret (not really) information that i got from one of Brisbane's key Scouts (dad's mate) - is that:
Lisle/Martin - Out
T. Goldsack - Target

Dayne beams and lachlan O'Keeffe when they are out of contract. Throw the cheque book at them I say. Bring the QLD talent home!!

Sounds realistic, would Goldsack really want to leave Collingwood for a slight $ increase though? He's still pretty comfortably best 22 there.

One player from the pies I would be interested in is Kyle Martin, pretty sure he is out of contract, He is been inn solid for pies ressies and would be a good fit lions....any thoughts?

I'd keep Martin and try him at FB or CHB he's got the athleticism to maybe make a decent go in defence.

I'd just keep Martin on the list as ruck depth (and if we're incredibly desperate, CHF/CHB depth). Doubt he'd cost much and is a more than capable first ruck. Archie will take a couple of years so I think Leuey + West + Martin until then will hold the fort well.

I'd be keen and I reckon he's one who might move for more senior opportunities. Can definitely see a spot for him on an HFF with midfield rotations in our unit. Is a great age (23 with years of VFL experience), has a good eye for the goals (6 in 4 AFL games last season and 10 in 4 VFL games this season) and his skills are solid to good from what I've seen.

I think it'd make sense long term too as he's definitely a clearance midfielder who can cause trouble up forward in the VFL, averaged 25 disposals and 8 clearances last season. You'd hope he could grow into that mould at AFL level and he fits our versatility profile well you'd imagine.

Haven't gotten the chance to watch him in the VFL this season myself but I'll be keeping an eye on him I reckon, seems a very realistic target who'd offer something to the team. I guess the issue is if he thinks he'll start getting a lot of senior games for the Pies soon or is very settled in Melbourne.

.

For me it's Michael vs Martin for a spot on the senior list.

That's a fair call and I'd agree that Michael is worth persisting with more than Martin. I just feel like if say, Martin had West's role at the moment we'd see a lot more from him than we have to date at the Lions.

I'd take Martin over Michael for the simple fact that he has at least shown that he can ruck well enough at the top level. I'm
Not excited about Michael to say the least.

From what I've gleaned from the reserves thread and the little we have seen of him, he is more of a bash and crash type ruck/forward that will be in the mould of someone like Leigh Brown. A very different prospect to someone like Martin IMO.

Additionally, If you think about how unexciting yet vital part of the team that kind of role is, coupled with the fact we have no one else on our list really capable of developing into that role, Michael seems well worth persisting with and continuing with his football education.

So far this season Kyle Martin has averaged over 23 touches in a game, in VFL you think he would get more oportunities at the lions.

Yeah, definitely think he would, just wonder if he's happy in Melbourne playing VFL and being a Collingwood rookie at his age. Is a Noble Park boy so would probably have his roots well and truly in Victoria. But still, worth having a crack I reckon, right age profile and we'd give him a senior list spot no doubt. Would be a fair payrise.
