Carlisle- granted he went through turbulent times, yes he's tall, agile and skillful. But the voices of recruitment have repeatedly said character amounts to something important too at the all new st kilda and that's- heart, brains and balls. At this time I judge Carlisle to struggle to prove he has them. In my humble and often misguided opinion Goddard would dwarf him. Much desired = over rated. But, if he's ours then in Richo we trust.

Up until a couple of months ago the was no talk of Carlisle being of bad character. Once Essendon supporters found out he wanted to leave it seems that in their twisted logic it was a case of "he must have bad character if he wants to leave the mighty Bombers". So, for this reason, the perception became an accepted truth.

But anyone outside the Essendon Football Club could see that he was just a young bloke that had no job satisfaction in his current work place and wanted a new job. Then followed unfounded rumours that he MAY have had some sort of relationship with the sister of a Buldogs player (so what!!?) and then came the typical Big Footy questions like "maybe he likes the occasional $&@! (Just add vice of choice) and all of a sudden Carlisle has a reputation for being of bad character.

Several clubs are chasing him hard, so, personally, I doubt there is anything wrong with his character.

The only reasons we won't take him will be because he chooses another club, or we can't manufacture a mutually satisfactory trade for him.

Who doesn't remember the 1997 Grand Final when Peter Everitt and Lazar Vidovic smashed the Crows's loan ruckman in Shaun Rhen to deliver the Saints our second flag?

Lucky we had healthy ruck stocks that day!

Let's keep Hickey.
Lose your two first choices from any position on the ground and you're gonna struggle to win a gf
e.g
Hawks without McEvoy and Hale
Hawks without Roughead and Rioli/Gunston
Hawks without Mitchell and Hodge
Hawks without Lake and Frawley/Gibson
any of those combos and they'd struggle to beat the Swans last year

Jon Ralph on Fox Footy -

Bennell being wined and dined by the Tigers.

Stevie J to Suns, Blues or Tigers.

Melbourne still working on Jesse Hogan's new contract.

No other trade news.

What a useless campaigner...

Stevie J would be a perfect fit for Freo.. +30 goals a year is what they need. Blues don't need him, Tigers maybe... Suns would just be a Pension top up.

Travel is always going to be a consideration for Melbourne based players, who are settled in their home and area.
If its true Carlisle lives in Moonee Ponds it is a 14min drive to Princes Park, compared to 52min to Seaford. No body enjoys sitting in a car for hours each day just to get to work. Even if we were at Moorabbin the trip would only be about 10mins shorter. So there is a lot more at play than money or the club IMO! To play for us there is a lot more personal impact than if he goes to Carlton or Bulldogs.

I hear what BS and co are saying but there can only be one reason he hasnt said he wants to come to the Saints, is we are not his first preference and he is trying to squeeze more money out of his more preferred clubs!
He has been away for a few weeks. Next week should be the end of the talk

pass on Carlisle. massive tosser. no second hand info there.

understand his potential is mouth watering in regards to our spine and development, and that many successful teams have acquired questionable characters, but aspiring for our team chemistry to be the best in the comp is massive for laying the challenge down to GC/GWS/Dogs/Pies.

go the Josh Bruce route on top of more draft steals with retained picks.

Just wonder if the club environment he was in caused his tosserness, if that's true, but a move to a club that is goodness( saints) will fix him up. I reckon Richo might be the man o do that

ASS it the beginning of assumption, massive call on someone's character that you probably have never met, as has been said , there weren't issues up until yr 3 of the drugs scandal.

Just knowing how important character is to our recruiting should tell us something about Carlisle.

Or we may be making a terrible decision. What do I know anyway
Alan Richardson coached him at Essendon for a year and Rooey's best mate BJ, who still loves his Sainters, has played with him for 3 years now. I reckon they would have a much better idea than most about what his character is like.

If Richo for one thought it was no good, do we really believe we'd be going after him like we are?

As much a dickhead that purple flog is he's usually spot on most the time
Yep, I'd back him in over most, despite his awful personality. He hasn't been voted best at what he does by his journalistic peers for 8 years in a row now because of his sparkling personality and warmth!

No there was, especially so when he was running around getting a game telling opposition players how he couldn't wait to get out of there and completely pissing on the club and players he was playing for and with. That people are conveniently putting to one side when his character gets questioned as his talent overrides his ability to completely shit on in public a few hundred people.

After all, let's not forget the chorus that erupted when the WADA stuff first happened and how quickly all and sundry were telling those nobody ex players moved on how shit they were and suddenly they're disgruntled with Essendon and it's less of a character flaw because it's 2-3 years later?

I trust the club will make the right call, but consider me surprised at the amount of people playing this down as minimally as possible because he's talented.

And in 2009 we had Gardener and King ,
We were short 2 midfielders that year .

We were short a competent umpiring panel that can see a ball bounce off a pole at right angles and about 4 fresh air swings 45m out from our goal because we were apparently that good in '99. In '97 we were short someone copping a ban and completely poleaxing Jarman before he tore us a new one, and in '10 we were short threatening to bomb every medical practice in existence if they assisted Collingwood in any capacity.

Barrett pretty rarely gets it wrong and when he is its always been because of his sources being wrong another otherwise lying.

His opinion is a different matter but he is a good journalist.

We were short of guys that didn't butcher the ball that day, in front of goal and field kicking.
That's why I'm keen for Pelchin's 'good kick only' policy to follow on, post his time at our club.

Over 40 years on this earth.......Just once Saints......PLEASE!

Carlisle would of been living close enough to drive to tullamarine. If he joins the Saints he'd move to St kilda or Brighton and put up with a 30 minute drive till we get Moorabbin built. Does anyone know how the Moorabbin build is progressing haven't seen any plans are they going to buy up the old bowls club.

You'd have to back the club with thier judgement on this one, surely, If there was an issue, BJ would have told Roo by now.

As far as him pissing on his club... probably saying what most players are thinking. Essendon through their deeds have not only ****ed up players careers, but possible also ****ed up their mental health. whilst the players bought in, they had the wool pulled over their eyes and Essendope are lucky that they are not facing a class action suit... yet.

He's filthy on the club and he wants out... as did / does others like Ryder, Monfries, Crameri, Melksham and co... and no doubt as does BJ.

If dumping on his club is his worse crime, then I'll cop it.
