They way I see it we were happy to trade down to 7 for a reason, and that is of the players on our ranked list between 3 and 8 we had them all approximately equal and we are not super fussed with which one falls to our pick and might even be prepared to pick on 'needs' (if we rank their future maximum level as equal, then you can do that without compromising your principles).
I suspect they may be a nod and wink going on between us and Gold Coast: "You leave one, or both, depending on what Carlton do, of our first preferences on the table, and we won't bid on Bowes". That way they can take him at pick 10 (or 9 if Sydney bid) and have an extra live pick in the top 8.
Combine that with the average of the scuttlebutt I think we can say with 95% confidence its going to be SPS or English we take. With the latter more likely purely because I think Carlton are a strong possibility to take SPS.

If Carlton or Gold Coast steal SPS before our pick... but we get him back after two years... was it really stealing?

I don't think we'll get SPS back if Carlton or Gold Coast pick him up. I remember reading a few things before Bennell was drafted about him wanting to stay in WA, hence he had the 'go home factor'. But SPS has openly stated about wanting to be in Melbourne, so it's a vastly different circumstance. He won't come back to WA like others just "to be around family' because his family isn't in Perth they're up in Halls Creek (about as far away from Perth you can get while still being in WA).

But if he does come back for some reason, then it's more like a borrow then a steal.

Anyone reckon you are a chance to reach for Battle in the first round?

Might sound crazy but you always have late bolters and I know he was invited to the draft. I'm thinking the two most likely to want a KPF would be you guys, or Gold Coast considering they have four picks. Then there is Carlton who draft weirdly so who knows.

I realise it's a bit 'out there' but just wanted to gauge a reaction.

I'm a bit doubtful.

Firstly we did obtain two new KPF in the trade season in McCarthy and Kersten, so the chances of drafting for someone in that position will be decreased.

and secondly Battle is a big jump. I think that if freo were to go after a KPF in the draft Todd Marshall would be the better option.

Really there is no 100% accurate way at knowing who freo will draft but I would be very surprised if we did draft Battle, especially if Marshall and English are still on the board. I think it'll be smart for freo to draft a KPF somewhere in the draft, but preferably latter.

I've seen him around the 20-30 spot in most mocks so we may pick him up if he slides (which is very unlikely).

Do you see Kersten and McCarthy as genuine KPF's? I always kind of thought of McCarthy as an oversized flanker whilst Kersten is probably closer to the mark but a bit more of a long shot to make the grade.

Yeah fair enough. Marshall seems to be one that splits opinion, some don't rate him at all while others seem very keen. There always seems to be late bolters into the top ten or so (Marchbank, Harry McKay, Cripps - well almost at 13). Will be interesting to see where Battle ends up.

Succesful tall forwards taken anywhere outside the top 15 are rare. Excluding f/s and academies.

These current players are outside that lot:
Kurt Tippett
Jack Gunston
Justin Westhoff
Sam Reid (Sydney)
Ben Brown
Jack Darling
Josh Jenkins

That's not to name older examples, where drafting was less scientific, or others who are looking promising at the moment but will hold off calling. Given the lack of outstanding forwards ATM in the game, that's not a bad percentage, although it also suggests you need to be patient with their development. This also doesn't pick up the forwards (eg Alex Pearce) who have then made it as defenders.

If you were comparing say Hayward to Marshall (strange as it is for two very different players) both have had brilliant flashes in the pan, but Marshall has the components (ability to take a contested mark, good long kick) at his core to succeed as a KP forward, so for mine that offers better potential and also versatility.

At any rate though, Marshall hasn't got an invite to the draft in person, so I suspect it is likely he will slip till past pick 20.

McCarthy is a genuine FF and our forward line will be built around him. Kersten not so much.

I think very little chance of getting Battle but we are every chance for Logue.

Who has been invited to the draft?

Of those names I can only see Battle being the big slider, all the rest should go by 25ish. Although a few drafts have Galluci/Sympkin sliding I just don't see it. Marshall probably will get a late invite.

Who i want us to get with our 7 , Taranto (almost no chance he will be there but he is the one i would want the most), Petrevski-seton (The only way i can see us getting him is if Brodie goes to Carlton at 5, which is possible), Logue (good chance he will be there but if I was to take him SPS would definitely have to be gone), Battle (a big stretch but i would prefer battle over English or many other talls in the draft, purely because i think he will end up being the best Forward in this Draft and I could see him fighting for a spot in our best 22 next year if we took him, where as English would definitely not and we would be waiting a couple of years to see what he can do at AFL level. Just my opinion so no hate lol

Curious if list managers have any room for a medium half forward or if they draft a player like Hayward planning to build up his midfield minutes to above half his total time knowing that he is handy forward when "resting" there.

Trend seems to be that if you're above 194cm or below 179cm you can live in the forward fifty but everyone between plays as a midfield rotation.

Collingwood just paid a sjitload for a 188cm forward.

I think diversity is the trend. A few years back all your midfielders had to be 188cm+ and mids under 180cm didn't get drafted. Now you need 1 big bodied mid blended with smalls and mediums. Same in the defence and the forward line. The best teams from last year had a good blend of types and sizes, inside and outside, all across the ground.
