Matt Shaw and Dan Currie have to have been some of the luckiest players in history. Not to have a go at them but they have done well to survive this long.
Matt Shaw has frustrated me since they started I think he could be AFL standard but he needs someone to grow him as a footballer and build in some toughness and tackling nouse as well

One Thing
To say about of all the members of this forum that SunsBhoy allows emotion to cloud his thinking is about as wrong as it gets.
If anyone in here knows their stuff it’s SunsBhoy and Thurls.

You've misquoted me, mate. I didn't say "all of the members on this forum", I said "everyone who maintains that the trade period was a bust".

I've read a lot from all sides and I think its great that there are so many passionate fans. If it helps to clarify my post, we are all just spuds on the sidelines and I'm prepared to be proven wrong. I think the list decisions and the trades have shown that Clayton and Dew have huge balls to trade away potential 18yos for ready to go players and future picks.

I very much hope now for a couple of decent young players at #19 and #40, one or two DFAs, plus Suns Academy players through later picks and the Rookie Draft, with maybe a reprieve for Mac Willis thrown in.

yep, very well said and you also now know we are chasing some mature talent in the DFA period with the further delistings ans spots vacant now to distribute through drafting new talent and mature talent and rookies

Who are these DFA’s Thurls ? Am I right in saying if swallow is not delisted either tonight or tommorow North are going to honour there contract with him?

He could also be a preseason draft selection

The 3 traded players and DFA pickup we got last year turned out really well. With the 12 players traded/or delisted, you'd have to say the 3 players acquired during the trade won't be enough, so probably 2 DFAs would get the balanced just right. Excellent point about mature talent as there will be some older guys available who have the physical advantage over the 18 yos.

By my count, there are 36 players now on the Suns list. Room for 4 on the Senior list and 7 rookies. Could be wrong.

I miscounted 1 senior spot but I still have 5 senior spots available.

Here’s what I have...

2017: 40 senior listed

Delisted:
M.Hallahan
J.Grant
T.McKenzie
M.Shaw
M.Willis
D.Currie
K.Brooksby (rookie)
C.Leorsch (rookie)
R.Davis (rookie)

Traded out:
Ablett
Saad
Matera

9 senior listed out.

Traded in:
Wigg
Young
Weller

Rookie upgrade:
D.MacPherson

Leaving 5 senior spots available for DFA & draft if we take the maximum 40 senior listed again in 2018.

Draft:
3 x draft
2 x DFA

+ rookies

Having a hard look at our list now with these delistings , we are light on for small defenders with Saad and Willis gone , only really leaves Harbs and Joyce , I know young academy kid Boakye has played this role , wonder if he is earmarked for a rookie spot now all this is unfolded.

I believe so yes and I am not convinced it will be him we go after I think we will pull in three mature recruits and maybe one of them is using a draft pick

Max spencer?

Max spencer?
Trent McKenzie replacement for mine - should be upgraded to senior list along with MacPherson .
Makes my round 1 team based on his finish to last year - has that Steven May spoil perfected....

Haven't logged on for a while
Just came in for the DFA news
Disappointed TMac didn't get an opportunity under a new coach- the rest understandable
Always sad to leave players
So
Who's left from the Rivers of Gold 2009 pre-listed 12 17yo's and the 2010 draft that was going to deliver us 15,000 members and a premiership in 2015?;)
Dave Swallow Tom Lynch and maybe Sam Day
Eddy and the Victorian AFL mafia didn't need to worry so much eh
Pretty awful feeling tonight

Two things.

First, you're letting emotion get in the way of rational thinking. The Suns didn't need another crapshoot high draft pick. You name me some champions who came at pick #2 and I'll show you ice as many disappointing picks who either washed out or flamed out. Weller is a known quantity with 3 years experience who is ready to play now. He's also a Suns Talent Academy product and that is golden for the team's future. He'll be captain one day and it will be because of his commitment to the team and the city.

Second, you are second guessing paid professionals who have watched thousands of hours of tape. Sure, they get it wrong a lot of the time, but you're just a spud on the sidelines. You can get angry and spew pages of vitriol about how bad the Suns recruiters are, but you're never prepared to be wrong and admit it. This forum is an echo chamber sometimes and everyone who maintains that the trade period was a bust just proves that they are allowing emotion to cloud their judgement. Agree or not, the Suns recruitment has actually been inspired at times and the list is very, very talented. Results came in the false dawn of 2014 with Ablett at the peak of his powers, but the team has since proven it can't play sustained high quality footy without him. Replacing his experience and brilliance won't happen with just Weller, but he's a damn sight better than a raw 18 year who may or may not excel at the very top level.

I respect your opinion and all those who are spooked by the ballsy moves made during the trade. I disagree that Weller would have been there for the taking in a year and clearly the Suns management do too.
2001 pick 2 - Luke Ball - 1x AA midfielder, 1x CLub B&F, Club Captain 2006 - 07, 1x Premiership player
2002 pick 2 - Daniel Wells - 2x Club B&F

2003 pick 2 - Andrew Walker - Good player without being exceptional. did have a 56 goal season in 2011
2004 pick 2 - Jarryd Roughhead - 4x Premiership player, Club Captain, 2x AA Forward, 1x Coleman medal
2005 pick 2 - Dale Thomas - 1x Premiership player, 1x AA Winger
2006 pick 2 - Scott Gumbleton - ruined by injury
2007 pick 2 - Trent Cotchin - 1x Brownlow Medal, 1x Premiership player, 1x AA midfielder, 1x AFLCA player of the year, 3x Club B&F. Club Captain
2008 pick 2 - Nic Naitanui - 1x AA Ruckman, rising star nominee 2009. injury prone

2009 pick 2 - Jack Trengove - Melbourne Co-Captain 2012 - 13. Career derailed by multiple navicular fractures
2010 pick 2 - Harley Bennell - Off field issues and calf problems have seen him miss too much playing time. Still one of the most talented players in the AFL.
2011 pick 2 - Stephen Coniglio - A Grade mid. Gets a lot less hype because of who else plays in that team.
2012 pick 2 - Jonathon O'Rourke - Only genuinely poor choice of the lot so far
2013 pick 2 - Josh Kelly - 1x AA Midfielder, 1x Club B&F, Rising star nomination
2014 pick 2 - Christian Petracca - Rising Star nomination

2015 pick 2 - Josh Schache - too early to tell. Looks good but obviously struggled playing in Queensland
2016 pick 2 - Tim Taranto - Looks the goods, 1x rising star nomination

So in 16 pick 2's that's 9 great players, 4 decent players, and 3 that haven't made the cut.
a combined 7x AA's, 7x Club B&F's, 7x Premierships, and 4 past or present club captains

Still seems like a pick we should have hung onto.

EDIT: Not complaining about giving up pick 2, but think some people in their attempt to justify trading it are starting to really undervalue how good of a pick it actually is. would not be shocked to see Davies-Uniacke/Dow/Rayner end up as a much better player than weller

No need to upgrade Spencer yet. Can play seniors off the rookie list next season with new rules.

Leaves a senior spot to secure another mature player not expected to last to the rookie draft.

We can upgrade Spencer next year when he isn’t eligible to stay on the rookie list anymore (if he is still delivering the goods).
