Absolutely. But the ethos and mindset for kids learning the game is very different from adult professional athletes getting paid millions. I'm all for kids running around and enjoying themselves. But once it becomes your job, it's not unreasonable to expect results.
Totally.

Results are important.

But how you get them, and what you measure as most important, are also vital.

In the end, it seems through history, that lots of nice guys win.

In fact depending on your world view, some would say (me) that in the long run what is right and true, will always, without exception, win out.

He did.

Picked the ball up n his follow through and hurled it at the batsman........who had stepped well away from the wicket coincidentally

I reckon that's a very light penalty.
If he'd done that in local cricket he would having a nice little holiday; and depending upon who the batsman was, he might also have had some more immediate problems.

The batsman was Mark Craig.

What makes it worse is that this isn't the first time.

Quite light when match payments aren't that high. Most of his cash would come from his contract and endorsements.

I haven't had a chance to watch much cricket this week. That's shocking to hear- and embarrassing for the Aussies.

Really? Doubly embarrassing. I'd stand him down for the second test just to send him a strong message- and let him know why, in no uncertain terms- but I bet the Aussie selectors won't do that.
Reminiscent of Hodge, a little.

I dunno..... 14k for 5 days work seems like pretty good money to me :D

It's been a bit overblown...
He threw it at his toes.

I played cricket for many years, I often had balls thrown "to the keeper" which I happened to be in the way of and zero ever came from it.
If a bowler did what Starc did, by throwing it at my toes I would have smiled and asked him if maybe he could aim like that when he bowls next time.

Deliberately throwing the ball at a batsman nearly 2m wide of the stumps, standing in his crease, would be an automatic suspension in any comp I've ever played in, as it should be. Particularly if he had prior form, as this obnoxious sook does. Against some teams I've played, it would also, understandably, result in him copping a bat around his ears.

Understandably? a bat around the ears???

Settle Fred.....

Having watched Starc hits the stumps plenty of times when bowling it is obvious his radar is fine.

He pinged it at the batsman, pure and simple. He didn't even have the pretence of aiming at the stumps to get the guy back in his ground.

Dumb act.

He bowls at 150km/h. If he was that annoyed, bounce the batsman next ball or, better yet, aim for his armpit or throat.

It would have been fended off and hopefully caught and Starc could have sent him on his way. It is a win for the bowler and the team then.

Anyway, and I totally know I contributed to this , unless Scooter plays cricket perhaps we should leave the leather and willow discussion for the right threads. :D

I've thought for a long time, batsmen worldwide need to stand up for themselves far more. Too many are far too easily intimidated.

If a bowler hurls it at you after the ball is bowled, smash it into the stands. Same goes for the nonstop 'banter' - if they don't stop talking, don't take strike. It's pretty simple.

He was fined 1/2 his pay, which was reported (variously) as a fine of $7700 to $8300, which would make the $1400 per day the 1/2 pay, roughly.
Yep I heard half his match fee being a 7k fine

I'm no mathematical genius but I'm reasonably sure that works out to be 14k total match fee :D

I've seen a couple of batsmen actually do that, then be given out for Obstructing the Field. Unfortunately, it's probably correct, technically.

Personally, before they took the easy way out with umpires failing to enforce the Laws against illegal intimidatory bowling and chucking, ie by legalising them, I always thought it would be easy to solve the problem of illegal intimidatory bowling; every time the bowler illegally bowled the ball at the batsman, allow the batsman to chuck the bat at the bowler or some other fieldsman. The problem would have gone away instantly.

If the ball is dead though, I don't think it can be obstructing the field. It shouldn't be anyway. Totally agree at how gutless umpires have been for a generation. Backed up by an even more insipid administration.

True, but it's usually not dead when the bowler pings it at the batsman. It wasn't when Starc did it, or the overthrows couldn't have counted.
