I would much rather spend up big in Fyfe in the hope that Freo didn't match his contract. As we could front load we could take the hit.

If freo match, I'd be happy to goto the draft and save our pennies for next year.

paying premium draft picks for a premium player doesn't really improve us

This is the point .
Heavily front load a contract for Fyfe to avoid a Freo match and bring him in for NOTHING trade wise .
Trade our 2018 1st rounder for a Hopper , that should land him at this early stage of his career as opposed to Shiel who would cost double that to trade for .
Trade Gibbs for Adelaide's 2017 1st rounder and take it and our own 1st rounder to the draft .
Then add B.Silvagni the next year for unders .
This nets us 5 x premium talent , 4 of which add to our mass grouping of youngster's going forward and a 26yo bona fide superstar .
From 2018 it's a seriously talented list , the age profile should see us challenging for a sustained period of time .

I wonder if contract negotiations have been raised in regards to CCurnow & McKay.

No surprise for Weitering having been done and then we had another year for Silvagni, but what about these two?
If they're up and running the senior side in the first half of the season, they'll get stuck into that at mid-year.

We don't do many (or possibly any) re-signings at this time of year under SOS' stewardship.

Agree but hard to see Freo not matching, so expect a forced trade for both.
Best case is a 1st and 2nd round pick for each.
However if we finish above Freo on the ladder, maybe they would take the FA compo and go into a full rebuild.
Agree with this. Fyfe will cost us too much I reckon. As good as he is, we really should be looking elsewhere.

Omeara is injury prone and not proven whilst Mitchell was Sydney's 3rd or 4th best midfielder. Not comparable in currency to Fyfe who is a brownlow medalist and Shiel who is arguably the best or 2nd best Giants midfielder.

If we get both Fyfe and Shiel I will personally drive you to and from every Carlton home game in 2018 in a navy blue hummer with pictures of shiel and fyfe on the bonnet.

oh we all need our dream and aspirations.

not claiming any inside word, its just that im confident that sos would be able to get it done.

though if sos did make it happen i would risk overloading my heart and supplying lines of the good stuff to make it a memorable trip for that first game they play together in the nay blue.

I'd rather we get them signed up sooner rather than later, I think Curnow and McKay should be the first priority. I don't want to see a Laverde type situation where the Saints or someone come in and offer some crazy coin.

Great post. Don't even negotiate with Freo, front load the contract to make it very difficult for them to match. It would be a massive call for a club to match a big offer for 5 years or whatever for a player that wants to leave, especially when they can walk away with a high draft pick.

everyone's forgetting that the AFL will probably change the F&S rules just before the B.Silvagni draft just to screw us over!!

TerryWallet's Sportsbook:

FYFE - Where Is He At?

75% Freo
20% Vic Club
5% Interstate Club

Let's now concentrate on the 20% Vic Club:

Geelong, Melb, W.Bulldogs prob not keen.

So that leaves 7 Clubs having a red hot crack at Fyfe. All with minimum $1M a year and umpteen sales pitch's to enter the race.

So 7 Clubs splitting a 20% chance at Fyfe.

That's us at a 3% chance at landing Fyfe.

I'M EXCITED.

Thank you for your time reading, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding my unquestionable figures.

The big threat could be Richmond. They'll be pushing for a flag for the 37th year in a row....

I see where you are coming from, although I would prefer sharing that money on two quality players rather than one. I agree with the bold passage

No club in the comp can offer Fyfe as much cash as we can

Where has all this talk of Hopper come from? I would imagine there is no way GWS would allow themselves to lose a top related academy player. If they allow an academy player to walk after two years they may as well give up on the future of the club. They would not let that happen without an almighty fight and I imagine would not do a trade under any circumstances.

Can someone please answer thy's question. Because I'd like to know too...

Does "Parrot" refer to a previous poster or the brilliantly coloured, hook-billed Psittaciformes ????

Raaaaaarggh....a former poster.......Raaaaarrrgh

His/Her banter pre-round 1 Richmond matches was legendary.

Hopper is out of contract at the end of next year - they will certainly trade if he decides he no longer wants to be there.

They wouldn't be so stupid as to let him walk for nothing.

If he doesn't stay at Fremantle, he is most certainly going to end up at a Victorian club.
Most likely out of us Hawthorn, North Melbourne and St. Kilda.

We have the upper hand given the expiring contracts of those half of our cap has been thrown towards.
But the other clubs have the upper hand when it comes to where they currently sit (even North Melbourne in a way look in better shape than us right now, but without the chance to get either a couple big names such as Fyfe, Martin or even dragging Heeney out of Sydney, their future is bleak).

Barass70 mentioned Hopper so it's worthy of discussion .
Like Marchbank this year and Treloar the year before , if the out of contract Hopper wants out of GWS the Giants have little option other than to make a deal .
The key is to persuade him to nominate Carlton , thus giving us a very strong hand in the negotiations .
